Terminology question

l33t is a supposedly 'Netspeak' word derived from the word 'Elite'. The 3s are pronounced as Es. Basically, some people think that putting numbers in words makes them seem like a cool-dude hacker. l33t and other l33sp34k ('leetspeak') words are used extensively on online gaming servers (Counterstrike, etc.).

Other words include 'h4XX0r' (= haxxor = hacker) and 'n00b' (= noob = newbie = new person). You'll probably see 'n00b' used here a lot, we use it to mean someone who's new to the boards and has terrible post quality.

A note: if this thread turns into a see-who-can-speak-the-noobishest-l33tspeak competition, the Mod-Rod will have to make an appearance. :modrod:

I know, I'm not much for "new slang" or "net talk". I just spell everything out the "proper" way.

But, there's this whole thing, where the words are replaced with numbers. And I've seen people just talk that way, looks kinda weird...

Interesting, most interesting.

As Raiyuu was saying "leetspeak" is usually just some jackasses way of trying to sound in-the-know Net-wise and ending up looking like a complete tool because they can't be bothered to spell properly. Thankfully we have only a few n00bs about the site who dedicate themselves to replying entirely in such a manner. Generally those who use leetspeak are the same kind of people who us "Txt" spelling in a mobile phone message.
1 g075 73l-l n3kk1d 1337 5k1ll5. There, I said it. And there's not a thing anyone can do about it. >_>
Aside from Raiyuu or any of the other Moderators just editing your post and removing it.

Living in an IT (read: computer geek) heavy dorm last year changed my perspective a bit on 1337speak. I didn't think there was anyone who actually still amused themselves by writing like that (as opposed to those who amuse themselves by parody; the distinction is small but important). I was wrong, heh.

I would also like to point out that using 1337speak terms in casual conversation is about the funniest thing ever.

it is the awful truth, we live in this IT era of time, people make up these "ridiculous" ways of typing to sound "badassy"...

oh and one time this guy at school was giving out a speech, he made a joke and actually said "LOL" in the end......i yelled from the crowd..."FREAK!" hehe :animeswea

Yeah, I know. My friend says "lol" all the time. It's seriously annoying.

I thought it all started out to be all lazy like, just to shorten every word and line. But now, it's like you said "ridiculous". Dateline covered this once, I think the segement was called "kids and their codes". It was really interesting to watch, how many kids knew all that" l337" talk.

I would of yelled "freak" as well, no I'm joking. But seriously. ;)

Seriously though, all leetspeak does is annoy me, it is so annoying to try and figure out what these people are saying that I give up almost immediately. I figure if it was that friggin important, the least they could do is grammarize it.

It seriously takes more typing and such to "l337 up" all those words, so it's useless as a shorthand, people use it to show how 'net-worldy' and 'cool' the are, but are only shown up to be inchoherent psycho babblers.

I like 'leet speak', but not on forums. Trying to have a decent conversation with someone on the boards who insists talking in this manner, that I can't stand.

Also, the people who use the capitalize/lower case letters to every other word. Example: SaIyAnPrInEsSx

Gah, I hate that. But that is for another discussion.

Using leet during IMs is alright with me, unless the person is using it for every word. I don't have the time to decipher everything. @_@

I once went through a period of saying btw rather than 'by the way' in regular speach. Its was purely accidental and rather embarassing to say the least. I think that typing in such a manner throughout a post just makes it look messy and incoherant.

why yall gotta be -471/\/ on t3h 13375|>34< ?

XD I don't see anything wrong with it. Also, j00 should know that there are MANY variations of l337 speak. Some people don't use numbers so much as they do lines.

or

You know I am glad I never learned this crazy looking language and I'm a comp major. Oh yes Tical I remeber all those incoherent PMs. Maybe I should be glad I couldn't read them.

Anyway when I did text message on my phone-I wrote the words out. It took longer but who has the time to read l337!?! I think it needs to go away!!

We are -471/\/ on t3h 1337 5|>34<, or 'hatin' on the leet speak', as you so eloquently put it because I had to spend about five minutes translating what you just said. To me that doesn't ever get fun, in fact, its just plain annoying and messy.

If I start speaking it, someone beat me with a dictionary until I stop. Please.
