I have a question...well actually a few:

Can music tracks or songs be included in a post?

If so then what's the size limit?

If not then I guess I'm making a suggestion to make it possible. :animesmil

Thanks. :naughty:

Typically, we only limit music files being put into posts for the Adventure Inn and Square to help out on the aesthetic aspect of RPGs. Try to imagine what dial-up users would have through if we let users post music files in every single one of their posts. It'd be a bandwidth nightmare. That being said, the answer would be: In the Adventure areas, yes; everywhere else, no.

God in Heaven let's not even go there, I have enough trouble back home with just those RPGs and MyO sites that have their own MP3 tracks. Besides people can already used a variety of fonts and sizes, user titles and not to mention several million colours outside of those in the rainbow, I think we have enough personalisation as it is and individual music would simply be for personalisation.

Anywhere HTML is enabled (such as the Adventure Square), yes, you're able to embed midi/mp3 files into your posts. Though like images, they have to be relevant to the post. So you can't embed a song into your posts in, say, the Web Site Workshop just to have it there.

Anywhere HTML is disabled, well, it's disabled for a reason. That would be to prevent people from embeding who knows what in their posts. And one of the most apparent reasons for that is, as already mentioned, to make the site actually viewable by people on 56k connections. Not everyone can load a 3 MB mp3 in only a minute's time.

Or, if you mean uploading songs as attachments, like you can do with images and text files, I think it's pretty safe to say that'll never happen. In order to make the feature anything but worthless the attachment file size limit would have to be drastically increased. And that would mean hosting a lot more stuff on the server, as well as a lot more bandwidth--and money, because bandwidth ain't free--being expended in serving up those attachments. OB is a message board, not a file hosting service.

Cool, nice feedback... :animesmil
When I was asking about including music with a post, RPGs were kinda what I meant :animeswea, since the Adventure Square is the only place (I think) where the addition of the music element would take the RP-ing experience to kinda of a new level.

Relevancy of course is a must, otherwise there would be on point in doing it, and posting music in the first place, since the whole objective of it is to magnify the idea or thought intended in that certain part of the RP, and intensify it's feel in the entire story. :animeknow

So, you're saying that music can be embedded in an RP, my questions are: :animesmil

1-How many songs per RP are allowed?

2- Is there a size limit?

3-How does one do so in [/..] [ ] terms? or is there another way?

Thanks :animeswea

There really aren't any limits in terms of number and sizes of songs that you can embed into an RPG's thread. But out of common courtesy to people with slower connections, it's a good idea to keep your files from being too huge and to keep the number down.

As for how to embed a music file, that requires a bit of HTML, so you can't do it with vB tags. This is the code you'd use:

Obviously you'd put the URL of your sound file in place of the midi/mp3URL bit. The width and height attributes set the pixel dimensions of the player toolbar that will be displayed; 175x16 is what I usually use. It's also common courtesy to set autostart to false so that music doesn't start blaring out at people unexpectedly. Loop is pretty self explanatory, and the volume setting just determines what the volume will start out as; people can still change it through the player's little toolbar.

One thing to note is that you do not want to use the hidden="false" attribute in the embed tag. I've seen this mistake made a lot, and it just screws up the display of the player toolbar in some browsers. The default setting is for the toolbar to be displayed, so unless you're using hidden="true" (which you shouldn't be, because then people have no way to start/stop the music), there's no reason to include the hidden attribute.

Thank you very much for the info :animeswea , I really appreciate it. :animecry: :animesmil

Thanks

Edit: :animeknow
I have yet another question :animeswea :

If the audio file I intend to include in the post is available on my PC (i.e is available to me offline) how do I insert it's URL? :animeswea as I'm having a problem with this :animeangr, can I only include files available on the internet? or what?
a bit of help would be appreciated :animesmil

In order to insert a music file in a post it has to be uploaded somewhere on the internet. We don't allow the attachment of music files because they're too big, as mentioned in one of my earlier posts, and other people can't access things that are stored locally on your hard drive. So it's gotta be uploaded elsewhere.

Most free hosts don't allow the storage of mp3 files, though a lot don't have any problem with midis. So if you're looking to include mp3s you'll probably have to either pay for web space or leech off a friend. (The second option is a personal favorite of mine. :p)

I tried to use the URL of a song, in which I have in my e-mail inbox. I thought since it had a URL address, and is theoratically available online it might work. When I tried it the player bar wouldn't show, like when a picture is unavailable; y'know the empty gray space, and the little red cross at the corner. So I'd like to know if it didn't work because I did something wrong :animeswea , or was it because it wouldn't work in the first place :animestun

I'm pretty sure that you can't link to a file (which was probably an attachment, right?) that is part of an email. I've never tried it though so it's an interesting idea. What kind of email account is it (i.e. Hotmail, Yahoo, GMail, etc.)?
