This is my first attempt at fanfiction, and it's a Final Fantasy fanfic. I've only done the first chapter so far, and I'm going to begin on the next chapter on January 23rd. As I finish chapters, I will post them in this thread. Please review each chapter as it is posted; thank you. The spacing may appear strange on here, because I've just copied it straight out of MS Word, but I hope this is not a problem. There will be about six chapters in all when it is finished. Here it is:

Chapter I: The Journey Begins

?Squall! Rinoa! Where are you?? Headmaster Cid yelled from the deck of the brand new ship he had just purchased: the Vittorio. This was the ship he had been waiting to buy for over a year now. It was painted silver and green, the headmaster?s favorite colors. He didn?t exactly buy the ship for himself though. No, this ship was a special gift for Squall and Rinoa to use. It was built sleek for speed, and it had small living quarters below deck.
A moment after the headmaster had yelled, Squall and Rinoa appeared around a corner fifty feet away. They weren?t sure what kind of mission Cid was sending them on, or why he had chosen only them. They walked casually down the walkway, as the headmaster stood alone waiting impatiently for them, ?Will you two hurry up please??
Squall waved this comment away and kept the same pace, but Rinoa smiled and ran the rest of the way to the headmaster. Once Squall reached the ship, he and Rinoa boarded and met the headmaster: Squall with a light handshake and Rinoa an affectionate hug.
After the greeting and hugging, the headmaster led the two young SEEDs downstairs to the bar area to discuss the mission. ?Alright you two, listen up. This is not the common type of mission I?m sure you?re used to,? as he spoke he poured himself a mug of coffee. ?Your mission objective is to plant this chip,? he extracted a small blue chip from his coat pocket and showed it off, ?in the ground of any deserted island you choose that?s at least ten square miles large.? He took a break from speaking and sipped his black coffee from his silver mug.
Squall, his head resting on his right hand, finally spoke up, ?You?re kidding. Don?t you have another mission that?s actually worth our time?? Rinoa didn?t look too thrilled either; she was actually beginning to drool out of the corner of her mouth.
When the headmaster put down his mug he grinned and said, ?Look, I know it doesn?t sound too intoxicating, but it?s the only mission we need doing at the moment.? Squall closed his eyes with a sigh and Rinoa laid her head down on the bar. ?Now, the reason we need you to do it is because you two know how to navigate these ships the best, and I like you,? he added with a wink. ?Once this chip?s planted, we can digitally map out the island it?s in for our big plan.?
At these last words both Squall and Rinoa raised their heads in interest. Squall rubbed his eyes and yawned. Rinoa spoke, ?So what?s the big plan??
Cid sat there thinking a moment before he replied, ?I suppose I could tell you. It might make you a bit more enthusiastic about the mission.? He took another sip of his coffee. ?Well, we plan on building an ultimate Garden there. It will be the largest and best of all; nothing will compare.?
Rinoa flashed a shiny smile, ?Wow! That would be great! But?how would you afford such a project??
Cid returned the smile, ?Well, I?ve been saving money for this for about fifteen years now, and I?ve got a few friends who can help me out. Just don?t even worry about it; just make sure you get this chip into the ground,? he said and handed the chip to Rinoa.
Rinoa took the chip and, after looking it over a couple times with a high degree of interest, placed it safely in her leather purse. Squall looked around the bar and muttered, ?Looks like we?re packed well.?
Cid was just able to make out Squall?s words, ?Yeah, there?s plenty of food, drink, and supplies on this ship for more than one voyage. Also, your suitcases were put into the bedroom earlier this morning.?
Rinoa was quick to reply, ?You mean bedrooms??
Cid laughed at this, ?Oh no, I almost forgot to tell you about that. You two will be sharing a room.? Squall shifted uncomfortably on his stool and Rinoa?s face turned crimson. ?And?there?s only one bed.?
Rinoa?s face turned scarlet and Squall actually fell of the stool with a thud. He then stood up, rubbing his sore head, ?You?ve got to be kidding.?
Cid finished his coffee, sat the mug in the sink, and spoke, ?No, I?m not. But you and Rinoa can work out the sleeping arrangements later. Right now I need to set the ship?s system to auto and get you guys out to sea. Are you ready?? Squall and Rinoa nodded in unison. ?Good, then follow me.? Cid led the two back upstairs into the spring air.
Rinoa ran to the rail and gazed out at the horizon. ?So, how many islands are out there??
