DeadSeraphim
Well, not really. But it might as well be. 2006 was apparently the last mega-show held by the ESA, as most of its key vendors can't justify the cost of doing e3 in its current form anymore. Thus, it's being remodelled and will be 'evolving into a more intimate event focused on targeted, personalized meetings and activities'. It's becoming less a mega-showcase and more an industry meeting, basically, and visitor numbers will likely be scaled right down to the low hundreds. Anakoni Stark
Big deal. Only the big games get mentioned anyway so maybe now the lesser known games will finally get a chance to shine. The majority of people can not attend the event so i really dont see what the problem is!
same here. I mean if they're going to scale down e3, I'm for it. because this will draw away attention from the big three [sony / microsoft / nintendo] and the ever awe inducing booth of EA, and could bring more attention to the more unkown development teams, like the guys at Irrational Games, go BioShock, Silcon Knights, the guys behind the Too Human trilogy, etc. etc. that's all I've got to say about it. this will be good. but one thing still is on my mind: what's going to happen to the booth babes? :animedepr - Leon Fury
How can you be so sure? My experiences with the scaling down of certain events like this around my home country suggest that it will be the little guys who miss out, big time. With less room for E3 extravanganza, the little guys could feel the squeeze from the big 3 moreso than they do right now. For all intents and purposes, E3 might be scaling it back down to just the big 3 major players. I seriously doubt it will be the little guy's answered prayers.
GTK
This is rather sad since I was planning on going to the next E3 ~_~ if it's getting scaled down, it's probably no longer worth the trouble, especially if it's just gonna be a bunch of meetings and such. Boo. Maybe it will at least -sound- better once more info gets released? It was a hassle for me to try to work in going anyway, but I sorta wish I'd gone this year instead of going to a different convention ^^;;;
Morpheus
They're scaling down for one simple reason: The people that they are cutting out don't really matter from an industry standpoint. Sure, it's cool to go to E3, but you really don't matter at all compared to game reviewers and other industry personel. We'll still get the same news. I just see this as ridding of the completely useless floor show.
James
E3 was always filling up with people who weren't really supposed to be there. Unfortunately that made the show more cumbersome than it needed to be. The E3 Media Festival will still be good, but it won't be the biggest gaming show in the world now - perhaps Tokyo Game Show will take that title from here on. I just hope that this encourages Nintendo to go back to doing Space World (or at least participating in TGS). Certainly, the big companies aren't going to steer away from events like that completely - instead, most will probably just hold their own exclusive media events.
Charles
Eh, I'm mainly going to miss the big conferences. The nerdish part of me always derived excitement from seeing how the big three would outdo one another. But, I really did feel bad for the journalists who had to cover those things. I can just imagine braving huge crowds all day and working through the nights to cover everything. Personally I loved how crazy E3 time was but for journalists it had to be hellish. AnimeHeroX
Well it suck's that E3 will be gone but with all the big companies pulling out of it their's no way to keep it going. but really that Expo was never really for the fans it was just a way for the gaming comapines to show off their new stuff and if E3 was so great how come it was so hard to get to. i guess i'm not going to miss it since i never got the chance to go but you don't always get what you want in life. so i won't be really upset to see E3 gone. SO LONG E3 I NEVER KNEW THEE. :p
Fyxe
Well, that's no fun. Game nerds should be able to go crazy at conventions. That's why there are conventions. It's a sad day for us all. Even if you don't know it yet.
Desbreko
I suppose I'm going to miss seeing photos of all the extravagant booths, like the forest Nintendo constructed for Zelda: Twilight Princess last year. (That koi pond was awesome.) But as long as we still get news about the latest games and whatnot, I'll be happy. And I doubt that will change, since getting information out to people in the industry--which is then also passed on to us--is the whole point of the show. On the other hand, I guess this eliminates my chances of weaseling into the show.
BlueYoshi
Even though we'll be getting gaming news either way, I will miss the hype, attention, and all-round madness of the E3 period. I usually look forward to the May/June issue of Nintendo magazine because it's more or less dedicated to E3's Nintendo booths, and is packed with all sorts of blogs and pictures, which I thought was a good alternative to actually being there. It's way more fun than reading about it at IGN or GameSpot. Ah well, there's always TGS, but it's not the same. :animedepr

Those had to be some tight deadlines, too. I will miss E3. I always loved reading and watching about it. They booth decorations and all that hype...whoo-eee, you could cut it with a knife! I didn't realise until this year that only journalists and industry employees were allowed in. I thought it was just a "buy a ticket, get in, go crazy" type-thing, and I've always wanted to go to play demos. But alas...I am a lowly busboy at Bennigans, not a journalist or programmer or whatever. Edit: Does anyone know why Nintendo didn't participate in TGS? DeadSeraphim
They just didn't want to. They'll probably release any pertinent information during their keynote at the Leipzig Game Convention.
James
Nintendo never participates at TGS. I suspect this is because they invest most of their show budget on E3 each year - they only see a point in one "major" show a year, I think. This news about E3 is obviously recent, so I doubt Nintendo would have time to prepare a TGS showing even if they wanted to. But next year, anything can happen. I think with Nintendo you're more likely to get keynotes at major shows and then they will hold their own demonstrations when they feel the time is right (whether that be at E3 Media Festival or a Nintendo-only convention of some kind).
Andy
Hmmm...well that sucks. I really liked E3, all the crazy nerds running around and the paranoid journalists flying all over the place. Ah, yes, it seems those days are now turning into nothing but old memories. And I always enjoyed the game previews and what not. Oh and who could forget all the pretty lights, yay. But, do you know what I miss the most, the booth babes. So, in conlusion class, the booth babes are hot^^
vegeta rocker
No huge deal to me honestly, Tokyo Game Show is really just so much cooler. E3 used to rule, before it was opened to the public a few years back. Then came the vanessa carlton concert..... then the lack of space due to crowding over the DOA girl models.... It turned too corporate for my taste really, seriously, why pay uber amounts of money to get a spot there when you are just competing against overhyped games anyway? E3 should just close its doors to the general public, just have lots of feeds and news. Just my two cents.
