Has it ever been suggested that we should have a chat facility?

If not here's my two cents. I think that having some kind of chat room would be a good way for members to interact in real time and really get to know one another. Now I know that messengers are available etc, but I'm not the kind of person who likes to talk one on one and I think a chat room would be really interesting.

Of course, I don't know if you can implement it with the programmes you are using and whatnot, but I just thought I'd give it a shot.

I think people have various unofficial chatrooms set up on the Yahoo! networks and such ... perhaps rather than try and add plugins to the vB, we could set up an "Official" OtakuBoards Yahoo! Chat? Or perhaps a thread somewhere with links to all the unofficial ones, so those of us who don't personally know the person that set up the room can also get involved.

theOtaku.com actually did have a chat room for any number of years. I think Kitty was one of the moderators of the thing, bless her little heart. For a site that promotes quality and coherency so much I guess it made little sense to have that silly IRC. If you ever experienced that chat for yourself you would know exactly why it has been discontinued.

But don't worry, we still love you. :p

Personally, I just use AIM for all my chatting needs. Back a while, there used to be an AIM chat room going almost every night. And maybe there still are, and I'm just not being invited (:animecry:). . . . I always found those to be a lot of fun and a great way to get to know OB peoples better. Your contact list grows pretty fast when you're in a lot of chats like that, too.

My thoughts exactly, if we had a chat room we'd be as well off to just abandon half The Prefecture as it serves the same function as a chat room, well except in a chat room you can't really control the flow of conversation. And as Des said 99% of OtakuBoards members use AIM, so getting to know people via IM and our many mad chats is as good as having our own OB chat.

Chat is something we may do in the future, but we can really only do it if the quality can be controlled. I'm not referring so much to censorship, but more to raw moderation and features. Our old chatroom was based on IRC and I don't think the actual quality of IRC was good enough for what we wanted. But it also really ran away from us, because we had people appointing moderators out of nowhere and in the end the chatroom was basically out of our control. People were having bad experiences on there and that's not how it should be.

So, while we have no plans for a chatroom right now, I am not going to rule one out entirely in the future. It really depends on the technology and how interested the members are. For now though, obviously, OtakuBoards is all about discussing things with other people - best of all, the quality is higher than in a chatroom and there are many more options here.
