Act your Age!

The sad truth is that it really is advice that should be followed. While you don't need to fit a specific criteria; it should be a general rule of life-philosophy that when one is in his/her mid twenties, they should buck up and accept many of life's responsibilities. Similarly, when you are fifteen, I don't care what you think you know; you are not ready to accept much responsibility or take on much of life's challenges. Just enjoy the fact that you are still young and that school is 'relatively' easy. Enjoy the fact that after 3:00 (or whenever school gets out) you have the whole day to yourself, and that summers are a time for you to relax. Don't worry about finding love or having sex, that will come when you are ready for it. Take your formative teenaged years to discover yourself by yourself, and make friends who will enjoy the discovery as well! Most of all, appreciate what you have- it very well be as good as it gets if you don't.

Well some people mature before others, If I would act my age, 16, I would be boy-crazy and running around just thinking about going to the mall and all that stuff, just like many girls my age I've seen. My mom says I act like a 60 year old an I don't enjoy life but always trying to find every single answer, I rather act like that than acting my age.
but you can't go on forever liking pokemon, right?
What's wrong with liking something for your entire life?
Why do you haev to change your interests if you're at an older age?

I think acting one's age is like what Drix said, all about responsiblity. As you get older, more responsibility is required. It's not about chasing boys, going to the mall, the way you look, or what your interests are.

Even if you're 80 years old you shouldn't feel guilty about liking something.

I've been asking this of the world since the third grade when I was picked on for liking Pokemon. What you take interest in should not be dictated by your age. My mom is 40 and listens to heavy metal. Im fourteen and I like Pokemon (though I do like things "my age" also, Im just making a point)

I also agree with what Drix said.

I believe taking responsibilty for things, such as CC payments, tuition bills, returning things you borrow from friends/anyone is important for "acting your age." If you're in your mid-twenties and cant do these things, then you seriously do need to grow up. But acting goofy (like me, hehee!) and having interests in things like Pokemon shouldnt allow people to condensend their opinions of what is an age approrpriate "interest". I hate people like that! I have a freind who is always tell me to "behave" in public. Just because I enjoy having friendly conversation with a cashier/other people in line doesnt mean I'm not "acting my age." I'm being sociable, but she'll never see it that way.

Hey, not all 16 year olds are boy crazy... Unless, that means I don't act my age?!

But, what makes me angry is when my friends say act your age and not my shoe size! I say screw it, I act how I want to act!

Another thing one of my friend's told me was that I should get a boyfriend so I'll stop acting like a kid.

But, there's a time and a place to act childish, right?

Mhm.

"Act you age!" is a way of telling someone that they are acting either clumsy or childish when those traits are not usually found in their nature. Usually the person who uses the phrase is trying to make you stop doing whatever your doing.

I don't think that having a certain interest, such as Pokemon, is not something you have to grow out of. It's simply something that you enjoy very much, whether its playing the cards or watching the anime, or even playing the game.

You don't have to stop doing a hobby just because someone tells you to act your age and stop.

That is just not right.

Well I guess it's a matter of interpretation. If were talking about responsiblity then I can see where some people might have the right to say that. Let's face it, there are a lot of people ou there who don't take responsiblity for there actions. Now if werer talking about general goofing off, then they can just shove it, because whodies't still have fun just doing whatever and haveing fun with it. It all depends on how you use it I suppose.

Hahahahaha... I wish that's what my life at 15 was like.

I homeschool so I can do school at night and have enough time to work 5 days a week [I don't work on Wednesday, I have my college prep classes]. I'm graduating this year [hopefully], so my school load has more than doubled. I work school through the summer. Mom figures I shouldn't waste my life doing nothing.

It's a good thing I like being busy and 'acting my age', otherwise I'd go nuts =P

I've matured a lot over the past year, I think. I used to be really immature before then. The main kicker was when Emilie dropped out of school, I became desensitized to the world around me and life just wasn't fun for me anymore. I think I've grown up a lot, but those who knew me before all this drama know that I used to be really crazy. I took depression medicine for half a year and noticed an improvement once I got off of it this summer.

Saying that, I think I act older than I am. There are certain things I'm not mature about, but I'm decidedly not girl-crazy, I make it a point to calm my younger friends down when they get hyper, and I've made a lot of choices that I plan on sticking to for the rest of my life. I have a friend my age who still has trouble with tying his shoes, so that's what I have to go off of, lol.

The reason why interests such as Pokemon are considered to be "immature" once you get to be a certain age is because the majority of your peers have already moved onto different things that are characteristic of their age group, such as girl/guy chasing and driving. When someone remains in a past 'stage,' if you will, peers look upon the person who has not moved to their interests as "immature."

That's how the world works... and for the most part, it's somewhat true. I mean, I would look at a thirty-year-old like they were crazy if they enjoyed watching Pokemon and battling with the cards, solely because it's something society has thought to be "childish." I'm sure many others would have my same reaction to such an encounter.

The problem I have with the phrase "act your age" is that people have different views on how to "act your age". For example, your parents would tell you to improve your behaviour to show maturity. However, your friends may want you to take more risks to show that you are an independant adult.

Personally, I think that people should just look after themselves as they get older, but still try to get fun out of life as much as possible.

You can go on liking Pokemon, Digimon, DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh! or what have you for as long as humanly possible; there's absolutely nothing wrong with liking childish shows/anime/cards. The problem comes into play when it becomes an obsessive habit, and the person becomes detached from their [adult] responsibilities and life.

Everything else that I would have said, Drix already covered.

RedSkyCoffee's mispelling looks like a simple typo and there is no reason for you to play mod and point fingers at other members spelling when yours is in need of improvement.

*raises eyebrow* Well, You spelled ?spelled? wrong, as well as supposed and you left out the ?to? after supposed and you don't capitalize anything. You also double posted, which is aginst the rules... So don't be a hypocrite.

I can't stand anyone my age. If being immature is fun for you, balance it with a little class. I have my manic immature moments, but I stress the comedy in them, and they don't last long.

Reminder to everyone: If you see someone breaking the rules please use the report button versus playing mod. Thanks!

Growing up I was always told that I was behaved more mature than my age. This of course made me wonder how I was suppose to be acting at that age. Now that I am an "adult" I am told I am suppose to act my age. I love anime and I don't have children. Apparently women my age should have a couple of kids already and be soccer moms. Meh, that just isn't my bag.

I think if there is a hobby you enjoy that you should not be ashamed of enjoying it at any age. :animesmil

I really don't think that each age has a certain quality that they have to achieve by the time their that old. I mean does that mean if you're two years old on the computer, and should be slapped and handed a bottle? I think not. Otherwise, I might of had brain damage and not be able to type this in the future.

Right now, I'm fifteen (Shameless plug: My birthdays tomorrow! WooT!), and I have many personality traits. I can't be calm and collected, totally gung-ho, or quiet and sarcastic. All at the same time.

The point is, if you're going to tell someone to up, you might as well say "Stop acting like an a-hole!!!!" :D

i hate that saying... it's stupid... you can only act the way you are, you cant be somthing you're not...

i concider myself to be a late bloomer (seriously late) in that i havn't experienced everything society dictates some one of my age should have... and you know what... i dont care... if you try and be like everyone else, when it truely doesn't make you happy, or you dont feal emotionally up to it, you're only gona make your life more stressfull, trying to be something you're not.

and anyone who sez watching kids shows is not acting your age is a fool... :catgirl:
