r2vq
Manga is to Comics, as Anime is to cartoon. Hentai is to Anime, as Pornography is to Live Action. Pretty much, Manga is the comic book medium in Japanese culture. Many periodicals release chapters to a longer story, while many comics exist as stand-alone "one shot" short stories. Althoughh there is no singular style that defines Manga, many people attribute the BESM (Big Eyes Small Mouth) to Manga, as well as Anime. Many people also closely associate Manga and Anime because many Manga series become Anime, and vice versa. Hentai or H-Anime or H-Manga can refer to Pornographic Manga or Anime respectively. It comes from the Japanese words for "Strange Appearance" Unfortunately, since the introduction of Manga to the West, many people confuse the two. You can find more information on it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hentai -Arvi

thezerosystem
Hmm. If you aren't the sort to watch Hentai here are some other words you may want to remember to avoid. Shonen ai (or shonenai) Shojo ai (or shojoai) Yaoi (sometimes called slash) Unfortunately, people opinions on exactly what qualifies as the above differs. I almost missed out on a wonderful manga because I kept reading that it was shonen ai/yaoi/slash, and I'm really not into that. On the other hand, someone else swore to me that I would love this other anime-and I was a wee bit on the horrified end of the scale. My advice to you would me to trust official web sites only, internet rumors spread like the plague and are about as accurate as Mousse without his glasses. Speaking of internet rumors.... Oh no, i really shouldn't. I'm in the wrong section anyway.... ;)

And which series would that be? ;) And that seems like a bit of a blow for shounen/shojo-ai by categorizing them with Yaoi and Hentai. I'm not going to watch Yaoi because a lot of the time, it's too much for me. dunno, not so much of a complaint here. XD it's just that you listed shounen/shoujo-ai as if they were perverted like hentai. Dagger
The thing is, though, no matter how many people insist on identifying yaoi solely with pornographic material, there will always be others who do the opposite. For example, DMP publishes all of their boys' love manga--including series that contain almost nothing more explicit than wistful glances!--as "yaoi." In my opinion, it's simpler (not to mention more accurate) to concede that sexually explicit anime/manga can and do fall under the umbrella of yaoi/shounen-ai (or yuri/shoujo-ai). Or, better yet, BL, which really does cover everything in terms of male/male stuff. I've seen "girls' love" used as well, but I'm not sure if it's as widely accepted. ~Dagger~

I don't personally care for it, but then I'm not much of a romance fan at all. I just thought I'd mention it because a friend of mine went surfing one day and then grouched at me for not explaining the 'code' to her. :p It would have been funny except she was so mortified (I think she ran into something with a heavier rating). The series I almost missed was Pet Shop of Horrors. Some would class it as Shonenai, but I have never been able to quite grasp where they are getting that. It's weird , but it isn't a romance. Mousse: The blind guy from Ranma1/2 (which may or may not be hentai depending on your point of view-but is a masterpiece of anime none the less.)
