Financial Aid

Ok, i'm applying to colleges right now. And i'm not exactly sure what financial aid is or if it's something i should look at or not. I'm pretty poor, my parents won't be able to pay for my college education, so i'm going to have to come up with the money on my own through scholarships, etc.

So what is financial aid? Is it a loan? Or something different?

Financial aid comes in many different forms--grants, scholarships, loans.

Definitely look into it.

Many things are need-based (how much money your parents make), many are merit-based (good grades, etc.), and others are field-based (many scholarships are specific to majors--"This is for high school seniors intended to major in physical therapy" or something like that.)

Talk to your school counselor, look around, apply for whatever you can.

Thanx for the quick reply, i really appreciate it.

It's funny. I went to a college message board and posed this question first. It's been over a day and no reply. I post it here on otaku, a generally anime message board, and i get a reply in a matter of minutes. Gotta love this message board.

Lore's right. You should talk to your counsellor first about looking into financial aid options. They're quite helpful.

I'm assuming you're living in the United States with this one,but probably the first thing that they're going to have you do is fill out a FAFSA application. ( The FAFSA website ) FAFSAs are what let you actually receive federal financial aid such as PELL grants and other things. Seeing as they are now only accepted electronically, you'll also have to get a PIN from the US Dept. of Education at the PIN website. Don't worry, as all this is also explained at the FAFSA website and links are given there as well.

Good luck with everything. ^^

You can kiss any financial aid goodbye if your parents have any assets that total over $100,000. My family is relatively poor aswell, but a few years ago my aunt made my mother her power of atterny (sp?). We now 'own' a property somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin, and by doing so totally screwed me over on any chance of financial aid.

Poor baby. My parents never planned on helping me with college. Free rides help no one.
Do what most of the 'poor' college students out there do.
Get a job and pay for it yourself.

Do you have any idea how long that could take? Working at McDonald's for a few years doesn't really sound too great.
Because most jobs that pay well require at least SOME college, I don't think that college should be so god damned expensive.

Incidently, once you're in college, look for jobs on campus. I don't know about other places, but there are a TON of jobs here that are only available to students. Wages vary a lot, but the current starting rate at the cafeteria is $8.25 an hour. Pretty ridiculous, actually. :p

Plus, they take college schedules as a given, and are super-lenient around finals week and such.

It doesn't really matter what you think, because they will still charge ridiculous amounts of money that people will be willing to pay to get the jobs that pay well.
Enjoy your life while you can. Because you start a brand new one when you hit college.
And it certainly isn't easier.

dude, if you need financial aid, you can always play the minority card, if you are at least 1/4 anything besides caucasian, you can basically get everything paid for you, trust me....i know :D

I'm living that life right now. No financial aid, no money from my parents. It helps that I'm at home for a year but I pay for my tution myself. This is apparently a 'free' course but I've paid about 500 pounds so far which is nearly double in dollars. And that's the 'free' course... next year I will be in a full-fledged course where I will need support. I know it's different in the UK but the concept is the same worldwide. I suppose if you have anything such as dyslexia or any other physical condition or learning disability, you will get some support money for it (at least I'm going to get money for having chronic asthma).

On another note, I find Corey's post rather insensitive considering Attimus only asked a question without adding hyperboles to seek attention. Yes, we all get by, but it can be daunting when you're just about to go into these sort of situations.

Well if you have a disability you could seek out the Department of Vocational Rehabilitations. They are a branch of the US Government and they help people with disabilities get jobs or help them go to school. They paid for my tuition and my fafsa paid for my books and dorm. You have to keep a B average though. And you have to go through lots of psych testing. They also consider depression a disability(that's me) if it's severe enough. This may not fit in your situation though. Good luck and file that fafsa as soon as possible-the money runs out quick!!

Would you rather have had someone tell you flat out what to expect instead of going into it with your hopes soaring unrealistically high?
I found out the hard way, and I wish I would have had someone to do exactly what I posted.
And every statement I ever make is meant to be taken literally, unless otherwise specified.
