Thames River Whale

A few days ago a bottle nosed whale was found swimming around in the Thames River through central London. They tried to carry it out to sea on a barge but unfortunetly it died about twenty minutes ago.

I don't think a lot of people realize that the ocean is the lungs of the Earth, and that the sea does the same thing to our atmosphere as plants. On a whole we're destroying the Earth and it's only a matter of time before it bites us all in the ***.

What do you think about the worlds current treatment of the ocean and its creatures? Do you think more should be done to 'save the whale' or that perhaps there are bigger issues at hand in todays world?

I don't think a realisation how much the sea is the "lungs of the earth" would have done anything to stop the whale swimming up the Thames to it's demise. Whales beach all the time. Had there been a few hundred whales in there, I might have gone "damn, now the world is getting screwed over."

Anyway, I reckon they should gift the remains to the Japanese, they're gagging for a good supply of whale meat right now.[/color]

Regarding the topic...it really should go without saying at this point that we really need to clean up our act on a global scale. I'm not talking about "Peak Oil" or bizarre crap like that, because it sounds like something that's being trumped up like nothing else. I'm talking about day-to-day signs that we're screwing things up. Habitats are in danger of radically changing, global temperatures aren't as stable as they could be...and in general, I've got this bizarre feeling we're not doing as well as we could be.

I don't know if this whale incident is testament to things getting worse, but I think we do need to re-consider how we go about doing things.

I wasn't sure if London, England had a Thames river though (I don't know my geography). Just checking. It would be odd if a whale came out of the great lakes.[/COLOR]

[COLOR=Sienna][FONT=Times New Roman]I don\t really see what this has to do with the pollution of our oceans... yes it's a problem and yes it's vital to earth's survival, but what does that have to do with some Whale winding up in the Thames? I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did in the Thames, which has been used as a toliet for thousands of years. Really, somtimes these things happen... animals get caught in places they don't want to be caught in. What were they supposed to do?

Instead of another man-destroying-the-environment issue (can somebody please explain to us the connection?), why don't we think of it as a natural process instead? Like when the bull sharks started to move into estuaries and freshwater environments. It's not like them sharks were driven inland by pollution, yeah? ^_^[/COLOR]

I was setting a mood talking about the whale. Many people are saying that it has brought to our realisation the fact that we as humans are abusing the seas and not doing enough. Not much to do with the whale, but rather what impact it had on people - how people grew attatched to a creature that otherwise would not have caused them concern.

I suppose juxtaposing an anecdote was too much of a mind bender, eh?

I think there's bigger issues at hand, yeah, but this is definitely one of the biggest. Bigger than sending a new space probe to Pluto, that's for sure, lol.

Next time try mentioning some semblance of a connection between a dead whale in a river and the importance of the ocean instead of just assuming anyone who reads it will figure out something so ambiguous themselves and insulting their intelligence when they don't.

Okay, I admit I didn't read the other posts but bear with me! XDD I think there are so many big issues in this world that even the governments don't know what to do. One day, you feel like solving the social problems. The next day, you want to solve the nature problems. And so on! We really made a mess of it! O.o
