I first came into contact with the Tenchi series back when the Sci-fi network still ran anime early on Saturday mornings. They showed the movie Tenchi in Love, I hated it. A few weeks later they began showing the series on Cartoon Network and although a bit skeptical as to whether I should watch it or not I did. I have to say I am very glad, Tenchi has to be one of my favorites.

Like just about everyone I always leaned more toward Ryoko, but I don't despise Ayeka. I always liked the sadness in Ryoko's character, y'know the whole tough exterior soft interior dealy. She was, for lack of a better word, misunderstood and in some odd sort of way I related with her. I was also a huge fan of Ryo-o-kee, that is one adorable cabbit!

I was always more partial to Ayeka. Yes, she was kind of annoying and overly jealous... but when Ryoko wasn't around, she was hardly a problem.

I used to be pretty into this show. I actually own the entire subtitled set of Tenchi Universe tapes. I've been trying to get rid of them for awhile, but no one ever wants them heh.

When it comes to the Universe series, I can't begin to choose a mate for Tenchi. However, when it comes to the OVA, I choose Ryoko, with Tsunami and Washu tieing in second place. In the OVA, I always got the impression that Ayeka wanted to be with Tenchi because it was more convenient for her. Her fiance was Yosho, who she believed to be dead. Tenchi was Yosho's heir, and is much better than the suitor her father had waiting back on Jurai. Ayeka didn't really show any sort of affection (or respect) toward Tenchi until she thought about Tenchi's connection to the royal family. He was courteous to her that entire episode, but she didn't respect him back until she thought to herself that Tenchi was her brother's descendant.

In Universe, it's a toss-up. Really, it could be either one (Ryoko or Ayeka).

In Tokyo, I choose Ryoko again. She's the only one who trusted Tenchi not to visit him everyday. Plus she was the only one to ask him out on a proper date.

Wow, I'm glad to see another person who likes Ayeka. I really hated Ryoko. She was so sluttish to me and it was too pushy and brute. I really hate girls like that in real life, so I couldn't possibly like an anime girl with the same attributes.

Tony, I wouldn't mind taking those off your hands, lol, but you know me, I'm broke. ^_^ Maybe one day I'll just steal them from you.

This reminds me of how Tifa and Aeris fans used to wrangle back in the day....

....Anyway. Speaking of Tenchi girls, I wasn't very fond of Sakuya (from Tenchi in Tokyo). I almost cried during the episode in which Ryoko saw her
kissing Tenchi. If I remember correctly, she turned out to be the pawn of evil forces--or something to that effect. I have almost no recollection of Tokyo's plot; it wasn't nearly as memorable as Universe or Muyo.
For those of you who have seen any of the Tenchi series in Japanese, how do their dub and sub voices compare? I think that Ayeka's English VA may have had something to do with my dislike of her. >_>

Well, it's been awhile... but obviously Ayeka doesn't have that faux-accent she does in the English dub. I think the problem with that accent is that it makes her seem too proper. When combined with her personality it just makes her come off even more snobby than she normally would. At least in my opinion.

I can't say I prefered one over the other... but I did much prefer Tenchi's Japanese voice. He doesn't sound as dull heh. How that many girls can like a guy that sounds like that, I have no idea.

I like the way that worked out, lol.

Either way, I do agree that Ryoko was a bit sluttish, but it was more like that whole idea of the hooker with a heart of gold. Despite all her faults her love for Tenchi was true, and to me she always seemed to love him the most, the most willing to sacrifice for his happiness. He didn't deserve her, in my oppinion.

I'm with anatema. Ryoko comes off as pushy and slutty, but she's a whole lot softer on the inside. Here's someone who was basically programmed for violence all of her life. Everything she's ever done has been blunt and forceful. Of course she's going to be a little slutty. However, when worse comes to worse, Ryoko turns out to be the most emotional one there. In "Midsummer's Eve," you get a really good look at how Ryoko feels toward Tenchi. Here's someone who has been shot at and cut up by the best, but she was never more hurt than when Tenchi slapped her. Hell, I had a cathartic moment when he apologized to her on the roof.

I always get this feeling that Ryoko would sacrifice anything for Tenchi. She'd kill for him, die for him. She gave up crime the day she met him.

Come to think of it, she does deserve better.

Ayeka has her good qualities, of course. She gave up her duties as princess numerous times. She stayed by Tenchi's side, even though her father obviously doesn't like him. She's a princess. People wait on her hand and foot all of the time, but she learned to be an Earthly housewife. She also seems to have fallen in love with the Earth. While it seems Ryoko wants to sweep Tenchi away, Ayeka is content with just staying on Earth with him. She'd rather give up her home than take him to Jurai.

But what can Tenchi do? Just as sure as they love him, he probably loves them both equally. As annoyed as he gets with their fights, you can tell he wants both of them to stay around. If he chooses one, the other will most likely leave. We get to see a lot of Ryoko and Ayeka's fights, but we never get an idea of what kind of struggle Tenchi is going through in his own mind. For all we know, he could be a lecher who just wants to be surrounded by as many women as possible. Who knows.

