Rick Hunter
Wow this is going to take a bit of explaining to do so play attention: Tenchi Muyo Ova--Basically this is the first 2 ova series put together to make the first 13 episodes. Characters are the same from the manga version which include, Tenchi, Ayeka, Ryoko, Mihoshi, Sasami, and ryu-ohki. Tenchi Universe--This is basically a Tv version of Tenchi Muyo the storyline of this series is not based on muyo nor has anything to do with the ova series. This is the series in which Kiyone is introduced as Mihoshi's partner from the "Mihoshi special" of Muyo. Also certain characters and origins of them have been changed, such as Kagato who in this version was Lord Kasuhito's (Grandpa) best friend. Who in this series is posing as the Jurai King. Tenchi in Tokyo-- This is another alternate universe of Tenchi Muyo. Once again in this series all the origins of main characters are changed. This series has the introduction of Several new characters never before present. Tenchi GXP-- Spin-Off series of Tenchi Muyo. All the characters in this series are no way related to the characters of Tenchi Muyo (Ova), The only character that has some relation to another one is Mihoshi's Mother. This series follows the exploits of Senin and mihoshi's best friend. Tenchi Muyo In Love--First Tenchi movie, This movie is based off the Tenchi Universe series. It also gives us a different Origin for Tenchi's mother and her past. Tenchi the movie 2-- Second Tenchi movie, this movie supposidly falls into the Tenchi Universe series, but at the same time introduces a new character to the cast Maiyuka who we never seen in any of the other series. Tenchi Forever (Tenchi Muyo in Love 2)-- Third and final movie, once again this movie is based off the Tenchi Universe series but was made with the same animation team of Tenchi in Tokyo. This movie actually takes place after the series finale of Tenchi Universe. Now that we got that somewhat cleared up your probably wondering what is the true follow up to Tenchi Muyo (Ova series), this would be the third ova series entitled ironically Tenchi Muyo Ryo-ohki 3. This series picks up where the first 13 episodes left off. Also some important changes are made to the cast with the Introduction of Tenchi's arranged bride, and his sister. Also for storyline purposes tenchi's mother name is changed to Kiyone not the universe version. So to break it down simply Tenchi Muyo is the true storyline of Tenchi the rest are basically just: Alternate Universes: Tenchi Universe, Tenchi In Tokyo, Movies So if you're looking for a continuation go out and buy the new Ova's that have just been released. Hope this clears things up for you a bit, the world of Tenchi is vast and confusing.
Lord Dante
Ah I see. The others don't follow on from the OVA at all, they just show alternate views of the characters. I need to do some indipendent reserch on this now, and its a shame that only the OVA is available in england.

But it's still good to watch all the other series just to compare how the story was changed so much along with the animation from the original. Lord Dante
I hope the Tenchi muyo: ryo-ohki 3 series is a direct follow on from tenchi muyo! OVAs, as there were quite a lot of things surrounding the characters of Lady Tokimi and D3 that needed explaining. Also It would be nice if something was uncovered about tenchi's supposed power. As durining and after the fight with kagato It appeared to me to be portrayed as "yeah he can do X Y and Z" with no real explanation or investigation (apart from washu putting him on a few macines and the old "jura royal blood" excuse. Devlin420
Just recently picked up Tenchi OVA 3, and I'll tell you that it definitely picks up from the last OVA. It is just numbered differently since I guess it's a new show (just by adding ryo-ohki to the name). There's flashbacks galore in the beginning I guess to catch everyone else up to speed. Only thing I didn't like about it is there were no previews to the next episode. I've been waiting years for them to wrap up this particular tenchi-verse. Does anyone know when the next DVD is coming out? I actually can't wait to spend $30 on 3 episodes again :animesmil

Devlin420
Not really. Although the guy seen at the end of ep. 13 is somewhat important. Not too much screentime. I just read that 3 new episodes are going to come out in the fall so forget the last question of my post. Oh, and Ryoko is played by some other lady something Marshall. That's the only non-returning voice actor from the original cast.

