King Kong Remake

Okay, so who's going to see this?

*raises hand*

It's been a very, very long time since I watched the original film. I can't claim that I remember it too well, although I'm pretty familiar with the story itself. Anyway, things are looking good for Peter Jackson's remake. It's currently got a rating of 94% over at Rotten Tomatoes. The trailers have been fantastic. I was eager to see the new movie before, but all the positive buzz has definitely been encouraging.

I'm definately going to go see this movie, I'm lookign forward to seeing what Peter Jackson will bring to the Kong franchise.

I'm happy that PJ is taking the setting back to depression era 1930's NY instead of doing another remake that updates everything. Kong belongs in the 1930's.

I saw a little bit of someone playing the XBox 360 game at WalMart... Im confused as to what exactly this movie is about. Why is there a TRex? What exactly is the story here, anyway? Is King Kong a protagonist or antagonist? Well, it is Peter Jackson directing so it can't be all bad. I might see it, though Im not a big theater goer.

Also, is it just me or are all of Peter Jackson's movies remakes?

I think it's just you, Tical ^.^

Peter Jacksons movies consist of Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners, and Forgotten Silver, to name a few that weren't remakes. And if you want to get pedantic about it, neither was the Lord of the Rings trilogy, sicnde that was based on a book rather than a set of older movies.

And the T-Rex thing? Well that all takes place on Skull Island, Kong's home, that T-Rex is a co-inhabitor that, obviosuly, doesn't get along too well with Kong.

Kong is definately a protagonist although his actions do tend to castigate him as a villain,
Kong scaling the empier state building, swattign down planes and taking away Ann Darrow are all something we wouldn't consider of a 'typical protagonist'.
yet in the end, in the 1933 film and I guarantee you in this one too, We are made to empathise with Kong through the film, with his,
capture and display in NY, his confusuion and anger in the world of these bizarre humans, love of Anne, who is the only human to actually 'get Kong.' I mean, it is through his love of Anne that we get to see Kong's sensitive, caring, loving side, we see he is not some mere monster out of destruction and chaos, he lives and loves like us.
In light of that, if anything, I would say that the real antagonists of the Kong saga are humans.

No. His earlier films were cheesy horror movies. They are great though, and I would suggest that you check them out. They are Bad Taste, Dead Alive, and another that really isn't horror, Meet The Feebles.

One thing I don't get about the Kong remake is it's length. Did this REALLY need to be over three hours long??

Saw the movie today, and it was great!

I didn't particularly enjoy the beginning, but the rest of the movie was superb. I haven't been to a movie in ages where I left with a lump in my throat, and I can't recall one that persisted this long!
Jackson's portrayal of Kong's death, noticeably, when the eyes faded, was deeply saddening.
I'd also like to commend Jack Black's performance, I was expecting him to do some of his more typical antics in this movie, but by the end, I didn't even have my expectant smirk. it was great to see him in a serious role, and one in which he did well.

Kong was 3 hours, but it certainly didn't feel like that. The movie was engaging right througout.

As Shinji asked, what films of Jackson's would be remakes anyway? The Lord of the Rings films were adapted from books, not those weird animated films. I don't really see the correlation here lol. I just wanted to revoice that.

In any case, the film looks interesting to me. No one I know seems to want to see it, though, so who knows when I'll get around to it. I've read mostly good reviews, at least... the ones that were a bit more negative seemed to be from people I never agree with to begin with (i.e., IGN).

Just saw it tonight. Jesus, does this man know how to make movies. The whole thing is incredibly overblown and over-the-top, but not to the point of being nauseating. Hey, why have
one Tyrannosaurus Rex
when you can have, like, five? That scene was just sick, and I mean that in the best way possible.

This is the first time in a while that I've heard an audience react audibly again and again--laughter, gasps, cheering, the works. It's amazing how realistic Kong & the other creatures looked... it would not be wholly remiss of me to say that the remake may have the best special effects of any movie I've seen. A little on the long side, but it's a great popcorn flick. Go see it.

I'll post more when I'm feeling more coherent; 3+ hours of King Kong followed almost immediately by half an hour of Fullmetal Alchemist would be enough to do anyone in.

I was skeptical about this movie, but went anyhow because my friend wanted to see it and I wanted out of the house. I have to say, its was amazing.

The CG was incredible. It was so realistic. Normally you'll see flaws here and there where you can just teel it was computer generated, but with this I was surprised to see it was hard to tell.
I loved the parts where Anne Darrow was in the jungle and she comes accross the dinosaurs. The irony of getting away from one man eater and getting in the path of another. I had some good laughing.
I agree with Shinji on Jack Black's performance. I was blown away, he did such an excellent job in this role, I was quite surprised.

The worst part of the movie for me was the
bugs
. *quivers*

This is definetely a must see. You'll laugh, you'll smile, you'll cry, you'll be grossed out. Great fun. ^_^

I realize that this is the type of film you have to see in the theatre, and it really does look like an interesting film but I doubt I?ll be wasting money on it anytime soon.
No. His earlier films were cheesy horror movies.
Not me, and I agree Dooby.