Therein lies the interesting thing about Tenchi Muyo!; namely, Tenchi is as interesting as watching grass grow. He's bland, boring, and ocassionally annoying. They never really explained how, once he piqued a girl's interest, he managed to hold it.

Really, you'd think Ryoko wouldn't go for Tenchi at all, because they're simply too different. You'd think Ayeka wouldn't because he has little ambition. Yet they do, mostly because the series would'nt work without that condition. But, seriously, he should have choosen a girl a while ago. Until Tenchi in Tokyo, I thought he might be gay. I mean, really, not to ever show interest in one of the girl at this point really stretches things.

I always thought Tenchi needed a foil character, like maybe another cousin, who would react how an actual guy would react; he'd be nervous or intimidated, sure, but he would actually develope a crush on one of the girls, and pursue it. I'd like to see that, particularly how said girl would react to another "average guy's" advances.

Thats bad, but I have to agree with you on that. and I feel ashamed of not thinking about that myself...Just kidding

But I think I have an answer for you about Tenchi and the weird love thing he's going through. I serious feel that these ladies are going after Tenshi doto the fact that they can't have em.
You know like going for a girl who's out of your league, trying to impress her and sway her. Or trying to go after your best friends man or girl because he/she has him/her (sorry that was confusing wasn't it.)
I think thats what they are going through. They just want him because they can't have em. Hopefully one day they'll learn...Oh thay wasnt for the character that was for the people who actually do that....

I personally really enjoy Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe...and to a significantly less extent Tenchi in Tokyo.

This makes me exceptionally bitter (UK fans will know what I speak of) that Toonami have gotten rid of it along with Gundam Wing. I would not mind that if it were not for the way in which the only way, currently, to get Tenchi on DVD here is to import the region 1 from the US.

In any case, why is it that no-one seems to discuss Kiyone as a great character? She may not have been in Muyo, but she is still a great character and one of the few sane characters in the show. Perhaps it would have been better for Tenchi if he'd got together with her.

I love Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi's Universe, but I hate Tenchi in Tokyo. Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi's Universe are funny and they have good plots. Tenchi's Universe is my absolute favorite Tenchi series. It is great and I like of all the characters are introduced.
The reason why I don not really like Tenchi in Tokyo is because, 1, Ryoko goes super bad, 2, has a stupid plot, and, 3, Tenchi falls in love with this one girl. (I forgot her name because it was so long ago.)
My favorite characters out of all of them are Ryo-oki, Washu, and Ryoko. Ryo-oki is cute. Ryoko is very funny to watch. Washu is funny, and in
in either Muyo or Universe, I don't remember which, we get the chance to see Washu's caring and serious side when she babysits this one baby.
I love tenchi Muyo, but i agree. Tenchi is just so boring. I dont understand why all the girls like him so much. He may be nice and strong, but he's not cute AT ALL! Ryoko and Ryo-ohki are my favorites. I don't like Ayeka. She just bothers me.

Apparently there is a new Tenchi Muyo coming out. Tenchi is supposed to finally pick a girl. I saw it in either Animerica or Anime Insider. I don't remember which one it is. I'll find the artical and I'll type it on her. It comes out this year though! I hope its Ryoko! ^^

I've never seen it, but I hear that Tenchi GXP has only a loose tie in with the other Tenchi series. It takes place in the same universe.

Tenchi might have seemed like he was in a great situation, what with a bunch of women fawning over him, but lets think about his options.

Ryoko: A powerful cyborg with a love for destruction. (they never say it directly, but they hint at it a lot)

Ayeka:
His great aunt.
Washu: An extremely weird 20,000+ year old scientist.

Mihoshi: A really clumsy ditz!

Sasami: Have fun waiting for grass to grow on the field.

Kiyone: Workaholic!

Sakuya: Beotch!

Yep. If I were him, I'd probably try to remain nuetral and get out of the situation as soon as possible. I don't particularly want to grow old with a weirdo.

I I had to choose, I'd probably take Kiyone. (even if that isn't an option initially) Workaholics can be cracked if you take away or nullify the element that makes them want to work so bad.

where i am, the only series that have been aired are tenchi muyo and tenchi universe.

i've seen every episode of muyo (i think) and it kicks so much backside it's unbelievable.

my favorite moment would probablyy be when aeyaka discovers that tenchi's father is her groom-to-be. (the look on her face was priceless)

ryoko is probably the best character in terms of humor.

Having recently bought the thirteen episode OVA series, I have been wondering about a few things.

The cronology, first off. Can anyone tell me which series fits where into the timescale? Secondly, there are some things that are left unexpl, ained in the OVA, the only one i can think of now is the lighthawk wings, i'm sure there is more behind those things.

Anyway, any clarity help would be appreciatted.
