Pointing out mistakes.

On several threads, I have noticed that the rule-enforcing people have pointed out the mistakes on the actual threads. Well, I think that they shouldn't point out the mistakes on the thread itself, but send a private message and/or email instead.

The reason we point out the thread-closing causes, or simple mistakes like: a title misspelling, and double posts, of a thread is so that other members can also see why the thread was closed, or what was changed, and therefore come to a better understanding of what kinds of threads are acceptable for discussion and which ones are not. Other members can than learn from other people's mistakes. You didn't mention the closing of a thread in your post, but I just thought I'd cover that just in case that was what you were talking about.

And if you don't mind me asking: Why do you feel we should do this?

If we didn't point out people's mistakes publicly when closing a thread it would only result in more people making mistakes because they wouldn't have examples of what not to do. Which would then lead to even more mistakes needing to be pointed out, even if it was only happening through PMs. So all this would do is decrease people's awareness of the rules while creating more work for the moderators--all in the name of saving a few people some slight embarrassment from having their mistakes explained publicly.

Now, if moderators pointed out people's mistakes, then laughed at them and called them names or something, you'd have a point. But we don't do that here--or if someone does, they're dealt with accordingly. So our intention is not to humiliate, but to educate. All moderators here are doing when they close a thread and explain why is pointing people towards the site rules as a reminder of how the site is run.

And if anyone actually gets mad or offended when a moderator corrects a mistake, I think they need to look into deflating their ego. No one is perfect.

I think you hit a nerve with Charles, I gess I should book a Grave plot under the name of Master of Death.

Joking aside; I don't really find it that bad for Mods to point out the mistakes. Sure it's annoying but it's nessecary so that other members that may make the same mistake are told about the cock up that the person did. I'm sure that most memberss (Excluding Charles, James and Adam) have benefited from not making the mistakes that others have.

Embarrasing, Yes. Nessecary, Very Yes.
Uhhh... you spelled 'embarrassing' and 'necessary' wrong. ^_^
I was going to send this in a PM but I couldn't resist posting it considering the thread.

It's that type of post that makes pointing out mistakes publicly a necessity. Your post there had no relevance to the topic at hand and can only accomplish one thing - creating a problem that did not need to be created, assuming the original poster is annoyed by that comment.

See? Now if this wasn't posted, the same thing may have happened again later on in the thread ;)

Just wondering, is it possible for a moderator to re-open a thread under the conditions that the thread starter agrees to fix the problem?
Yes, a moderator has the power re-open a locked thread, but if in a case where a thread has the potential to envoke some form of discussion, than a moderator will fix the problem(s) themselfs, give a warning, and the thread will continue. So, if a thread was closed it's because it was beyond simply fixing "the" problem. Also, it is not always a thread starters fault that a thread may be closed; it could be due to other members causing problems. A moderator will do everything in their power to ensure that a thread may continue if there is the potential- This of course would mean we'd have to point out mistakes ;-)

Just to add to this... oftentimes, when a mod closes a thread, he'll say something that amounts to, "Next time, try doing _____ to prevent future topics from being locked." If it's been closed after just a couple of posts, and the original poster so desires, he can recreate that exact same thread afterward. As long as he follows the moderator's suggestions, there shouldn't be anything barring the second version of the thread from staying open.

I don't think what you mentioned would be impossible or anything, Kioky. For the most part, though, it should be easier to create the thread again (with the appropriate changes).