Given that it is failing in the box office (not sure if those statistics on Rotten mean anything to me, mine inform me that it failed to take in 10 million as was expected in the box office*, a large blow to the movie and Peter Jackson), I hope that I?ll be able to see it soon on Netflix or through a friend. As it stands I dislike most of Rotten Tomatoes reviews and ratings, and having poor dealings with the staff in the past I very rarely trust their rating system or their judgment (I find a lot of their very ?rotten tomatoes? to be exceptional movies, for instance).

As for the actual film itself I can?t stand the casting choices and something about 3 hours of graphical fluff turns me off - played the video game, thought it was impressive visually, looks like short but sweet fun. Jack Black annoys me, the expectation of Peter Jackson releasing yet another epic style movie is a little too? well expected, and I dislike that the movie is around 3 hours along (having studied film making in the past, do you realize how much of the movie they must have had to cut away if the end result is 3 hours? Scary). So I certainly do expect to see a hell of a lot of ?stunning visuals,? and... that?s about it, nothing that will make this movie stand the test of time (but not much is shocking with that, modern film releases very rarely do stand the test of time).

With all of the flops recently, I?m actually in the mood to go see a good film? so I?ll be waiting till something interesting comes out (the new M. Night Shama? whatever looks really good, despite not liking Signs or Village too much, that new film is next on my list).

Some people have already given this movie praise on OB, ~Smiles~ I suppose I wouldn't be kicking and screaming if someone asked me to go with them, but I certainly don't have it planned at the moment and would rather see it upon its VHS/DVD release.

EDIT: Eh, only thing in the theatre to see so people in my house want to see it. My schedule is cleared... looks like I'll be be going later if all goes well. I'll be back here after I see it. =^.^=

Regarding the box office results... I read that the weekend domestic take was somewhere in the realm of ~$50 million. Not stellar, but not flop-worthy, either. Here's an interesting article that touches on future expectations and so forth.

Well, I saw this movie yesterday with my ladyfriend. This movie was spectacular.

You know a movie is good when at the end everyone stands up and claps. It was mind-blowing with chilling scenes sure to make you pee your pants. On the other hand, you had scenes where people were weeping and whiping their tears.

One scene I loved was when
Kong was battling the three dinosaurs. I thought how Ann discovered there was a second dinosaur was hillarious
. When people saw
the third T-Rex enter
everyone's eyes gleamed with excitement and anticipation.
The bug scene was very disturbing.
But it was amazing! I looked around and there were people covering there eyes and just getting really into the movie. It was grand.

All in all I would deffinately give this movie 10 stars out of 10.

Just saw it today. I have to say I'm pretty dazed from it still, damn that was a long movie. Apparently it's extremely similar to the original, including Kong's mannerisms and Anne's image. I really needed to pee halfway through, but I couldn't bring myself to get up and go! The dinasoar animation was excellent (both of them ;3) and the detail on Kong like the teeth and fur was just flawless.

Very funny how the film could almost be a trilogy in itself, the voyage, the island and the city. I could analyse it further, but my head grows weary and dinner's ready.

~Dagger~
Strange, a number of people I know caught News Channel 4 mentioning how it didn't take in even 10 and ranked as one of the lowest movies out, generating much far less than expected (a big blow to Jackson as I mentioned earlier). Today there were some poor reviews in the local Newspaper as well. Odd how the sources mentioned can come at results which are complete opposites (the source you posted).

My original concerns were that it was going to become another cross between a Godzilla remake and The Day After Tomorrow (which despite some die hard fan followings, happens in my book to be an exceptionally bad movie).

Still planning on seeing King Kong later though, from the positive feedback on the OB I'm actually becoming rather excited about it. :)

EDIT: Seems like I'm not going today after all, important things have came up. Heh, oh well, I'll go to see it sometime soon.

That's probably a reference to the Wednesday take, which was [strike]around[/strike] <$10 million. I can see why that would lead to confusion.

I thought a Wednesday opening was a surprising choice for this movie, since it doesn't have the hardcore fanbase of something like LotR, but I guess they were hoping to start the word-of-mouth process as early as possible.

EDIT: Meant to say under $10 there, sorry. It was actually around $9.8, I think.

~Dagger~
Seems like it was for Wed, indeed.

I saw it tonight with forum member Tigris after dinner at the mall. Pretty good, in fact, very good - I think we both enjoyed it immensely. I didn't find it superb in any way shape or form though, while it was very entertaining we both felt there were some major parts that needed work.

I have to admit that I thought Jack Black was terrible and that isn't because I normally think he's pretty bad in the movies he's in, truth be told there are some movies I like him in but I didn't like him at all. Up against good performances by Mr. Broody and the like, I don't think he really held a candle, if anything served to take away from the movie.

The only other thing I didn't like about the movie was that the
love scenes seemed a bit foolish.
Tigris didn't share my opinion on this one, at least I don't think (maybe she can answer later), but to me while it was excusable in the original King Kong, it sure as hell wasn't excusable in the remake (
I thought the fact that he spared her out of all the other people sacrificed was strange,
but even more
I simply didn't think her part of loving him and being as obsessed over him for saving her hide was nearly as convincing as it could have and should have been). The emotional aspects simply weren't that emotional for me, but there were scenes that touched me, by and large though the
emotional ending
didn't touch me, it didn't even touch me in the original. Was hoping it would.

