Here's a thread where people can show/tell what is their favorite musical is and why. I have a couple but I wanted to know what everyone else liked as well, here are mne and why I like them:

Chicago: This one is my absolute favorite because its not that simple as other musicals, its back in the 20's and it has an interesting pplot with great actors (I'm speaking about eh new version on DVD). I liked the songs and what they had to work with as well

RENT: This has to be my second favorite because I didn't like some of the characters on there, but the songs were amazing and really awsome to listen and sing along to.

West Side Story- A classic musical with a sad ending, the songs were nice to listen to and I liked that it had a point to the story....that gangs are bad, lol.

You've got great taste in musicals. ^^

Here are my favorites;

Phantom of the Opera: i know that it's not really a musical it's an opereta but i still love the songs. And above all else i love the story.

My Fair Lady: Again love the songs, great characters and great story.

Ah! Broadway on the OB? When did this happen? Heh.

So anyways, as for favorite musicals-

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels- If you haven't heard of it, it's a fabulous musical about a couple (or shall I say a trio? ;) ) of con artists who have their "base" (I guess would be the word) at a resort on the French Rivierra. A whole lot of calamity goes down with a few sarcastic jokes and some fantastic songs and dances. Norbert Leo Butz, John Lithgow, and Sherie Rene Scott were AMAZING! Not to mention, the Imperial Theater is gorgeous.

Miss Saigon- Probably one of the lesser known musicals of current, but I love it anyways. It's about a soldier who falls in love with a Vietnamese girl during the Vietnam war. Well that's putting it simply. The songs are beautiful and I definately cried for alot of the end part of the show.

And of course I love (the already mentioned) RENT! DVD came out today. And I can't wait till I get a chance to see it on Broadway. I don't like Rosario Dawson as Mimi (in the movie), but that's just my opinion.

The Phantom of the Opera is hands down my favorite. It's soundtrack is phenominal, it's a great story... just spectacular. I loved the movie.

Next would definately be Chicago. I loved the songs, and the whole movie was done so well.

One day I want to go to New York and see both of those productions.

The Scarlet Pimpernel is my favorite musical of all time... no contest. I saw it twice when it was at the Kennedy Center, and if it came back in town, I would see it again in a heartbeat. I love the songs, the comedy and the whole atmosphere--it's just so much fun and so stirring.

Second would be Into the Woods. Two of my best-loved anime series deal with Western fairy tale archetypes and so forth, so how could I not fall head over heels for this? The songs aren't really the kind of thing you can walk around humming (although I've been known to bellow the "AGONY~~!!!" chorus in the shower from time to time), but the lyrics are clever and the soundtrack is very listenable. I like how it's both bittersweet and uplifting.

As far as other Sondheim stuff goes, I'm also fond of Sweeny Todd.

I thought Showboat and Ragtime were absolutely brilliant, but they were a little too intense for me (well, more so Ragtime than the former). Going to Ragtime was emotionally draining, and while it was a worthy experience, I'm not sure I could have done it twice.

I have to echo those who mentioned Chicago, since it's awesome.

Sadly, I didn't like Wicked very much. Perhaps my expectations for it were too high. :animedepr

Moulin Rouge, definately. It's the only muscial I an watch over and over again without getting bored. I loved Chicago when I saw it in theatres, but when I was watching it a second time at a friend's house, I kept on drifting in and out of sleep because I was so incredibly bored.

And Grease, man! What a great movie to watch with friends. And sing to.

I like West Side Story and My Fair Lady as well, but not as much as the previous two. I'm so mainstream. :]

And don't kill me, but for some reason I couldn't even get through Phantom of the Opera. *yawn*

The Scarlet Pimpernel.

I doubt many people have heard of this opera, and I think it was kind of a flop on broadway, but it is still my favorite in every catagory. Romance, Adventure, Humor, Suspense, Tragedy....About the only thing I wouldn't label it is a mystery, because you as the audiance know the hero's secret.

Percival Blakeney is an exceedingly rich, disgustingly shallow fop living in england during the time of the French Revolution. Somehow, the fool managed to marry the most beautiful, talanted actress in France. The day of thier wedding however, Percy learns that Margurete signed the denunciation of a close friend of his and thus he and his entire family were sent to the guillotine. And here is where the whole mess starts.

Margurete, (who, for someone of her wit seems to me rather gullible) doesn't know anything about the matter. She was promised that the man and his family would be set free, and was just as horrified as everyone else when they were executed instead.

But Percy, who is too stricken by the news to think clearly, doesn't think to ask his wife what really happened. He decides that he is going to rescue as many people from the Guilotine as he can, donning the alias of "The Scarlet Pimpernel". (which is a flower and part of his family crest)

Meanwhile Margurete, who is already upset enough about her husbands sudden bitterness and coldness to her, finds out the new French government (or rather, her ex lover Chauvlin) has kidnapped her brother and wants her to find out the identity of the Scarlet Pimpernel or they will kill him.

You can see how this puts her in a bit of a spot.

Anyway, I can't really say more without giving away the plot. But everything about this musical was jaw droppingly good. Despite the sadness of the plot, or perhaps enhanced by it, Percy's antics as a goofball are hilarious, the music is beautiful, and the lyrics to the scenes are amazing!