So you say that D3 is somewhat Important? would you care to shed a little light on this? As we never really found out much about D3, apart from the fact that he disliked Dr. clay. Dagger
Tenchi in Tokyo isn't really a continuation of the Tenchi Muyo OVA. It's an AU (alternate universe) series, as is Tenchi Universe. Same characters, different scenario. Of the AU TV shows, Tenchi Universe is more highly regarded among fans than Tenchi in Tokyo. Also, two of the three Tenchi movies--Tenchi Muyo in Love and Tenchi Forever--belong to the Universe continuity. Sakuya is only a character in Tenchi in Tokyo, so she's not a real contender. ~Dagger~
Kenshin DX
I hated Tenchi in Tokyo nothing happened in that show. The ending was pretty good but that was it. Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe however were great. I loved the chacters and the love triangle between Tenchi , Ayaka, and Ryoko(sp?). I miss that show in fact I miss the old Toonami. Id watch Tenchi everyday.

shinji172
Then Tenchi Universe is better then tenchi in Tokyo and will tenchi decide there wich of those girls he want to choose i want to know it or mabye in the movie.
Not quite. Whilst there are hints about his preference, it is never outright stated. As for which is better, it depends on personal preference. For example, Tenchi in Tokyo not only changed the art style, it also made changes in some of the character personalities. Add to that the addition of a new love interest and more comedy based episodes (with little plot) and you can be certain that there is going to be dissagreement among fans. The universe series gave the characters new origins, but kept the personalities (mostly) the same. However, many fans Believe that the origional OVA's were better. The movies have a mixed responce. Whilst Tenchi muyo in love and the daughter of darknesswere very similar to the OVA's/TV series, tenchi Forever focuses on the theme of love, removing most of the comedy with focus given to the main love triangle. Because of this, some fans gave it nothing but scorn. However, many fans (myselph included) believed that it was a huge step forward due to its increased detail on the romance aspect. Its also probably the closest one to have tenchi drop hints on his favourate girl. Having said all that, i still think that you should give them all a try at least. After all, each fan has their own preferences, and all the series hve their own charm to them.
Dagger
...Its also probably the closest one to have tenchi drop hints on his favourate girl.
And for the record, what Tenchi Forever hints at is that he prefers
Ryoko.
I have mixed feelings about Tenchi Forever. I love its more mature art style and how
Ryoko & Ayeka end up cooperating.
However, that plot development serves mainly to rub in the fact that the relationship between Ryoko and Ayeka is really much more complex & interesting than their respective relationships with Tenchi. ~Dagger~
IceRose
I love Tenchi no doubt about it, the only one I haven't seen has been the one with his less fortunate cousin Seina, poor guy I have pity on him. I have also seen Pretty Sammy which is the one about Sasamy being a girl hero. Anyways my favortie character is Washu abd I wish they had gotten deeper inside her plot like What Miosi really her daughter? or what happenned to her husband? Endymion
Tenchi Muyo! was a great series. I also enjoyed Tenchi Universe as well, almost just as much. Tenchi in Tokyo fell far below my expectations of the series. The art changed and the plot was less than thin. Of the three movies, I believe the first was the best, followed by the third. The second was alright(better than Tenchi in Tokyo by far), but not as good as the other two series or movies. I'm not sure why everyone loves Ryoko though. I would much prefer to see Tenchi with Ayeka. Once upon a time I was a member of the AFC(Ayeka Fan Club). The pair of Tenchi-based fics I've written were more geared towards a Tenchi-Ayeka ending, but if I remember correctly, one had a happy ending for both girls. Silly time...degrader of memories.

Wolf2gto
I love the show. And i think that my favorite char would have to be ryoko, because she has such a strait forword aditude. one flaw with the series in my opinion is i think they took the series to far. after the original Tenchi Muyo! they created like 4 other sub series. TheResplendent
Hm, all this time i wasen't aware of this thread here. Tenchi def has a special place in my heart, it is great for comedy and always puts a smile on my face. It's just one of those animes that i'm can always be in the mood to watch. My friend whom i tried to get into anime lately has gotten very interested in Tenchi (as well as Naruto, these would be her 2 current favorites) and while watching the box sets with her they also began to captivate some of my other friends. This shows how much tenchi can appeal to people with just bits and pieces of the series. There are loveable characters (i personally like Ryoko, Kiyone, and Washuu), and the music can get quite catchy.
BlackTigerGurl
I've seen all the Tenchi Series. There replayed it a lot in the USA but after they took it off the air. I was greatly upset because I had grown to love the show. The fact that a guy living in a house with 6 (correct me if I'm wrong) females all that have some sort of emotions for him really made me laugh until my pants were soaked. (Not really.) I thought the plot was good on how they all made it to his home. I'm upset that I haven't seen the movie though. Considering I don't have any money and can't get the box set, I won't be able to see any more of Tenchi and the group. :animecry:

It was definitly the best of the 3, though all of them are quite good.