Cid scratched his balding head. ?No one knows for sure. I?m sure there?s at least a couple hundred. I?ll be right back,? and with that he disappeared into the control room to set the computer.
Rinoa went to stand by Squall, ?So, are you ready for the cruise?? She smiled up at him, the one person who made her life meaningful.
Squall was slow to reply, ?Yeah, sure. Whatever.? Squall had no idea how much Rinoa loved him. He wasn?t too big on relationships, but he couldn?t help but feel something for Rinoa. He wasn?t sure what it was; maybe it was love.
Cid returned from the control room to say goodbye. ?Okay, the ship?s set to take off in three minutes at full speed. Do you two have any questions before I depart??
Squall had a question, ?Yeah, my gunblade?s in the bedroom below deck, right??
Cid nodded, ?Yes it is, indeed. You have nothing to fear.? Squall nodded. ?Any more questions??
Squall shook his head and Rinoa spoke, ?No, we?re good. We?ll see you in a few days!? Rinoa smiled and gave the headmaster a second hug.
?Alright, good luck, and may the Guardians be with you!? Cid saluted the SEEDs and descended the steel ramp back to the ground below.
Squall decided to go back down below deck to find his gunblade, but Rinoa stayed on the deck so that she could see the sunset that would soon bless the sky with a radiant beauty.
*******
Later that evening, Squall was still below deck polishing his precious gunblade; his gunblade was the only item in the world he really cared for. Rinoa had remained on deck, and now the sun was falling below the horizon.
As the sun?s golden fingertips fell upon Rinoa?s figure, she appeared a softly glowing angel. She couldn?t believe how beautiful the sunset was on the open seas; it stole the breath from her.
Soon, though, the sun was completely gone from view, and a thousand twinkling stars and one full, beautiful moon now lit up the sky. Rinoa had never seen the moon so close or so bright before. I can?t keep this to myself, she thought. I have to share this view with Squall! She dashed down the wooden stairs to find Squall sitting on the old leather couch polishing his gunblade. She couldn?t see how he could spend so much time on one thing.
?Squall! Can you come upstairs real fast? I have something to show you,? she announced with a lovesome smile.
Squall paused what he was doing and raised his head. His hair was a veil to his eyes, ?Can it wait? I?m almost finished with this.?
Rinoa sighed, holding her hands behind her back. ?Yeah, okay.? She stood in the same place in silence for ten long minutes while Squall completed his lengthy task. When he finally stood up and placed his gunblade in its protective case, Rinoa spoke, ?Alright Squall, come on!? Rinoa pleaded. Squall brushed the hair out of his eyes and adjusted his leather jacket; he nodded and followed as Rinoa led him up to the deck.
When he emerged into the cool night air he saw what Rinoa had brought him here for. The giant moon in the vast atmosphere that surrounded him made Squall feel rather insignificant in the world, like a speck of dust on a black cape. Squall tried to speak, but no sound could he utter.
?It?s marvelous isn?t it, Squall?? asked Rinoa. Squall simply nodded, as it was all he could do at the moment.
Squall was standing staring at the firmament with his hands upon the cold steel railing. Rinoa paced slowly over to him and put her arm around his waist. She wasn?t sure how he would react, and she was surprised but pleased when he put his own arm around her.
Rinoa couldn?t believe that Squall was actually being affectionate. He didn?t really seem like a caring guy to her; maybe she was wrong about him. She looked up at him, the moonlight reflecting in her eyes. ?Captivating, isn?t it??
Squall finally found his voice, ?It is, I guess. I was just thinking?? Squall let go of the railing and brought his attention away from the heavens and back down to earth.
Rinoa spoke quietly, ?And what were you thinking of??
Squall replied in the same tone, ?Of the islands. I was wondering: do you think this mission will really be so simple? I mean, how are we supposed to tell if an island is ten square miles?? Rinoa shrugged. ?And what if there are wild monsters of immeasurable power awaiting us on one of those islands?? Squall looked out at the moonlit horizon, ?Are you not afraid at all??
Rinoa put a hand on Squall?s muscular chest, ?Actually, to be honest, I?m not. I really haven?t thought about all the negative aspects yet.?
Squall released himself of Rinoa?s arm and took a few steps away from her. Rinoa thought to herself, Typical of Squall. She decided not to bother him; he obviously needed some time to himself.
