Your art sucks!
WOW! this really sucks! burn your portfolio, nobody needs to see this crap. Oh and his nose is fat.
So that was the first mean comment I've ever received on my fanart. lol. :animesigh

I've always been a pencil art kind of person. The fanart I submitted was the first one I ever did that I really messed around with real paint and photoshop... and I'm not that great with photoshop... and I admit it looks like I made it while being high.

I didn't want to ignore it, so I decided to pm that person with a polite message that I acknowledge this fanart isn't all that great, but I'd appreciate constructive criticism. Although I'm kind of expecting them to write back and tell me to go to hell, hehehe.

It amazes me when I go look at someone's art or cosplay, and I see a comment like this. After seeing that, I'll click on the commentor's screen name to see what kind of work they've submitted-- and it's usually... nothing. I usually get the impression that the people who write awful comments usually can't make anything worth ****. Though they could be some pro or whatever for all I care, but I think they should at least give the person who's showing their art some props for the work they put in, and be constructive with their criticism in order to help the other person improve.

So, tell me, has anyone ever told you your art sucks? How do you respond? Do YOU tell people their work sucks?

I totally feel with you, visualkei. Even though no one's ever told me that my art "sucks", I really understand where you're coming from.. and it must kind of hurt, huh?

People don't realize that the art of drawing comes from practicing and the love for it. Just because you don't draw like a well-known manga artist doesn't mean you literally suck... having the love to draw everyday will help you through. Different people who criticize your work wrongly or say that you can't draw worth crap aren't to be taken seriously... heck don't listen to them. They're just jealous cause they can't draw or either they're the kind of people who are amazing artists yet are still lame artists in comments. I know that I'm not that great at drawing myself, but no matter who the artist is, I try to give them the best comment possible because I don't want anyone to stop drawing because of me.

Only thing I really have to say is that don't listen to them and keep drawing. And also... don't give them the pleasure of making you upset.. they just suck. Period.

When I was in highschool I had an art teacher who -never- gave anyone a perfect score because she said that you are always capable of doing better. When I look at other people's work, I dont' think "wow, that's bad" I tend to think "Hey, this has potential because...."

Generally, actually getting a crit on this site is hard to come by ^^: either people tell you your stuff sucks or you get "OMG KAWAII !!1!" comments. It's a bit sad, really.

My brother always tells me flat out my art is bad XD; even if it isn't *laughs* so I tend to just laugh at people if they flame my art. I mean, who cares? I didn't draw it for them, you know? (though, since you mentioned cosplay ^^; I tend to take comments on costumes more personally... not sure why. Last con I went to, my brother told me "I saw this really bad cosplayer in the dealers room... and then they turned around and it turned out to be you. You suck." I was depressed for like a month XD;;; even though several people at the con told me I was cute... I even got glomped *laughs*)

People tend to think you should just crank out nice art too ^^; I mean, hey, this takes -effort-

I think that person needs glasses. I looked at your art, and I have to say, I think you're better then me. :p

I don't know, maybe that dude is jealous of you, or something. I hear trolls feed of the sorrow of random forum's members, and such. If you don't let them know that they've angered you, then they'll eventually fade away.

In the end, your drawings aren't even bad in the first place so, ha. You win. :D

Some people seem to join just to harass other members, why I don?t know. It really makes no sense. Perhaps it?s because they can?t draw themselves, or they are feeling really insecure about something and need to lash out. I wouldn?t let it bother you. ^_^

I took a look and I didn?t see anything wrong with your fan art. However, since I?ve already dealt with that member for harassing others I removed the comment. If they do it again report it and we?ll take care of it. It?s one thing to not like someone?s art but another to just go around telling people its crap without any real feedback on how to improve the picture.

Yeah, seriously, some people look at art and not realize that it took time and effort to make. I notice that a lot of people have a narrow-minded way of looking at art. What I think is really annoying is when you make fanart, and they expect you to basically copy the manga artists' style. That's just copying. Where's the creativity in that?

=] Thanks for those encouraging responses. I won't let some people get to me, I don't mind criticism, but I do mind being disrespected.

This has probably come up already, but your art probably isn't that bad. I havn't seen it, so I can't back that up, but I'm sure it's true! Just keep at it.
And if that isn't enough, take comfort in the fact that it can't be half as bad as mine.

I never really had people say my art sucks, straight in my face that is. Sometimes some constructive criticism here and there, but that's only good for improvement. :'D

Sometimes people may think I bash other people's art, though. That is only when people ask for criticism, like putting art on a forum. I just tell them everything I like and everything I don't like about the picture.

Mostly I leave strong expressions as "it sucks", since that wouldn't make any sense. I just like to tell on which points one could improve, or on which points they already seem to know what they're doing.

And sometimes I seem as if I bash something, but that is mostly because other people in the same thread are saying "Wow, that's perfect!" "It's so good!" "Can't see any flaws!". That just ticks me off and I want to show why it's not perfect, so good or flawless.

Noone may say anything sucks, unless it does. Same counts for saying something's perfect. :whoops:

Eh... you shouldn't say something sucks even if you think it does. It's rude and makes you sound arrogant.

I think jealousy is another reason why some people will go around trashing others' art. I remember when theOtaku's fanart section first got started it had this ranking system that showed the "Top 10 Artists". Innocent idea, bad results. A bunch of artists would start down-rating the top artists' works in an attempt to get onto the top 10. It worked, too. :animesigh

In truth, I have never seen any artist that was incredibly talented ever insult another's artwork. Every artist I admire for their works usually turn out to be humble and grounded, because they know how much practice and work it takes to achieve their level.

