OMNOMNOMALY
I've noticed lately a lot of people are getting into modern music. Any modern rock fans? A few of my favourite bands include Metric, Arcade Fire, Mobile, Murder City Sparrows, The New Pornographers, Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse, Tegan and Sara, Billy Talent, etc. I like them because they all sound unique to me, and sometimes I just love the nonsensical lyrics =P Does anybody perhaps have any similar and maybe sort of underground bands they can recommend?
2010DigitalBoy
Yepper! Bad Acid Trip. This band is insane, they're kinda somewhere between Rob Zombie and Gwar. Their music is flippin trippy as it's got some screaming, but sometimmes the singer just talks in all kinds of weird voices and crap, and its not bad either. Their lyrics are somewhere along the lines of System of a Down but more weird. They've got one CD out and another on the way and they've been touring with Gwar and System of a Down on occasion. OMNOMNOMALY
*laughs* Sounds maybe a bit too hardcore for my taste. I love System, however I'm not so much of a fan of Gwar. Don't they have a song about roadkill? >_>
2010DigitalBoy
Every song by Gwar (they have like 10 CDs) Is about death and mutilation. Hold on let me get my cousin in here he's all about underground rock bands.
Lozer and Proud
As of right now, I listen to a lot of punk bands, which of course include My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Halifax, and I guess, The White Stripes. Although I do in fact listen to a wide variety of music which include bands and artists like Hellogoodbye and Gwen Stefani, the majority of my music is what people like to call "punk" or "emo." And although a lot of new bands are breaking out, probably (if you have yet to notice) one of my favorite ones has to be My Chemical Romance. I love their lyrics and just the entire sound of anything they do. So, yeah...I guess that' it.lol.

Revolut1on
Avenged Sevenfold is easily the best rock band out right now. I seriously recommend you pick up their City of Evil album. Every song on that album is awesome. It's the perfect example of what a rock album should sound like.

Since they switched record companies, they've been launched to a mainstream position. Personally, now they're a big contradiction. In one of their new song, they say don't support the "scene" but the fail to realize, that they are the scene, kinda shameful. I'm more into metalcore now like: All that remains, As I lay dying, Bleeding through, The agony scene, Symphony of peril, From a second story window, Senai beach, Terror, Waking the destroyer and etc. At times I still listen to "screamo-emo"...like senses fail, underoath, saosin, and (old) t.b.s

Funny, since I've heard of Fall Out Boy, I always thought they were a relatively new band. Bleh. I don't listen to screamo. I tried it, and I usually love the instrumentals, but I have to be able to sing to it, y'know? The Newfie
Avenged Sevenfold are, like most new music, a joke. The vocals are half-decent, and then they're digitally enhanced. The instrumentals are, again, half-decent and mostly digitally redone - I've heard them live and I laughed for a solid 10 minuets. It isn't even just the music of this so-called Rock that's out now. The emotion is gone. The passion, the Rock N' Roll just isn't there. Everything that Rock N' Roll was, should be, is gone. I cannot stand that these bands even call themselves Rock. 95% of these news 'Rock' bands sound absolutly terrible live, and the other 5% most likely weren't very good to begin with. I miss Rock N' Roll. Da' Newf Oowatanite

Goodbye, Face
Modern rock... Not a big favorite, but I do listen to it. Some of my favorites include AutoDefe, Christiansen, The Mars Volta, and Circa Survive. AutoDefe is a band I happened to pass by one day at PureVolume, they're really good, I haven't really checked on them in a while, though. They have a progressive feel to their music. Christiansen started out as an Emo band, but moved into a more Hippie Rock band, if that is actually a genre. They changed their name to Your Highness Electric, but haven't really done anything since. I shouldn't have to tell you about Mars Volta, lol. A very good prog-rock band with members of The Movielife. Features some Latin music influences. Circa Survive is a supergroup fronted by Anthony Green, the former vocalist of Saosin. It definitely has a prog-rock feel, but the band denies it. I love this band. Other than that, my tastes are just too weird to be called normal Modern Rock, lol. And A7X blows.
Amorphous
The band that I have seen listed in this thread I think should not be consider modern rock they just do not have the proper qualities as such to be a modern rock band. Most of the bands that I listen to that would be considered modern rock really had the height of their career in the mid and late 90?s and some of the bands listed just happened to release stuff in the 90?s that would be considered modern rock as well even though they have been around forever and a day. Nine Inch Nails Marilyn Manson Radiohead Smashing Pumpkins Tool David Bowie (Outside, Heathen) The Cure (Bloodflowers, self titled album) Godspeed! You Black Emperor A Silver Mt. Zion Shalabi Effect Queens of the Stone Age The Eagles of Death Metal Kyuss (Though can be considered metal due to it's intensity) And that's really all I can think of

