I really like to watch anime on Adlut Swim, but someone told me that to be a true anime fan you have to watch it in japanese w/english subtitles. They also said that you can't watch it in english first, then japanese. So do you have to watch it in japanese to be a real fan?

...I'd say that question was pretty random... :animeswea

But I don't THINK that you have to watch an anime in *** first in order to be a true fan.. unless there was some memo I didn't get. :animestun

I would think you would be more of a fan for watching every available version of an anime for the hell of it, but again, I was probably mail-jacked the day the memo was sent.

How silly of them! It shouldn't matter what language something is in. What should matter is the quality of the dub. There are some shows that I prefer in English dubs, and some that I prefer in Japanese (mostly because I was introduced to the sub first, and became very comfortable with it). Sometimes I'll watch both sub and dub if I think that both are done well.

The same concept applies to non-anime too. For example, I'm only going to watch the English dub of March of the Penguins because, to me, the French track silly.

I also don't agree with the second statement about not watching it in English first, then Japanese. I've done that with several anime series, mainly when I was new to the scene a few years ago. I'd be introduced to a series in English, via t.v. or something else, and I'd check out the sub to see if I liked it better. I remember liking the Inuyasha sub more than the dub, and the Fruits basket dub more than the sub (oh god, Tohru and Yuki's voice... D: ). It's all about quality.

That statement seems pretty elitist imo. Unless, for some bizarre reason, this friend has yet to watch a well done dub.

Ah, yes. Your friends have finally reached that stage in the life cycle of an otaku. Don't worry. It'll pass.

You don't have to watch every single anime you like in subs. I mean, with the legions of subbing groups out there, sometimes you'd be a lot better off with dubbed anime. Dialogue in the latter tends to sound more familiar and is usually well thought of as compared to subs.

Either a guy in subs is played by a man or a woman, and there is an obvious difference. Pains my ears.

I hardly watch subs, and my friends and I consider each other pretty seasoned anime fans. It's really rediculous to think that way, don't let them get to you.

As long as you watch the show and consider yourself and fan, then I don't really see why you should let anyone else tell you if you're a fan or not. It doesn't really matter if you can get your hands on subbed or not. What next? You need to speak fluent Japanese and watch the original episodes the day they come out?

i always go on what Hayao Myazaki had sed on the subject... that you should watch his films in your native language, that way your not missing out on the animation by trying to read subtitles...

i have no time for puritan otaku who scream bloody murder at anyone who watches anime in the english dub... and vice versa, i have no time for anyone who sez you shouldn't watch it in japanese... watch it however you want, which ever way makes you enjoy it more...

personally i like to watch it in english, and hardley ever in japanese. but thats just me...

Thank you for the help. I really like to watch anime, like Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell, but those are just a few :animesmil . Ijust didn't want to look stupid or anything. I agree with all of you that I should just watch it if I like it. And once again, Thank you all. :D

Of course my son.

And you must also integrate Japanese lingo into your everyday vocabulary - replace yes with 'hai' and sorry with 'gomen'. Try to contort your face into Japanese smiley's like these '^_^' and '-.-;;' in order to express emotion in the style of the true otaku! Fall over when embarassed and pretend it never happened.

I would give you more insight on the secrets of being an otaku, but I must update my Gundam Wing/Sailor Moon/Dragonball Z/Inuyasha/Card Captors fanfic, before my rabid fangirl readers get deprived of yaoi-incest-mpreg goodness.

(I couldn't resist)

Man times must have changed. When I started watching anime in 2001 dubs and the people who watched them were completely evil. I usually watch both if it's a series I care about. But, I find that I remember everything much better when I watch something dubbed.

I still think it's ridiculous how they won't play dubs at cons even though usually half the audience can't see the subs.

When I took the Otaku test or what not to see how hard core I was about anime in the Newtype magazine it seems that you do have to watch them in japanese to be "uber" hard core anime fan,but that doesnt mean you cant do both.....I generally do both when I can....I watch it dubbed and then japanese. ;)

Many people do not agree to watch English dubs because many English dubs change the stories and characrters. Take CardCaptor as an example. The original CCS is very different from the English dubbed version of CardCaptor in characterization and storyline. When watching Japanese animations, many perfer to watch what the Japaneses intented to make the show, not an English interpretation of the subject. It really depends on personal taste and the amount of modifications of specified shows.

Ok whoever told you these things is a moron. Heres why.

A. Adult swim anime is free which means its naturally good.
B. If you only speak english you will not be a fan of an anime where they only speak japanese beacause the whole time youll be like "wtf are they sayin!"
C. Your a true anime fan if you like any kiind of anime.

There you go.

I'm going to be the other side of the coin. I'm going to say yes you do have to watch some stuff with subs. :P Not because it's with subs though.

No I'm not saying that because I'm elitist, or a"Purist" Or because of the fact that I speak enough Japaneese to follow along. I'm going to say it because toonami/Adult swim is pretty limiting. It's good stuff. I saw it a few years ago in fansubs, and I'm watching some of it again, now. But at that time I origonally saw it, I was also watching ALOT of stuff that hasn't and probably won't make it to america.

I would probably say you like those series, but I wouldn't label you as an ANIME fan.(A fan of those series, maybe) I still have trouble labeling myself as a fan or otaku(And I'm watching somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 new anime series). :P For example I like the Florida Gators, And used to go to all their games. I didn't paint myself orange and blue and go shirtless in the winter. I wasn't a _Fan_.

In short I think your kind of focused in on just a few anime. Expand your Horizons :P

:animesigh not really. it all depends on how long you have watched anime and how much you are obsessed with it.

I believe there are some films you just can't watch in subs unless you can actually speak japanese. Like earlyier mentioned, any films from Miyazaki, or even from the new and rising star Makoto Shinkai. The Ghost in the Shell movies need to been seen dubbed, simply because half of the beauty of the movies is in the visuals they use.

I don't believe you need to watched subbed to be a true anime fan. I personally think it's just a phase alot of otakus go through in the first year to year and a half. They'll get over it soon enough and start learning to appreciate some of the dubbed material, since there really are a lot of good dub jobs out there. Alot more then people give credit for.

In my personal opinion, i think the japanese version of it is A LOT better from the few in japanese that i've been able to watch. As far as the order to watch them in, i would watch the japanese version first if i could, after all, the american version is always edited, because of children, so you may miss something, and i always prefer the unedited version, not ****** with, not changed in anyway, just the way it was meant to be. But no it does not make you less of a fan, i too am subjected to what adult swim and toonami have to offer, but here lately i have been finding the money to get the japanese version.