Haku Chou, please remain on topic. While your comforting comments are appreciated by visualkei, the purpose of this thread is to discuss if you have ever had a similar experience. It would also be in your best interests if you would read the Official OtakuBoards Rules so that you know what is expected of OB members.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

I've experienced this plenty of times, mostly here on OtakuBoards. Generally whenever I've had these comments it's been about a new version or something - I know a few people really hated the current V7 layout when it was introduced. I remember a few people saying stuff like "What have you done to OB? I'm never coming back!"

You can imagine, if that was taken personally it could be quite hurtful - some members just had absolutely no tact and were incredibly blunt and nasty about their disapproval.

But I realized - long before V7 came about - that no matter what I do, I cannot please everyone. All I can really do is try to please myself and the majority of other people. As long as most people are happy with what's being done, I can consider it successful.

So I think many of us experience this type of criticism. Unfortunately people who are rude like that probably aren't going to change...all you can do is use it as fuel to improve your work. And of course, you have to take it in context too.

Constructive criticism is good, but the blunt "that sucks" type of stuff usually comes from people who are only trying to be annoying anyway. It's usually best to just ignore that type of stuff.

The opinion varies. Your idea of whether something sucks or not isn't the universal one. Just a while ago in the Art Studio there was a thread that gave a link to someone's oekaki profile and the creator of the thread thought his/her art sucked, while I thought it was pretty solid. *shrug*

It's just not a nice thing to do. Seeing as it's never happened to you... you're lucky.

When I was just beginning in Photoshop and looking for ways to improve, I posted on a friend's BBS. I got flamed out of there, interestingly enough, but I sought the guy's advice again since he was extremely good at graphic design. He told me "That looks absolutely horrible. Granted, it's better than most beginner's work, but it's really, really bad" (or something to that effect). These comments made me strive to do better, just so one day I could be better than him. About five months later, I beat him in a graphics battle. He's still a very harsh critiquer, and he can be pretty blunt.

The moral of my little story is: use what they say to make you do better, even if it is completely negative. It's a game of determination. Had I been wishy-washy, I wouldn't've come this far.

Yeah, no matter what you do, you can't please anyone. Even if something seems "perfect", there will always be someone out there that will find a "flaw." A lot of it depends on tastes, and some people are critical, some are just mean.

It's good to hear that you didn't immediately hate the guy that harshly criticized your work, Retribution. If someone told me what I made sucked, I'd like to know why they think so, and perhaps that person can help me improve, and to share with them how/why I made something the way I did. Like James said, some people really ARE out there just to be annoying, and you won't get much from them except more empty criticism.

You can either ignore it or let it get to you. Sometimes letting it get to you isn't all that bad, seeing how it may fuel you to make a comeback in competitive situations. =]

I've never gotten negative comments on my art (aside from teachers, but they don't count, seeing as how they only like the drawings that they tell you to make), but whenever I see someone badmouthing someone's art, I want to chew them out for doing so. There's no problem with suggesting improvements, but most people suggest them in a rude way.

"OMG your art sucks try drawing the proportions correct next time you loser"

Stuff like that is immature.

I don?t draw myself so I can?t say that anyone has told me my fan art sucks. But every now and then I get a comment telling me I suck for stealing fan art and using it in the wallpapers I create. It?s kind of funny in a way since the pictures in question come from an art book and the person claiming that I stole from them actually stole from the anime artist who published the book. So in turn I end up turning them in for plagiarizing from an art book from a series by claiming they drew the picture.

Personally, and others have mentioned this, I think people are a bit of an idiot when it comes to critiquing art so harshly, either they one, don?t know how to draw themselves, two are just a jerk, or three, haven?t a clue what they are talking about. They assume that since your art may look off to them that you suck when in fact a lot of effort when into your art and they themselves are too ignorant to recognize that. They are also hiding behind the screen of being online instead of saying that too your face.

As for myself, when I look at someone?s art I try to tell them what I like and what I don?t like. Not to be mean, but to try and give them something that might help them improve. If I don?t see anything that feels off, then I stick to what I like about it. I never tell someone that they suck, not only is it rude, but it certainly doesn?t help them improve.

Personally, I've never had that kind of experience. Flamers like that would probably be banned from the site sooner or later. I've seen people do that to other's work too, be it fanarts, fanfictions or other sections. I agree with you on one part. For those people who are trying to be arrogant, I usually look up into their work to see if theirs proved to be much better, but they end up having none.

If I ever encounter this situation, I'd just ignore the comment. My speculation is either the person is jealous of your work and is trying to point out that your art isn't good enough or not worth to be posted in the net. Like the last person said, they probably don't know how to draw themselves, that's why they're unappreciative of your efforts and expect your work to be perfect. :animeangr

I've never told anyone their art sucks before, I think it's immature to say that and it's not what a critic should say. To artworks which have obvious flaws, I usually add an advice on which parts to improve and how to improve on them. Telling them their art sucks would only discourage them and it doesn't make things any better.

I've had it happen with my graphic art. But, you know what? I didn't let it get to me. I was new to it at the time, so I didn't care what people were saying. It actually pushed me harder just to prove them wrong, that I could make something brilliant.
For a solid two or three years I dished out some good graphics, I knew they weren't the best, but I was proud of my work. If someone tells you your art sucks, don't pay them any attention. If they aren't willing to give you legitimate feedback, it means they aren't worth your time.

Artwork takes progress. I wish some people would realize that and grow up.

Besides, I cannot do any decent artwork with my hands. I envy anyone who can draw and make it actually look like something.