Gen. Andronicus
If you are looking for something to liken to The Arcade Fire (the softer songs), may I suggest Sufjan Stevens (Seven Swans). If you want something truly bizarre, The Fiery Furnaces may be to your liking. However, if you have never heard them before, I recomend NOT listening to their newest release, Rehearsing My Chior. Not that it is a bad CD (not by any account) but it is a VERY difficult composition. Instead try Blueberry Boat, or even their b-sides album E.P.. But I still warn you, Blueberry Boat is also quite the challenge. If you want Radiohead, try Lake Trout. Apparently they released a new album this year, something to the extent of Not Them You. I still haven't gotten around to listening to it, but their last one Another One Lost was fantastic. A "classic" psuedo-underground modern rock band (I assume that's what you are looking for) is Sunny Day Real Estate. An interesting little fact is that when Dave Grohl started the Foo Fighters, he enlisted Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith of SDRE to play bass and drums respectively. However, don't be thinking FF or you may be dissappointed. SDRE's How It Feels to be Something On, is one of the CDs I own. Based upon your examples, I think that you should stay away from Avenged Sevenfold. At first, their extremely dark feel and unappologetic metal influence worked well with their extremely poppy production, giving off an stylish evil nature to their music. However, they seem to be going the way of Metallica with their new crap. I'm not very affected, their music didn't mean that much to me anyways. I don't know how you feel about country or bluegrass, but if you're willing to experiment with them, I know a few rewarding bands. If you want something dark and almost gothic, checkout 16 Horsepower or Woven Hand. David Eugene Edwards is the frontman of both "apocalyptic" rock/country bands, possibly similar to some Nick Cave. I also recomend the band Nickel Creek. Good stuff from these guys. Other "weird" bands you might enjoy: Dredg, mewithoutYOU, Cool Hand Luke, Muse, TV On the Radio, Death From Above 1979, Minus the Bear, Hope of the States,Coheed and Cambria, These Arms are Snakes. Ailes de Velour
A7X = Avenged Sevenfold Just so joo's know. If you end up liking prog. rock, I might suggest Placebo (especially the album Sleeping With Ghosts). They're never too hard, and particularly cheeringupish on a not so great day (though I usually just go to the cow on Rasputina's website for cheerings up). Other than that, I can't really think of any other modern rock bands like you've described, and haven't been mentioned on here. I don't listen to too much of that, I mostly listen to 80s, 90s, obscure stuff, metal, folk, emo, whatever whatever. =D. Good luck on your noble quest. (as i type this, i'm listening to DCFC's newest, "Plans". That album is beautiful. So f'ing beautiful.) and, about the Mars Volta, i saw someone say there were ex-members of the movielife. If there are, this is news to me. I think you may have confused the movielife with At The Dirve-In. Cedric and Omar (singer and lead guitar, respectively) are ex-members of this band, and they started TMV. I'm pretty sure that the movielife disentegrated into Nightmare of You (awesome band, i suggest you listen) and I am The Avalanche (not as good as NOY, but they're decent.) anyway, some bands i suggest: Bloc Party (mellow indie rock), Tourmaline (dancey synth pop), SayAnything (probably the best emo/punk hybrid band in the world right now), The Blood Brothers (progressive hardcore, amazingly talented guys. pick up a copy of "Crimes". Music lovers will not be dissapointed.) There's a slew of others i could list, but i think i've made myself sound like an a-hole music snob enough already. sorry if i sound like a pretentious jerk with this post..i didn't mean to.... As for Avenged Sevenfold...the music sounds so processed its ridiculous. I like music that's sorta rough around the edges. Take all the members of Cream. Eric Clapton has that impeccable guitar tone and Ginger Baker has spot on time, but when the two and the bass player (whose name escapes me), it sounds rough. I know Mars Volta doesn't really fit in this "rough-sound" category, but since the music is so free flowing and spaz-tastic, it makes up for it. Anything by Modest Mouse prior to Good News For People Who Love Bad News, I like.
Gen. Andronicus
I don't understand why people don't like 'Good News For People Who Like Bad News'. Though it's not amazing, it's a really solid album from Modest Mouse. In other accounts, I really must say that 'Frances the Mute' Was probably my the crappiest release that I purchased this year. If you like it, that's great, but The Mars Volta have failed (again) to convince me of their greatness. There are some good parts, but that's all the cd is, a bunch of good parts in the midst of nothing. Sure they're all talented musicians but they don't know how to compose a cd that holds my interest. BOO.
