Underappreciated Anime Characters.

Well, I looked all over the place for a thread like this, and I was surprised that there wasn't one already! So I suppose I'll take the honor of making the first known thread like this.

Out of all the anime I have seen (or most of them), I always wind up liking the least-liked character! I'm certain you've had this problem before - you go into a forum of some kind to discuss your favorite anime, and when asked your favorite character, you proudly announce:

"My favorite character is ___________!!!"

And you get flamed for it by n00bs and homicidal fanboys/fangirls.

Anyway, this is a thread where you can discuss underappreciated characters from your favorite anime. But to keep this place from getting locked up, here's what you should put, with detail -

-Your favorite underappreciated character and what anime they're from (of course)
-Why do you think they're underappreciated?
-Why do you like them so much?
-What would you do if the character suddenly became popular overnight? Would you still like them, or do you think the popularity would cause them be be overrated?

You don't have to put reasons for ALL of those categories, but it'd be nice. ^^;

And please, for the sake of the thread, and my and others' sanity, do not flame those who like a character you don't like, and don't fangirl around in here, please. o_o;

Anyway, on with my list of characters.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Rose Thomas
I think she's underappreciated for her seemingly minor role (untl near the end of the anime, of course), and the legions of Ed fangirls as well, for when
She and Ed are dancing in the city beneath Central, she tells him "I love you."
But from my encounters, they seem to fail to realize that
she was under mind controll, thanks to Dante
, and she was half out of her mind. Not to mention she was
raped
. Give the girl a break! Oi. If she suddenly became popular, I'd be happy. Very happy. I also like her because she's kind, and is able to live on with life, despite what's happened to her.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Winry Rockbell
I'll be the first to say I find her a LOT more tolerable in the manga, but since this is in anime discussion, I'll stick to the anime variation. I like her for her dedication to the Elric's. She'd lay her life down for them! I also find it funny when she goes on her automail spazzes. XD She needs to stop wailing on Edward's head so much with that wrench, though. o_O She's gonna give the poor boy irreversible brain damage. XD As with Rose, I think she's underappreciated because of the legions of Ed fangirls. That's not to say ALL Ed fangirls hate both her and Rose, but whereever I go, it's "WINRY MUST DIE LOLZ" or words to that effect. e_e;

Fullmetal Alchemist - Hohenheim of Light
Those who know me are probably sick of hearing about him, at least from me. So I'm gonna do a shameless plug and direct you *here* for my reasonings. Too long to put here. P=

Naruto - Uchiha Sasuke
The Naruto community is rather evenly divided on Sasu here. It's either you love the guy and feel sorry for him, or hate his freaking guts. I fall into the "I love him and feel sorry for him" category. I really do feel sorry for him! Why, I won't go into here, for most people most likely know what's happened to him. I think he's underappreciated by most because of his attitude. Granted, he has a stinky attitude, but without it, he wouldn't be Sasuke! And that, my friends, would be dull.
((And many of my friends, whom I doubt any of you know, hate Sasuke. And it annoys me to no end. Yes you're free to have your own opinion, but...))

Naruto - Haruno Sakura
Why do I like her? I think she kicks butt. Alot of butt. XD I also find her "Inner Sakura" very amusing, for I can be that way myself. But why do I think she's underappreciated? Many people seem to think she's annoying. I don't find her annoying at all! Plus, every anime has to have one of those annoying characters! It just wouldn't be complete without her. XD I also like her hair...BEFORE she cut it. *cough* >_>

Yeah, that's all I have for now. XD When I find the time to find more characters in need of lovin', I'll add them here.

Naruto - Uchiha Sasuke

I like Sasuke too much. I won't even talk about it because it scares people. Though, I have something to add on Sangome's point; most people seem to hate Sasuke mainly because
he betrayed the village
, not just because he's a jerk. It came as no surprise to me when it happened, so whatever.

Other than that, I can't think of anything. Honestly, I tend to favor popular characters. Heck, even Sasuke is popular in some circles.

Oh, and I highly suggest every Sakura fan read this.

EDIT: OH, and I like Itsuki from Haruhi Suzumiya, who no one ever seems to talk about. I don't hang around the fandom, so I don't know whether or not he's truly under-appreciated, but still. He's cool. He likes to breathe on Kyon's face. But he seems to be ignored in favor of Haruhi or any of the other freaks in the SOS Brigade.

