Hey I know how theres a big deal of sexism of girls in anime with big breasts and stuff, but guys get it much worse.

They make japanese men seen like either sissy pansies afraid to talk to weomen (ex. that guy from love hina or the guy from ah my goddess), or they make them look like arrogant pricks (ex. that other guy from love hina and that guy from ah my goddesses friends).

What do you think?

A lot of anime are aimed at male nerds, so I guess that they're trying to use a character that the submissive rejects at the bottom of the social ladder can relate too?

And male arrogant prick from Love Hina? That can't be Seta, because he's not an arrogant prick...

And the female thing isn't sexism, its just trying to make the female characters look more attractive. Its no more sexist than using a cool-looking muscular guy as the main character.

LOL.
Begging your pardon, but most guys ARE either arrogant pricks or sissy pansies afraid to talk to women. (Or gay. You didn't mention that option.)

I thought everyone knew that.
Low Blow. Well, atleast you said most guys.

Anyways.... I don't really find this to be much of a big deal. The big breast, women dressing the way they do, sissy / arrogant boys..... none of it really matters to me. Really.. it's all old news to me. I see it everyday. (Perhaps the older you get, less things phase you.)

From what I've read of Japanese society, the stereotypical Japanese man IS shy towards women, whereas American men, especially good-looking ones, are usually not.

In fact, in one of the articles on Outpost Nine (which is a fantastic website, by the way), the author mentions a Japanese co-worker who was too shy to approach two attractive women, stating that foreign men wouldn't understand what he was going through.

Besides, those two stereotypes are far more prevalent in comedy shoujo than any other genre. I'd say that the "loud and obnoxious" and the "cold and cool" personalities are more frequently used in anime.

Yeah, but because this time in life is getting rather perverted as well, with sexual statements found funny and in almost every joke, it's only natural that anime, no, not just anime, but shows and movies would keep up with the times as well.

That was directed towards the comment of anime is getting perverted lately. :)

Otherwise, the whole "sexism" thing, I think it's a common interest within all the animes. Since each has it's own story, there's always the bishonen that was either once a nerd/geek/loser turned into absolute hottie with a body and personality to boot, or the cocky, way-too-good-for-anyone excluding that main character that's a girl. And in almost every anime, there's at least one perverted character, or one character that adds in the comical relief, that may have some sexual inuendos in them

All in all, anime is more or less portraying it's own view of our world in certain perspectives. And maybe the first few animes that was ever released, the creators thought of men and women like that.

I don't think it's sexism, it's characterization. o_O;; if a novellist wants their male characters to be pansies, then they are allowed to do so. And if several different novellists wants all their male characters to be pansies as well, that's fine. Just because a many characters act similar doesn't mean that the person responsible for him is saying that all men are the same way. You shouldn't get offended over a cartoon, after all...unless they were seriously bashing what you believe in or something. And even then, you can just turn it off. The only problem I have with some anime is really the perversion (I'm thinking of Chobits, here, mainly). Of course, perhaps the real pervert is the reader! People can draw negative connotations from the most innocent things.
Whats perverted about chobits?
Well, I think the perversion is emphasized more in the anime moreso than the original storyline of the manga. Hideki, the main character, would constantly have random porn books in his apartment that Chii would just HAPPEN to find.

Go figure. And there is the whole reset button that Chii has and whatnot. Plus the part where Chii was about to, basically be, one of those online figures.

When it comes down to the hard core story, Chobits isn't really intended to be a perverted anime, but it is the things surrounding the storyline, the fluff, that makes it seems perverted no less.

And my older cousin was going to have my younger seven year old cousin watch Chobits. As if I'd ever let her see it at such an age.

But yeah, Hideki is the perfect example of what may be "sexism", but simply portrayed as the typical perverted guy.

Those things dont seem too bad to me most of them were either tounge in cheek humor average male habits or just dumb fun. But I would not let a seven year old watch a 13+ anime. You really think that kid would understand what the hell is going on?

That is exactly what I thought and said. But she watched the first episode and got obsessive over the fact that Chii kept saying "chii" over and over again, thusly presuming that she was allowed to watch such an anime.

Not only would it be a bad influence that she wouldn't understand, but I seriously wouldn't want to go through the process of her asking me questions "what is this" and "what is that" on certain things that are mentioned. :animestun

But I've come to the conclusion that in many serious animes, there seems to be a perverted person that is the comical relief. I guess that's just how the wheels go to keep people laughing.

Male sexism in anime? Odd, most just notice the female sexism, me included. I never really thought to look at it the other way. But now that you mention it, most animes do include either nerdy pervs (Love Hina's Keitaro, for example) or cocky bad a** (like Samurai Champloo's Mugen). But I really don't think they do this to be steryotypical; I think they do it because, well, we love them for it.

Take for example, the nerdy perv type. Sticking a man that has had next to no interaction with women (Keitaro) in situations where he will be in forced contact with women on a daily basis (becoming landlord of a girl's dorm) will have many, how should I put this, "interesting" results (insert favorite hot-spring/changing/touching/anime-nose-bleed-inducing moment here). And if you notice, the majority of it is not because he is a perv. Keitaro does not go stalking Naru or anything like that. He knows that she and Motoko would kill him if he did. The majority of it is just bad timing (going into Naru's room for a book as she is changing), or just plain old bad luck (slipping on a banana peel, causing him to slip and touch Naru in an innopropriate place), meant to have humerous results ("YOU PERVERT!" *punches perv into sky*).

Now for the cocky bad a**. Many anime characters, like Mugen, are loved for just that reason. He's, in a sense, what people wish they could be, a confident, tough bad a** that doesn't have to take ******* from anybody. Of course we know that we can't actually act like this in real life. Doing so would be asking for a beating. But hey, it's nice to dream, right?

I personally don't think its sterotypical since in many anime/manga not all men are either the shy/nerdy type now the cocky/jerk type. It's only those anime/manga you guys have mentioned. There really isn't a sterotype to the men of anime. It all depends on the variety of anime you watch. Like in Love hina, of course there are the typical men but it doesn't mean all animes are like that.
