Pride & Prejudice

Just came back from seeing the new Pride & Prejudice movie. It was amazing. I know everyone loves the mini-series, but I actually thought this was much better--even the male lead was as good as (if not superior to) Colin Firth. And Keira Knightley was just riveting.

Strong cinematography, great music, classic dialogue... I was thoroughly impressed, and my attention almost never wandered (which is rare for me, when it comes to lengthy movies). I was surprised and gratified by how intact they kept the plot. So if you haven't watched this, I urge you to do so. And if you have, what did you think of it?
Wow that's odd I wasn't aware they were making a movie, I'll have to see that. So was it basically the mini series but a lot longer?
Well, the mini-series is 12 hours long (or something like that), so actually the movie (which clocks in at two hours or so, if I remember correctly) is much shorter. The most obvious difference, aside from the fact that the film's script is much tighter and the characters are played by different people, is in the production values. The movie just looks more... uh, cinematic. :animeswea

I saw it and it was okay, but at the time I was doing Wuthering Heights at school and reviewing the movie for that, so I guess I must have been in a critical mood. Some of the scenes I liked, definately. But the fact that they focus on the cinematography so much annoyed me;
twenty seconds of looking at Kiera Knightley's face through a lamp [was it a lamp? I'm sure it was.] kind of annoyed me.
But I liked the characters, and ooh! ---

We're taking this break for me to SQUEE like a fangirl over the cuteness of Mr. Bingley! He was just so awkward and lovable I wanted to take him home with me!

--

ahem. It took a while for me to get used to Kiera Knightley as Lizzie, although once I had it was fine. As for the Darcy, he was yummy but I still imagined Firth playing the role -- even though I only vaguely remember seeing him in the BBC version. I guess I've just grown up with Firth as Darcy, and that's been reinforced through the Bridget Jones movies, as well.

The was only one thing that I found hilariously stupid,
and that I consider an error in cinamatography -- between when Lizzie and aunt and uncle are heading to Darcy's seat in the country, and when they are there, there is a completely random image of deer running through the forest. It just cracked me up.
It was such an odd thing to see, haha.

But otherwise, yeah, I really liked it. I thought it was a good movie -- one I'd see again, definitely, although I think I'll wait until it comes out at the video stores rather than paying another $10 for it.

Hm, I don't know if I'll be able to go and see this in the theater, but I'll probably give it a watch sometime (as in a year later than everyone else lol). I liked the mini-series (I was practically the only guy in my AP English Lit class who did...), so hearing that this is of similar quality is good. :)

I saw this movie last night. I love the miniseries, so I wasn't sure how much I was going to like the movie, especially because I had a hard time picturing Kiera as Lizzie. I have to say, besides the costuming inaccuracies and the patty-cake dancing, I really enjoyed this movie. I thought that they did a good job of choosing their scenes, since they had a limited amount of time.

I really liked Matthew MacFadyen's interpretation of Mr. Darcy.
I liked how it seemed that Darcy had more interest in Lizzie in this movie, but his social ineptitude gave him problems.
I thought that the way the scenes were written helped show this, too.
Like how he asks at the one ball about how to show interest or liking so it doesn't come on too strong (instead of poetry) and she says to dance and then at the next ball he asks her to dance.
I absolutely *loved* Mr. Bingley, too. I felt he was great and, as Lady Asphyxia said he was just so awkward and lovable I wanted to take him home with me!

Well, almost a year later. :p

Anyway, huge bump, but I watched the film just now, and I have to agree with Dagger that it is quite the awesome and I'm impressed with how good it is. Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen compare very favorably with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, in my opinion. I fell head over heels for Elizabeth as much as everyone in here seems to have for Mr. Bingley, haha. And I doubt that I'll ever tire of Darcy grousing around with that indifferent look on his face and acting generally awkward towards everyone.

I'm also glad that the story was not changed too much in this adaptation. There's more of a focus on
the Elizabeth/Darcy and Jane/Bingley relationships
, but it works well and the film keeps much of the story's wit intact, especially in regards to Elizabeth's interactions with everyone.

Furthermore, the film is freakin' gorgeous. Many of the outside scenes are just so damn beautiful, and I enjoyed the shot that Lady A. mentioned, among other similar types of shots (
such as the sun shining behind Elizabeth and Darcy when Elizabeth accepts Darcy's proposal - it's not exactly subtle, but hell if it doesn't enhance the scene
).

Definitely see this if you haven't already. :)

At camp I had signed up for the Pride and Prejudice evening activity thinking it would be the movie, but we ended up watching the BBS series, which ended up leaving and playing cards in the back room. So when I got back home I immediately rented the movie and I obsessed over it. I watched this movie recently and I loved. I watched it twice, which might sound odd to a lot of people, but I rarely watch movies twice.

I usually dislike most romance movies I see, mostly because it's usually a "fall in love a first sight" thing and I hate that stuff. But everything in this movie was so wonderfully subtle that it was sexy. Some of the scenes were so expansive and beautiful to look at and I loved how quiet everything was.

Keira Knightley was hot, Matthew MacFadyen was hot, and the movie was sexier than Mr. and Mrs. Smith could ever be. Why haven't I bought this movie yet?

Since my sisters have an English essay to do on both the new movie and the TV series, I have now been well versed in both versions. They both have good and bad aspects to both of them. The movie has been 'sexed' up for the cinemas. I do like the new version because I can relate to it,a nd because it has been 'sexed' up.

But I can also appreciate the TV series, although my sisters really don't like it. It has a more realistic, non-Hollywood approach to the story.

Not much, but there's my two-cents.

I loved this movie too! I didn't like the mini series much, I thought it was too long and drawn out. The movie was also slow in parts but the rest made up for it. Its so romantic and ahhhh....i love it! My favorite part is when he comes to her in the rain and he says "I..I..I love you". SO cute. The acting is fantastic as well. I was pretty anti at first because I thought nobody could do Mr. Darcy like Colin Firth, but whats his face did a pretty decent job. hehe. What was everyone else's favorite part?

I just recently saw the movie and I absolutely loved it. In fact, I loved it so much that I watched it a second time the very next day. This is kinda odd for me because I'm not really a fan of romance movies but this one was definitely an exception.

There are tons of them. I've not seen all of them, myself (I haven't seen a lot of them, actually lol), but here are some of the ones that are held in fairly high regard...

Pride and Prejudice (year and major stars)
1995, Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle: The mini-series. Great watch if you have a decent chunk of free time on your hands. I never have the time to watch this anymore lol.
1940, Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson: Haven't seen it, but it's got a solid score on IMDb (7.6, which normally means that it's a pretty damn good film).

Sense and Sensibility
1995, Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant: Haven't seen it, though I'm planning to when I get the time.

Emma
1996, Kate Beckinsale: Once again, haven't seen it, but it has mostly positive reviews.

Persuasion
1995, Amanda Root and Ciarán Hinds: You know the drill, haha. Again, good reviews, probably worth watching.

Those are the major ones from what I can tell. Of course, that's not even counting the adaptations that go in different directions, such as Mansfield Park (1999) and Clueless (loosely adapted from Emma).

Hope that helped you out! :)