Hm, lets see what i can remember off the top of my head:

Naruto:

Temari - Shes one of the most underappreciated characters in the series I think, she happens to be one of my top 4 favorite of the younger shinobi. She is an extremely focused ninja and is a thinker as well. While not as smart as shikamaru she has the capability to plan her own movements and last in a long term battle or end it shortly. She controls her own pace easily, and it's only helped with her versatile techniques which serve as strong defensive and offensive methods involving her wind jutsus. It's as Shikamaru describes in the
rescue sasuke arc when Temari aids him against Tayuya.
She seems to be underappreciated because of several reasons that i find, 1) Gaara outshines her as the strong sand ninja, and she becomes shoved in the back. 2) Shes a female shinobi. 3) Her air time is tiny compared to the majority of other ninjas featured in the series, namely the konoha ninjas. A lot of people tend to not pay much attention to her because she dosen't really have a defining fight (say like Lee vs Gaara or Neji vs Naruto) or plays as important a role as many others.

If she became more popular, i would be happy that people are realizing how versatile and unique she is. She would still most definitly be one of my favorites.

Trigun:

Chapel the Evergreen - In my eyes in only the few episodes he was shown he has the most personality and character. He was the only one of the gung-ho guns who ever questioned anything and showed compassion and individuality. The others followed Legato and Knives without question and were like drones.
Chapel refused to kill Wolfwood and detested being used as a tool. After being forced to shoot Wolfwood thanks to Legato he actually confronts him and Knives at the cost of his own life.
He's underappreciated simply because hes a gung-ho gun...while they're responsibilities as a cohesive unit were important to the series, invidually only few of them have gained a decent sized fanbase (those being Dominique the Cyclops, Midvalley the Hornfreak who also happens to be a favorite of mine, and Zazi the Beast). To me Chapel's character should be appreciated more not only for his standing out of the group, but his kick *** double cross gun too.

I'm sure theres more, i'll edit and add em in as i begin to remember.

I mainly put the jerk bit there, because my afformentioned friends hate him because of that, so I kind of retaliated against them there in that bit, but they'll probably never see it. ((I suck as a friend))

And the blurb about
Sasuke being a traitor
doesn't surprise me either. I knew it happened, but then again, I need to get off my arse and see/watch more of Naruto. ><

I really can't think of any plausible reason why someone would hate Winry that much. She's one of my favorite female characters from anime. Sort of OT, but yaoi/shounen-ai fangirls who demonize every female character irritate me incredibly. It's sort of ridiculous and pathetic sometimes.

Oh god, so true! I never really liked Sasuke and I've often made jabs at him while talking about the latest manga chapter or anime episode, but I really don't hate him. He's just easy for me to make fun of, what with all the emo and duckbutt jokes flying around. For anyone reading this who hates Sasuke... uh, his brother massacred his entire family. That should be enough.

Naruto and Sasuke are, to an extent, two sides of the same coin. They chose to react to their surroundings in different ways, but their problems have similar roots. Personally I like Naruto better, but I don't hate Sasuke. Even though he can still irritate me.

Actually I think a lot of the Naruto fandom have taken a liking to Sakura recently after the time jump.

Before the time jump she was still progressing from the brat she was from the very beginning. Her being a superficial brat in the beginning is just true; I don't think anyone can argue with that. Not even Kishimoto, because if he didn't intend to make readers think that, he failed. But after Sasuke basically gives her a mental ***** slap and during the Wave Country arc, we see progress.

Her hidden turmoils of being largely left out in Team 7 and her (mentally) self-proclaimed "inferior" skills as a ninja was never really taken in well by most of the fandom pre-time jump because most of the fans already dismissed her as a generic annoying female character. ...Which she lived up to from time to time.

The time jump just provided fans with a huge development in character, so she's very likable. I don't think the Sakura hating is still that alive today.

A note on the hair: so much better-looking short! :3 *disregards all symbolic meaning*

I need to start off by saying BKstyles you totally rock for listing Chapel the Evergreen. I agree with what you have already said Chapel is the best of the Gung Ho Guns. In my opinion the one that makes the biggest change in the lives of Vash and the girls. After all he is the one who
kills Wolfwood.
Even though he was only in 2 episodes he is very important to the story. I guess I should also mention that I'm a bit biased since the English language voice actor is a close friend of mine.

