Nomura
So, I love the original Macross Saga of Robotech, but it's gotten even better. ADV has remastered the whole series and now it's new name is Macross. Macross 's vocals are better, but the art is basically the same. The story is a little less...80ish. I have the original M saga on DVD, so it would be a waste of money to get the new Macross series, but I would like to see this show on TV.
Panda
I just want to enter into this discussion to mention that Robotech and Macross are two different series. Super Dimentional Fortress Macross is the original. This is the one that ADV has recently added an English language dub. This series has spawned several more series to continue the Macross story line. These include Macross 7 and Zero. "Do You Remember Love" is also a part of this family of stories. Robotech is a mix of three separate series into one new story line. The original Macross, Southern Cross and MOSPEADA were combined to make each of the three sagas of the Robotech mythos. The Macross Saga of Robotech is not related to the original SDF Macross. Robotech is going to continue the story in the Shadow Chronicles which should be released later this year. If you want to know more about each of the series it is best to check out theOtaku.com's hubs for Macross and Robotech. I am a fan of both series but have a special place in my heart for Robotech since back in the day...way back in the 80's...Robotech was the first anime that was aired on US television that had a more mature theme. Cartoons were always aimed to and for kids. Robotech covered issues like interracial relationships, war, love and even killed off main characters! This was something that was never shown on tv before in an animated show for kids. It was groundbreaking. Robotech really did open the door for the acceptance of anime in the United States. Nomura
Yes it certainly did. I liked how the whole thing was from the 80s and yet, it was better than some of the animes we have now. I'm still a little confused about the Macross series(original), since it focuses around Love, and singing. :animeswea but, it's still pretty good. I want to see the whole series, From Macross to the Next Generation and so on, and I've even picked up the game. I wonder, will people grow to Hikaru and the others from the remastered Macross, or will they still love the original Macross Saga the same? I havn't replaced Rick with Hikaru, but it's tempting alright. I've noticed that Hikaru is the same name as Lovers Again's main character.
Qukey
I would certainly treat Rick Hunter and Hikaru Ichijyo quite different. Rick is properly only known in a small part of the world. On the other hand, anime fans have been following Hikaru's story for the last 24 years, since the release of Macross in 1982. Next generation is a part of Robotech, not Macross and it has nothing to do with the original Macross story. The only other full length TV series of Macross is Macross 7 (1994) and Hikaru, Mimei and Misa are not in the story. Max and Millia are and their daughter is the main character. ManjoumeThunder
Sorry ahead of time for bringing this topic up from the second page. But I'm a big macross and also robotech fanatic. So I couldn't help putting in my two cents into this topic. It's rare to actually come across any people who know of Macross outside of the "Macross Saga" of Robotech. Umm for starters most people usually found out about Macross via Robotech which aired in 1983 in most places it was airing around that time period. I'm one of the few fortunate people that actually saw Super Dimensional Fortress Macross before it's basic animation would be taken to create the first generation in Robotech known as the Macross saga. More ironically Macross was my first anime and still remains my favorite of all time. It had this perfect balance of drama, action, romance that just wasn't found in animation at the time. Then to further help the genre somewhat it was licensed by Harmony Gold and squashed together with two other series to make Robotech. Luckily Robotech for the most part kept true to "Macross" in that story arc. However I can't help but feel bitter for the great injustice it did to Super Dimensional Calvary Southern Cross (second generation), and Genesis Climber Mospeda (New Generation). As far as favorite characters are concerned I have to break this into two groups: Super Dimensional Fortess Macross: Misa Hayase: What more can I say, she had the brains and the beauty. Even in her most harshest mannerisms of trying to have a cold exterior for taking her job too seriously she had a sense of vunerabilty. On top of that her story by far was the most intriguing out of everyone. Hikaru Ichijyo: Well for starters he's the main character of the show. I suppose all males at some point in their lives can relate to being in a love triangle and going after a girl they know will just do you harm. I love his character because he feels just so human and relateable. Robotech: Lisa: Look above at Misa Max: His character was more devolped in the Robotech version. In the japanese version he didn't have too much of a backstory he was often soft spoken and really wasn't so noticeable. Then it all changed, and he became very likeable. As for the character I disliked the most.....well that honor goes to Lynn Minmei whether you hated her in english or japanese it was all the same. A spoiled selfish teenager that played on guys emotions.....she's just one of those characters you love to hate... How she became earth's greatest defense.....still irks me to this day. Anyway moving on, for the Robotech fans there's a new spinoff movie coming out soon. Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles it should tie in all the loose ends that episode 85 caused. In which Scott Benard left earth to find Admiral Rick Hunter, when it comes out is still unknown. I'll buy it just to complete the Robotech collection and also I'm intrigued how harmony gold is going to fix the continuity problem that has plagued robotech for many years now. LazLong
I started getting into anime back in the early 80s with shows like Robotech and Starblazers. I was and still am a huge Robotech and Macross fan. I've had the Robotech series on VHS (does anyone here know what that is ?) for forever and just recently gave up on them :) I bought the Protoculture collection of remastered DVDs and have been watching them since I got it. I am not ashamed to admit I was obsessed with the show back then and still am a little :) I've gotten the Shadow Chronicles DVD and I think it's a decent series to follow on from the New Generation series. I really liked that characters from previous series made an appearance and that they've let the door open for future installments. One of these days Rick Hunter will make it back to earth :) I had a VHS version of the Macross movie in Japanese, with no subtitles or dubs. I recenlty bought a copy wth the English subtitles and I can finally figure out what those people were saying for all those years :) It's an awesome movie that you should see if you get the chance. Doublehex
I have been meaning to watch Macross for a while now, but after reading this thread, I have found out Macross is actually part of Robotech. I understand how Robotech pretty much combines 3 different but similar anime series into one. My question is, as a Macross/Robotech virgin, which should I watch first? Macross, or Robotech? LazLong
Hi Matt, I'm no expert, just a long time Robotech fan. I'm currently getting acces to the Macross DVDs and watching those. The Harmony Gold ROBOTECH series is in three parts: Macross, Robotech Masters and the Next Generation. At least make sure you watch these in this order. Looking back at these, even the remastered DVDs, you'll probably find sharper and more detailed anime arounf but back in the day this was cutting edge (at least for me). The new Shadow Chronicles DVD that came out recently fits in after the Next Generation and for the most part I was pretty happy with the results. They've definitelyleft the door open for subsequent releases and I think they've got another movie length episode in the works. I also have the Macross movie (Do you Remember Love ...) and this is simply amazing. I think the story makes better sense in this version and the anime art is first class. I've seen a few other Macros spin offs over time and I guess I'll just need to watch them all in order to get the full sense of them. Anyway ... I don't think you'll be disappointed if you start watching the Robotech or the Macross series. Laz
Doublehex
So, it won't matter which one I go with then? Might as well start with the shorter one - Macross - first. Thanks for the advice, Long.

Looks like Toby Maguire may have th Rick Hunter role. I they could do a trilogy for the Robotech saga that would be awesome. Who do you think would be good actors/actresses to play the lead roles for the Mcross saga ? I'll be collecting more links on the site below ... click to see more .. Laz Saw this link on the Robotech boards and it kind of answered the question I had asked in my previous reply (so I'm replying to myself) :).