Beside from that, I thought the visuals were pretty good - the only time I didn't completely enjoy them is with the dinosaurs, thought up close they seemed to appear quite "foggy" the way animated CG tends to be. But all in all the visuals get an A+ as they contributed to the entertainment value of the movie, if not a more ?stunning? quality which would lead one to mark this film?s graphics as superb. Visuals were LoTR style if not a little better on Kong, but the cinematography was pure magic: scenes fit the movie, and looked really pretty.

I thought the soundtrack was great and the acting for the most part was decent-to-good.

Certainly a film worth seeing and no, you cannot possibly enjoy it the same at home - I'm glad I went to the movies to see it? it needs to be seen on a large screen to be fully enjoyed. So would I recommend the movie to someone? Certainly, go see it in the theatre for some entertainment: again, good movie, but nothing superb. Tigris says, "Yeah" when I ask her if it was worth buying, I disagree and say better once in the theatre, though that'll depend on one's preference.

Amazing, absolutely amazing. I just got back from the theater, and the worst thing about the whole darn movie was that my popcorn was burnt. And the bugs. Oh God, the bugs...My boyfriend probably has a scar on his hand where my ring was digging into his flesh.

But Kong, he looked so real! It was the best CG ever, which is a given, considering that this was the best movie I have ever seen. Ever. It even has a pug!!! I almost squealed when the guy holding him was on screen for those two seconds. Cutest darn dogs ever. It's a colossal movie of "best ever's".

I agree, mostly. Jack Black did a great job of stepping into a serious role, but I found his ending line
"It seems that the beauty has killed the beast."
or whatever he said to be really really really REALLY lame. I actually laughed. I was sad about Kong, but I couldn't help but laugh.

Again, as sad as it was (and I may get blasted for this)
as Kong fell, I got really misty-eyed. I was very nearly crying. And then it shows her on the roof, and Adrian Brody just climbs up the ladder! After everything is done, he finally gets there. It took him so long because of the stupid elevator, and I thought about him just standing in the elevator, waiting, and I laughed. Quietly, mind you, so as to not ruin the movie for other people, but it was actually so hilarious how long it took him, and then he finally just pops up after everything is gone and done.
Anyway, after all is said and done, I really liked it. I thought Peter Jackson did a great job. I'd have to agree, everything was over the top, but in such a way that you can say that it really was a good movie, and he just made the best of all the resources available to him, CG wise.

I thought this film was REALLY good...Even though it was rather long and seems to go on forever..it was still a good wastch..i found it funny though..that after all the times Kong saved Anne..she put up a pitiful excuse of a struggle when they were trying to take her back to the ship and snatch Kong to take him home...I shouted at the screen for her to get her act on...selfish bugger!...*sigh*..

Dispite this though i have to say that it was a spectacular show and the special effects on the island were amazing..(oh the bugs...oh gosh i was creeped out..)..I can even say that i cried when Kong was shot and then later died...I expected more of a mess when he fell though...did the photographers not think of the people the poor overly sized deceased ape landed on though?...honestly..!...

As for Jack Black's last line.."It seems it was beauty that killed the beast"..i pratically screamed..."NO IT WAS YOU..ITS YOUR FAULT!!!"..needless to say i was rather emotional by this point :animeblus

Quoted for truth. XD I was feeling so sad near the end and when he said that, I'm like, "wait. What?" XD I really did like him in this movie. I thought he did a really nice job and his facial expressions were great.

I saw the film yesterday and I was absolutely blown away. I really wasn't bothered by the length either, as I was too emersed in what was happening to care how sore I was getting. Like everyone has mentioned, the cg was fantastic and my friend and I were clinging to each other during the bug scene. This was a great film and I'd really like to see it again in theatres.

I'm a bit concerned with how it will do with home release. I don't think it will be so great on a smaller screen. That movie was epic. A big movie needs a big screen. I dunno...guess I'll find out when it comes to dvd.

I only have one real comment after seeing the movie: Peter Jackson is not allowed to direct movies involving bugs. Just... no.

Special effects were the best part about an overall predictable movie (Which was expected, since it's a remake). It was enjoyable. I felt that Kong took to long to fall of the empire statebuilding though, but it was still pretty interesting.

Me, I was a fan of this movie up until
the jungle scenes.
The director should've and could've cut out a great deal from that time slot. I think the NYC beginning was absolutely genius - I loved it.

I didn't really have any sympathy for Kong. In fact, thoughout the entire movie, I just wish he would die. I also didn't like it when
the author guy ran back after the girl, even when everyone else wanted to leave her for dead, and when he got to her, she wanted to stay with Kong. I would've pimp-smacked that girl and knocked some sense into her.
Once they were all back in NYC,
I wanted Kong to be gunned down off that skyscraper. I'm sorry, but I didn't really feel the whole empathy thing. He was an annoying, rampaging ape.

And why was he in one piece after falling off the Empire State's building? There wasn't even any blood!
That's just the brutal side of me talking, I suppose.