For old school fans I would have to mention Minmei/Minmay from Robotech/SDF Macross . People hate her with a passion. I understand why since she can be a whiny brat and is in the middle of the love triangle. Being a Lisa/Misa fan I understand this 100%. But when you step back and think of the role she plays in the series she is absolutely essential for the outcome of the war. Without her singing there would
be nothing that could disarm the Zentraedi forces and lead to the Earth's victory in Force of Arms.
Love her, hate her, without her there wouldn't be much of a story.

Tatewaki Kuno from Ranma 1/2. Yes he is full of himself and a spoiled rich kid, but he is so much fun! Kuno is the only one who could be so oblivious to realize that the
Pig-tailed Girl and Ranma
are one in the same. His reactions to events are priceless. Also, there wouldn't be anyone that Nabiki could totally take financial advantage of if he wasn't there to buy into all of her schemes. Oh, and I am a part of the NabikixKuno camp. They really do belong together. She loves money, he has money. It's a perfect match!

Nova, Claude and Rinrin from Bleach: People hate the filler arc but I really like these characters. I'm not sure how many people have told me at anime conventions they love my Claude purse but hate the filler episodes. Meh. They are fun to watch interact with the main characters. Nova and Chad are cut from the same "quiet-type" fabric. The boisterous Rinrin and Ichigo are probably the only ones who could put up with each other and Orihime and Claude...that purse....so ugly it's cute. Their skills in the
battles against the Bount are helpful and it's great that Kon has other plushies
to play off of.

Now if this discussion were to include manga only characters *cough*Mei Chan from FMA*cough* my list would be much larger. But that discussion is best for another thread in a different forum. For now this is my list. If I think of more I'll edit my post.

I really like Leon, Yuri and May from Kaleido Star. Yuri undergoes more changes than (and arguably more character development) than anyone else in the show--he's practically a plot twist machine. And at the beginning of the series, he's only 18! WTF, right? But seriously, he's a cool character who
ends up playing a pivotal role in both seasons.

Major season 2 spoilers -->
His stunning swordfight with Leon is one of my favorite scenes in K*. That whole episode is remarkable for how it flips the characters around--Leon becomes the injured, pure-hearted innocent, and Yuri the manipulative bastard (but still, a very different kind of manipulative bastard from the guy we knew in the first season). And yet the sequence ends by showing Yuri's good side.
It's great & very high-intensity stuff in a series whose primary focus is always the female characters.

I'm fond of Leon
because of how the story about his past came out as well as the aforementioned parts with Yuri. He also gets major points for apologizing to Sora for what he said about Layla early on in season 2.
It's always nice to hear a Takahiro Sakurai-voiced
softie.
I also don't see how anyone could continue to dislike him after his
clown scenes
in Rosetta's OVA. :animesmil

May is adorable. Obviously there were plenty of times when I had problems with her behavior, but between her shouted manuver names and her habit of breaking out into wild barking, I just couldn't hate her. I actually wish that
she had more of a role toward the end of season 2; I wanted to see her move toward becoming Sora's partner (or one of them, anyway... that girl is such a two-timer, haha).
If you try to think of May as a tsundere, her actions start to make a lot more sense.

Every time I mention him I get the usual flood of how he?s so useless and whiney and that the show would be better without him. :animesigh For me it?s the other way around, if Shippo wasn?t in the show I probably wouldn?t watch it.

Anyway I think he?s underappreciated since he adds a good counter to the usual supposedly competent character who can usually take care of themselves. The complaints about him being useless are undeserved as he is a child and it?s rather unrealistic to expect a child to be useful when fighting demons or anything else for that matter.

I also think he serves as a reminder to the rest of the group as to what has happened as many people have lost their families and loved ones to demon attacks. And please, lets not get off on the tangent of Sango has suffered more, that really grates on my nerves since it?s not a contest of which character has ?lost or suffered? more.

I guess I like him because I love watching him and InuYasha argue and fight like siblings. It kind of reminds me of how my older brother teases me when he comes home for a visit. The other reason, I just think he?s cute with his little tail and the funny magic tricks he can do.

If he were to suddenly become popular, which he might be though I?ve yet to run into very many Shippo fans, well I don?t think it would change my opinion. I might see some over rated opinions as to why he would be popular, but that?s about it.

