I haven't listened to any Japanese music in awhile, but...

Asian Kung Fu Generation are an amazing JRock band. Definitely one of my favourites. All of their music, although I don't understand it =P, is very catchy, and I try to wail along and make up words. So then not only is it great to listen to, it's fun as well XD And as for other genres? Try Utada Hikaru, Ayumi Hayasaki (sp?), and Boa. All very talented girls with very pretty voices. They're mostly JPop, and have some songs in English which are equally nice. Hope you can find something else you like ^^

I really like Japanese music, no matter the artist or genre. But I guess I shall name my favorite's.

Orange Range - Any song of theirs is incredibly fun to listen to. I usually like to bop my head up and down listening to the lyrics. I think they woud be considered R&B, I don't really know. But they are pretty good, so they get brownie points.

Utada Hiraku - (Exodus `04, Easy Breezy, Tokyo Nights) Utada has managed to become a superstar singer both in Japanese and English. The lyrics to most of her songs are very powerful and tell a story.

Utada Hiraku can be heard on the opening theme to "Kingdom Hearts" for the PlayStation 2.

That's it really. I don't have that many favorites in Japanese, I really like Thai music too.

I would have to say that I'm more into Gackt and L'Arc~en~Ciel right now. Although I do listen to some Pierrot and the pillows as well. So while Gackt and Laruku are sort of borderline J-Pop-ish (I'm not going to be the one to start a debate on what they are.) I still enjoy listening to the J-Rock.

Songs?

1) Vanilla [Acoustics] - This version of Gackt's naughtiest (not to mention one of the most popular) is played with simple guitars and is much more...calm sounding compared to the upbeat version. I listen to this at least three times a day.

2) My Dear - I love this song from Laruku's newest album. It's so...beautiful when translated into English.

3) Smiley Skeleton - This is one of my more treasured Pierrot songs. It's really loud and upbeat.

4) LAST DINOSAUR - the pillows wrote this song for FLCL and since buying the soundtrack a couple months ago, this one is my favorite.

Now that the two top artists/groups in my list have already been mentioned (Gackt and AKFG), let's shine the spotlight on Porno Graffiti, shall we? ♥

I just saw them perform in NHK's Red and White Show and they really don't look anything like them visual kei bands the name "Porno Graffiti" would evoke. In fact, their songs sound so down-to-earth that they somehow remind me of... SMAP (yeah, that's right!). Melissa is probably the most popular song they've released, with it being used in Full Metal Alchemist and all, but they've other songs that sound just as good, if not better, than Melissa. They always find a way to make their songs sound upbeat and interesting (Mugen!) even with relatively mellow songs like Ai ga Yobuhou e. That's talent, I tell you. Talent!

Well, most of the J-Music I listen to is because of anime, which I think is funny... :animeswea

I don't really know a lot of artists, but I try to after I hear a song I like in a Opening or Ending theme, then I check out the artist and branch off that artists music.

But some songs I like are:
Nakushita Kotoba by No Regret Life
Discord Satellite by Snorkel
Speed by Analog Fish
Last Dinosaurs by The Pillows
Colors by Utada Hikaru

I have some more, but...yeah... :animesigh

A couple years back, I was unhealthily obsessed with L'Arc~en~Ciel and Gackt.

But I'm not going to talk about them in length, because almost anyone who's into Japanese music already knows about them. Instead, here are some great artists that are almost completely overlooked in the anime fandom:

Shiina Ringo
Buck-Tick
B'z
Takui
Glay
Luna Sea
And, of course, X-Japan

In fact, here's a good webpage dedicated solely to Japanese artists.

omg, i love you forever. i love love Shiina Ringo, Buck-Tick and Luna Sea. not so much into the others, but it's lamentable how few people know about them. have you ever heard Sugizo's project The FLARE? they're awesome, but unfortunately recently broke up.

right now i'm heavily into the Japanese band Merry. i also love Daisuke Asakura, who's best known in this fandom as the producer who 'discovered' TMR and writes all his music, he also co-wrote all the music for the anime Gravitation and one of the characters, Tohma, seems to be modeled after him.

BTW to who mentioned it, Sobakasu is by Judy & Mary, though they've long since broken up, the vocalist YUKI has had a successful solo career and her stuff is pretty good.

Fukai Mori is Do As Infinity, a band i really enjoy.

Takui
Quoted for emphasis.
How could we forget about Takui? The guy's one amazing lyricist and his voice, though it may fundamentally sound similar to that of other artists, is able to convey so much emotion in a miniscule rise in pitch. I love Fukuoka to pieces. *swoons*

I saw a group named Group Tamashii in last year's Red and White Show and they sounded really, really...odd (in a rad, whimsical sort of way). Even their song "Kimi ni JUICE wo Katte Ageru" is devoid of sense. If anyone's got info on them, let me in on it, yeah?

When it comes to Japanese music, I generally lean towards the indies visual-kei side of the spectrum.

Bands like Vidoll, Alice Nine, Deadman, Rentrer en Soi, Ayabie, etc.

But then again, you can also never go wrong with Dir en grey, D'espairsRay, stuff like that.
