Shadow the Hedgehog

I have this game. It's a load of fun watching the cinematics. They're not bad at all. Even in game graphics are pretty good.

As Grave Yard said, though, the controls are really bad. It's hard to get Shadow to move straight in one direction, and because you have a choice to be "bad" or "good" throughout the game, if you touch ANYBODY you lose your rings. 'twas a terribly annoying feature.

This is my first Sonic game in 3D. I got it mostly to see how well the high speed 2d platformer could adapt to 3d. but I think I'll stick to my Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Sega Genesis. (Now if only I could find the cables for it...)

Yes I agree about the controls which was my one real turn off on the game. It felt as if they were to sensetive and just when you think you are running to fast..BAM! You ran off a ledge.. I did slightly liked the fact that you were able to use vehicles and such however. That wierd jumping mobile was pretty cool.

It just feels wrong in my own kind of way to be able to use weapons in a sonic game. Wasnt the origional point of the game was a high speed game with fast paced combat? Here however you have to stop many times on end to be able to complete an action or finish an objective for one side of a mission.

So right now if you would excuse me.. I am going to go and play Sonic Adventure 2 on my wonderful dreamcast ^_^

I myself am also a Sonic Sega Genesis fan, but if you set aside all that, it's not a bad game. In fact I found myself very entertained by it, and I like that the levels are hard (in terms of control, sensitivity, loosing rings, those are all things you adapt to in a game) but don't go on forever (like they do in effing Final Fantasy). The good and evil feature is intresting and I look forward to seeing what the different outcomes are.
Wow, so this game is really that bad? I have read a couple of reviews here and there, but I always kept hoping that perhaps the game wasn't actually as bad as they were saying it was. Glad I didn't buy it, I guess.
You can't be serious.

Then again, I grew up with Sonic. I'm assuming a lot of you didn't. So, to be fair, it may be natural that your outlooks should be different. It's just that the moment I saw the first images of Shadow holding a realistic gun and driving a car--red alarm bells went off in my head. At first I thought it was a joke. When I learned that it was real I winced as a Sonic fan. I couldn't believe how low Sega had sunk. I knew that this game was going to be a soulless attempt to infuse the Sonic license with the "attitude" teenagers seem to like nowadays. I suppose we can all thank the Grand Theft Auto franchise for that. Instead I'll just put most of the blame on Sega being terrible and not giving their fans what they truly want--a real Sonic game.

I just want a traditional Sonic game that properly utilizes the technology it's on. The closest thing we have to that right now is the portable series on GBA and Nintendo DS. As far as the console versions go, Sega needs to just sit back and develop a new engine that actually works for the series instead of using the ancient Dreamcast engine. We've seen successful 2D franchises brought into 3D. It's possible to give the Sonic franchise the same treatment without forcing a character full of generic rage upon us. It's really disgusting and I don't see how anyone could support this soulless marketing ploy by spending money on it. Please don't support this garbage. How could anyone even begin to think that Shadow the Hedgehog has a chance of being anything but terrible? Again, I say this as a person who grew up loving the Sonic games.

Ah well, there's always the next generation Sonic title they've been showing off in brief clips--but I honestly don't think that looks like it's going to fix many of the problems the 3D incarnations are suffering from either. Sad, really. Sega has fallen a lot in my eyes. Instead of striving to be original, they've done quite the opposite and cheapened themselves.

Long Live DC!!!

I'm sorry, but adding a gun to a Sonic game is just stupid. If I worked at Sega, I would have taken one look at the cover and thrown it in their face. Sonic+Gun=TRY AGAIN.

As a long standing Sonic fan myself, I carry many of the same views as Charles. Now, I have not played the game but I have read quite a bit about it. The second I saw trailers for this game, I was worried. I honestly feel that guns have no place in a Sonic game. Though can you really call it a Sonic game if Sonic doesn't appear in it (Or does he? I don't know actually.)?

I read a review about the game in Game Informer in which they gave the game a 5 out of 10, and for what seemed to be good reasons. After reading the rest of the posts in this thread, I guess they were right.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I have no intention of even renting this game because it really just doesn't look good. I love the Sonic series but come on... a gun?

Yeah, I'm one of those people who grew up with Sonic as well. He's been my favorite game character since I was a little hombre'.

Anyhow, I bought the game. I agree with you all, it's another attempt at a fast moving Sonic game with complexity driven into it making it hard to do everything. I wouldn't say Sega as a company has gone downhill, but the developers for Sonic, Sonic Team have been pulling the company into the **** holes.

Anyways, I'm prolly gonna go through this one and try and beat it for the sake of knowing what the hell Shadow's past is or whatever.

I'm not worried about the sonic franchise though. Next year, around the time of Playstation 3's release, Sonic Team is going to release "Sonic the Hedgehog." Yeah, that's the title, and it's a back to basics. Like what the 2D games where like but in 3D.

He's in it. As is Knuckles and I'm not sure how many others.
The only thing is, he only runs along side with you, and tells you what to do. "X button does this, blah blah blah" You don't even get to use him in Multiplayer mode.

Hopefully they find a way to finally make the game enjoyable in 3D at least. I thought the first Sonic Adventure was great when it came out but it hasn't aged well. Subsequently none of the newer Sonic games which use its engine are any good at all.

As an aside, from what I've heard Shadow says things like "hell" and "damn." That of course, bothers me a lot because it's an additional way in which the developers tried to force the protagonist to adopt generic rage. It's a disturbing trend that seemed silly in the Jak series, almost ruined the Prince of Persia series, and stains what rubble remains of the Sonic legacy. It's so forced and artificial that it's completely ineffective.

Are you kidding me? That was the best move naughty dog made. Jak 2 and Jak 3 are some of my favorite games of all time. I loved the dark gritty feel of both. The shooting was a great addition and was well executed.

Getting back on topic Shadow the Hedgehog as everyone said has terrible controls. Im sorry but I cant play a game with terrible controls. It completely takes you out of the experince.

In fact, I had a chance to receive a free copy of Jak 2 after Sony sent me a demo disc that erased my memory card--and I never bothered. I much prefer Ratchet and Clank. Especially if you're talking about the shooting aspect.

In any case, Jak 2 wasn't dark and gritty. Something like Manhunt--that's dark and gritty (although I find that game guilty of being appalling just for the sake of gaining attention too). Fatal Frame and Silent Hill are further examples of "dark and gritty." Forcing an emo attitude on mascot platform characters can't achieve that atmosphere. It was a transparent attempt to turn a 180 and capitalize on the apparent tastes of gamers after the successful Grand Theft Auto craze. What occured wasn't genius, just unimaginative marketing.

That's the same thing Sega is doing with Shadow the Hedgehog. Sega isn't going back to the drawing board and fixing the laundry list of problems plaguing the current formula; they're simply trying to make their franchise seem more "hip" to the tastes of today's consumer with such an obvious ploy. I mean, why the heck does Shadow need to drive a car when he can run much faster? The entire scenario doesn't even make sense in the context of the Sonic universe.

I would like to say that they've failed at manipulating people, but judging by the fact that people are even playing this game leads me to believe otherwise, unfortunately. Hopefully the sales are poor.