WHY, HELLO THAR. I love that last one, and I'm not even an Itsuki/Kyon fan. XD
I really like Leon, Yuri and May from Kaleido Star[/b'].
Other people don't like them? But they're so pretty. D:

In all seriousness, I could see why others wouldn't like those three during their nastier moments,
but they all were portrayed sympathetically in the end. (And their development from EVIL!!1 to sympathetic wasn't rushed or tacked on the way it is in some other anime.)
Then again, I tend to have a thing for
redeemable
a-holes (or even irredeemable ones, come to think of it), so it might just be me. ;)

As for May, I think she made a great foil for Sora. Honestly, there were many times during the second season that I wanted to shake Sora and yell at her for being so darn modest all the time, so it was nice to see someone like May running around constantly mouthing off. (And no matter how much someone dislikes Leon and May, they have to admit that without those two, Sora would never have developed as much as she did during the second season, since everyone else in a
Layla-less
Kaleido Stage would have babied her too much.)

And personally, I really liked when Leon acted like a huge prima donna and glared at everyone all the time. It was funny. XD

As for Yuri, well, he's just cool. And if you don't think so, then you suck. :p

The amusing thing about Leon is that he's actually such a dork. Toward the end of the show, I started to think that it's not even so much that he's trying really hard to be evil--it comes to him naturally because he has no social skills whatsoever. I mean, he'd be horrible on a blind date.

Anyway. While I'm here, I guess I should drop a few lines on behalf of one of my favorite Revolutionary Girl Utena characters.

That is, Ruka. Where to start? He only appears in two episodes, but he's a fascinating character whose actions have tremendous implications for those he's close to as well as the structure of the show as a whole. Many parts in the second season of Utena left me emotionally shaken, but almost none more so than
seeing Juri and Ruka lose to Utena.
It was awful and beautiful. Ruka's mini-arc also provides a lot of foreshadowing for the end of the series.

This is my list of underminded yet, good characters.

Kenske Aida (Evangelion) - He is very underminded since many people don't really take reconition of him since he doesn't have a episode dedicated to him. He is also like the only kid besides Hikari who does't get to pilot an Eva. He inputs quite a bit into the story and certain major events couldn't happen without him.

Rock Lee (Naruto) - Okay he isn't the most hated character, but he is not appreciated enough in the show even though he is the only one besides who gets to beat the crap out of Sasuke and push Garra to the edge. He just just get underminded in the series after his battle with Gaara. After that he never wins in fights or has big dramatic break throughs. Unlike when he first appeared and showed Sasuke who the was really the strongest. Plus he is the Bruce Lee based character of the series.

Note- Every Anime/Manga should have a character dedicated to Bruce Lee.

OK, here I go! I only have two, but hey! If I think of more I'll come back!!

Black Cat-Sven Volfied: I think Sven is way underappreciated in the Black Cat series because he is just used as a comic relief for Train! If people would just Watch him instead of Train, They'd see Sven is like Kakashi from Naruto! cool in his own way!!!

One Piece-Django the Hypnotist Even tho Django is basiclly a spin of a certain music artist, Django deserves credit for the sheer fact that he made a good dancer a better Anime character! Don't hate just because he resembles a child Mollester!

Er, I don't know how far you are exactly, but around the end of the series he gets his just deserts :animesmil Now moving on.

Naruto - Hinata I mean come now, I bet you could eventually feel this one comming. I mean if you actually tnd to think about it, Hinata was underappriciated for some of the same reasons that Sakura was, the lack of being a powerful character with a real use. I mean sure, Neji is way out of her league and such. however, that really doesnt matter though since we really havent seen her fight at all since the chunnin exams. Also, with Sakura and her almost amazing power change, just think of what Hinata could do... 'sides, she is cute >.>

Inoue - Bleach I think many fans of her kinda gave up on her when
She relised she could no longer be on the front lines since Tsubaki was destroyed by a lower person in soul society
. Yet, that doesnt mean she isnt important I mean she can still defend and heal! How can those not be important when you are fighting people who can blow you away with a single touch? Although it could be along with the Ebb and Flow of, "Main characters get stronger, bad guys eventually get stronger, Man characters get even stronger" kinda thing. and no, Its not just cause her breasts are rather large for a person her age. I say USE THEM AS WEAPONS!

Without a doubt, I'd have to say Suguru Fujisaki from Gravitation. He never seems to be in the spotlight... he was really just more of an add-on than an actual character. He just took up space in the story. Didn't really do much after volume 7 of the manga. It's a shame because he's so cute... ever listen to his parts in the anime in Japanese? Even his voice is cute. I just wanna... squish him...

*sigh* it seems the only ones who take note of his existance are the fanfiction writers... and then only because they have no one better to pair Hiro with, and everyone hates Ayaka. XP