I guess the lyrics kinda spoil the plot a bit...but I'm posting a link anyway. I can't even decide which song is my favorite.
I can't even decide which song is my favorite.
I couldn't choose just one, but the pieces I find myself listening to most often are Madame Guillotine, Into the Fire, Falcon in the Dive, Where's the Girl?, The Riddle and Storybook.

That's a lot, actually. But The Scarlet Pimpernel's music is just that good. It runs the whole gamut, too--there are seductive songs, songs that can get your blood going like nothing else, humorous songs, etc.

It's great to encounter another fan here, at any rate. :animesmil

My brother and sister love this musical, and they got me to watch it about a month ago. I liked it a lot; I think I might watch it again soon. (Thanks for getting the "AGONY!1!11!111!" chorus stuck in my head, btw plz die k thx)

I'm not too into musicals, but there are some others I enjoy. The Blues Brothers is my favorite. It's got everything: A killer soundtrack, hilarious comedy, great action sequences and car chases, a bajillion awesome cameos, a bonafide mission from God, and Carrie Fisher trying to kill John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. What's not to love? :)

I'm also fond of The Wizard of Oz (of course :p) and Jesus Christ Superstar.

I heard a song from the soundtrack of The Scarlet Pimpernel on Broadway's Best (Sirius Sattelite Radio channel) and thought it sounded pretty good. I absolutely loved the book and I'm glad to know that the musical does it justice. :)

I've only ever seen one musical in my life (a real production) and that was 'Dirty Dancing'. It was very good, having never seen the movie before. The guy who played the main character was HOT!

Lol.

But my favourite would have to be the musical we did in high-school. It was a comdey about one of the Henry's of England. The one that had a heap of wives. It was written by two Brisbane guys and it is absolutely hilarious.

What made it even more hilarious were the mistakes made by the cast and crew. For example, I was on the mic-board while one of my friends was doing the sound effects. There was this one scene where the German King (who is addicted to golf) swings and is supposed to smash a glass window. Instead of the smashing-window sound effect, my friend did the cow-mooing-getting-hit sound effect. It was funny because the actor who was the German King was a completely random improvised joke about it.

My favorites are

The Sound Of Music: I love the songs and the story. Being based on thruth as well makes it even better. I've always loved this movie. My favorite part is when they do the Marrionet Show! I use to rewind it and waych it over and over when I was little.

The Wizard Of Oz: It's fun.full of magic and imagination. The songs are great and Judy Garland is awesome!

Seven Brides For Seven Brothers: This movie is rather silly. But it's fun. The songs are good and in the end everything works out. My favorite when I was lillte.

Grease: THis movie is just awesome. The songs are good and catchy. It's just fun to watch and sing along with the songs.

Yay, musicals! Dagger, I am so excited to have found another fan of Into the Woods. It was my birth into the world of acting, and remains one of my favorite musicals of all time. I first saw it when I was in seventh grade, and now I could recite...maybe the whole first act from memory. : D; I played Cinderella's stepmother in a production with my middle school last summer, though I really REALLY wanted to be Cinderella. Ah well, it was the best thing I had ever done (expensive, though).

Wicked is another of my all-time favorites. It was the first broadway show I saw live, back in February, and I can't wait till it comes back. I ADORE the music, and Wizard of Oz has always been a favorite of mine. One of my dreams is to be either Elphaba or Glinda in a production someday.

Finally, I like Annie a lot. At least the version with Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, Bernadette Peters, Aileen Quinn, and Albert Finney. My old middle school is putting this show on this summer, and I'm hoping to be Miss Hannigan. I adore that roll. =D

I really want to be on Broadway when I graduate college. I also liked Rent (the movie), Phantom of the Opera (the movie), and The Newsies. Whooee.

Add My Fair Lady to my list. I just watched the movie today and I loved it. The songs are all great, I liked the story, and it was actually much funnier than I was expecting it to be. And of course there's Audrey Hepburn. <3

Well I must agree with alot of the shows that have been mentioned above, but my all time favories would have to be Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Rent, and Chicago .
Well you want me to tell you why I like these shows. Well here you go. Les Miserables, first off this is an excellent show, and I love the music. I enjoyed seeing that when it came to Omaha. Phantom of the Opera, that was an incredible show to see on stage when I was in New York City a few years back. It has a great plot and has wonderful music. I must say though that if you get a chance to see either one of these shows on stage go and see them.
Rent and Chicago I loved the music.
It is always fun to hear what other shows people like or have seen.

I can't believe I forgot all about Grease.
That was seriously one of the greatest musicals ever. Oh John Travolta, how did you hit those notes?
The songs are fun to sing to as well, they are currently being played at work, amongst lots of other songs, but I swear whenever it comes on, nearly everyone in the store will be singing or humming along.

Another musical that may not be mentioned is "South Park: Bigger Longer, Uncut"...
That counts as a musical right? There's lots of singing... and sooo funny. Of course, I can't really sing any of the songs because all we'd see are asterisks. :animeblus

Another one that I totally forgot to mention is Nightmare Before Christmas!! Definately a classic for me. One of Tim Burton's finest.

*Sings* This is Halloween, this is halloween, HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN... in this town, we call home, everyone hail to the pumpkin song!

And no one mentioned Crazy For You? -pout-

From my years in drama, this has to be one of the best I worked on in all aspects. The set changing was a lot of fun. Anyways, even to this day I have the songs branded in my head. I really love this play more than the others I've seen.

Well, there is the Sound of Music, but I only saw the video, not the actual play on stage, so I will not count that. But, Sound of Music is awesome too.