Rinoa went below deck to finally go to sleep at 10:00 at night. Squall decided to sleep on the deck underneath the diamonds of Heaven. He slept like a baby upon the rocking boat on the open sea that night, as did Rinoa.
*******
The Vittorio moved slowly but swiftly through the calm waters as Squall lay on the deck snoring. The sun had just recently appeared, shedding its golden light upon everything in range, including the slumbering Squall.
The bright rays of the sun ended squall?s dream of nude, dancing wood nymphs early. Despite his eyes being closed, the sunlight was still bright enough to awaken Squall. He sat up slowly and stretched his arms while yawning. He rubbed his eyes and looked around. It took him a minute to remember why he was in the middle of the ocean on a ship deck.
As Squall stood up, he noticed that an abstract form was disturbing the straight line of the horizon. He squinted and still could not make out what the shape was, so he went into the control room and retrieved the binoculars. When he looked through them he was able to see that it was a landmass he was seeing.
He returned the binoculars and went below deck to get something to eat. He was excited to see land finally, but he didn?t show it. He grabbed a blueberry muffin out of a large basket on the bar and practically inhaled it, and then he did the same to a second muffin. Afterwards he poured a glass of red grape juice and drained it in a couple of seconds.
Squall was just about to go back upstairs when he heard Rinoa scream; he turned and sprinted into the bedroom where she was standing on a chair with a look of horror on her face. Fortunately, Rinoa was dressed, or there might?ve been more screaming. Squall couldn?t see that anything was amiss. ?Why?d you just scream??
Rinoa pointed to the ground and Squall heard her say, ?Spider.?
Squall sighed. He decided to be nice and help Rinoa, so he found the spider and destroyed it with his boot. ?Happy?? he asked her.
Rinoa smiled wide and said, ?Thanks, Squall! You?re the best.? She hopped down to the floor and kissed Squall on the cheek before exiting the room. Squall?s face turned a light shade of red as he turned and followed Rinoa. She made herself a large bowl of whole-wheat cereal and took her time eating it. Squall sat on the couch reading a novel: Silvio of the Seventh Realm.
The time passed in silence as Rinoa ate her breakfast. When she at last stood up and placed her empty bowl in the sink, Squall closed his book and rose to his feet. ?I have something to show you, Rinoa.?
Rinoa looked at Squall with an expression of curiosity on her face, ?What? Where?? Squall pointed upwards. ?What, the sky??
Squall shook his head, ?No, not the sky. Just come up and you?ll see.? He started upstairs. Rinoa followed with interest. ?I saw it when I woke up this morning.? Rinoa still had no clue what Squall was speaking of.
As they emerged on the deck, however, it seemed that Squall wouldn?t be showing anything to Rinoa. A dense fog now obscured everything. Squall was wide-eyed, ?What the hell? It was sunny and clear out here just thirty minutes ago!?
Rinoa wasn?t as shocked as Squall, ?Well, maybe that?s just the way this part of the sea behaves at this time of day.?
Squall scoffed, ?Rinoa, the ocean doesn?t just -? his sentence was cut short by a violent rocking of the ship. Squall and Rinoa had to hold on to safety boards to keep from being knocked down. ?Bloody hell!?
Rinoa was now suddenly terrified, ?Squall! What?s happening?? This was a silly question.
?Hell if I know!? yelled Squall. The silence that had occupied the sea earlier had been replaced now with the loud crashing of waves and the screeching of the violent winds. ?We should go back downstairs though!? Rinoa acted as though she hadn?t heard him, so Squall beckoned for her to follow. She nodded and walked carefully behind Squall to return below deck.
Once they were safely inside with the door shut tight, Rinoa sighed and pulled her hair back out of her face. ?Are we in a storm or something??
Squall shrugged, ?I guess. Why didn?t we get to use an airship??
?Because Cid probably thought that in an airship we wouldn?t be able to see the islands as well.?
Squall replied, ?Well it would?ve been much safer. Besides, we can?t see anything in this.? Rinoa nodded in agreement. Suddenly the ship shook violently again, and Squall fell off of the couch. ?Damn!? He stood up and held on to the bar to keep from falling again. ?I guess we?re not safe anywhere.?
As Rinoa tried to move closer to Squall, the ship gave a great jerk and then it went sideways, rocks crashing into its wooden frame. Squall and Rinoa were knocked and bashed around violently.
Upon a vast tropic island the Vittorio crashed, broken and demolished like a fallen soldier. Rain began to fall.
