Hmm. Tough question. (even harder trying to put this into words.) I like both that's for sure. One thing I don't like about manga's, and this is only a minor set back because I'm not much of the reader type, is that whenever I get tired or sleepy it's hard to read them because my brain would go dead. But what I do like about them, (from what I read anyway) if they're action pack, they can easily suck me in.

I guess you can say I like anime a little more because I like to see all of my action in motion. One thing I hate about anime though is that when they have fights that're really good in the manga, and you can kind of imagine / picture the impact of a fierce blow, but when you see it in motion, it's not as hard as it should be. (Ex. Naruto vs Kiba. That kick that Naruto landed should've been a lot more harder than what was shown. Atleast that's how I feel about it. "shrugs")

I prefer manga because it's the original, unmolested work of a brilliant mind. RuroKen, Inuyasha, Yuugiou and so many others just pale as animes in comparison to the grayscale books on which they're based. I'd rather sacrifice color and voices for a quality story.
Don?t you know? It?s the
molestation
that often brings out aspects of a manga that would otherwise remain untold. ^_~ As Des pointed out, fillers aren?t always bad, some of them are downright funny.

To be honest, straight manga is boring. It lacks depth in that there is no voices or motion to the fights or sounds to the ones where they use magic effects. The pictures may be pretty, but in the end they are still and lifeless in that respect. Also, manga?s are not written on a very high level of reading comprehension so they are far too easy to finish quickly. Where you can?t fast forward through an animated episode without losing part of what?s happening. Reading a manga is nothing like sitting down and really getting into a well written novel. So in the end I prefer the animated version over the manga since there?s just so much more being portrayed than a simple picture and words.

So in the end I prefer to watch a show animated and then to go back and read the manga if I like the series. There are a few exceptions, like the Yu-Gi-Oh series where I prefer the manga. But that?s because the animated version is highly edited to make it a kiddy show. I?d love to see that unedited as the manga is quite different.

For me, it's gotta be manga. But then, this is the girl who learned to read at three, so I guess my opinion doesn't matter...

I like being able to read at my pace. In an anime, it moves along regardless of whether you're paying attention (which, nine times out of ten, I am not). Being able to write the character's thoughts makes it a lot less reliant on dialogue, whereas in anime, they depend on the dialogue to progress the story and it often feels cheesy. Manga's cheaper as well... it's a lot easier to save up for a volume of manga to get my anime fix than waiting until I have 30 bucks for a DVD.

When I first started really getting into anime it was still being heavily edited so I primarily collected manga and the art books as I preferred it over the anime. Now that it has a bigger market and shows like Fruits Basket, Full Metal Panic, DNAngel and many others are being done better with less editing and fairly decent subbing that stance has changed. So now, unless it?s a series unlikely to be subbed (like some of the yaoi and yuri series) I usually prefer the anime for some of the same reasons that Aaryanna does.

Although often some of the manga?s will have better artwork, the ones with a lot of action in them are more fun to watch than to read. Though they are also loaded with fillers like Naruto. I?ve quit watching that one altogether and gone back to only reading the manga. Or Earthian, the manga is wonderful and the little bit of anime they made was a total disappointment, as it didn?t stay true to the manga at all. So in conclusion I tend to lean towards preferring the anime, but it?s so close I pretty much like both about the same. With the exceptions of one where I like manga better or the anime better, it really depends on the series.

In all honesty I don't think either one trumps the other, both have their advantages and disadvantages.

I prefer manga over anime, because I just think the characters look better in manga form, than they do in their anime form. Although, it is really a close call, for me. I love both watching anime, and reading manga a lot.

To me, both of them are pretty awesome! It just depends on what anime it is or manga. For instance, Princess Tutu is waaaay better in anime because of it's elegant design in beauty. But as for manga such as xxxHOLIC and Tsubasa, they're better in manga because of it's breathtaking details in the drawings.

I like to read the manga more. The manga for Fruits Basket was way better than the anime. It shows more and you can understand it better

Welcome to Otakuboards Mar, although we do like that you think the Fruits Basket Manga was a lot better than the anime. As to increase a discussion, it would be better if you were to elaborate on exactly why you though it was better, the art? the words used? Things like that. ~Ikillion

It really depends.

With many manga, I prefer the manga because of the art. Many artists have their own styles which get either altered or destroyed by their anime counterparts.

Also, manga has no filler. I HATE filler.

The biggest reason I have for preferring manga is because of speed. Personally, I can't take watching the Naruto anime. There will also be a small amount of action followed by a ten-minute explaination of something causing 45 minutes of reading to become 2 and a half to 3 hours of watching.

I DO love to see the battle scenes in many of these transitions. Much as I love the battles in the Naruto manga, they are presented much better in the anime. For this reason, I buy the manga then watch the fight on CN :p

I don't always prefer manga though. Anime that begin as anime are always better than their manga counterparts. Cowboy Bebop without the music = boring. Neon Genesis without the *** ******* **** **** **** ** ** ** ****** = boring. And don't even get me started on the FLCL manga...

In the end I'd call it a tie. Manga that begin as manga are better that way and vice versa.

Anime is better if I want to enjoy fight scenes and that type of stuff. But if your in it for "story Lines" and ect. or if you don't got alot of time on your hands then i'd go with Manga. But it varies with which Anime/Manga you're reading/watching. Like with Naruto or Yu Yu Hakusho I'd go with some unedited anime, but with like Fruits Baskets or something like that I'd go with the Manga.

Watching on TV is better for me. I fall asleep without much stimulation (maybe something's wrong with me), and sitting while reading will just make me hit the desk.

I would have to lean more on the anime at this time. Due to my current lifestyle and schedule it fits in better. Can't really read the manga unless I'm surrounded by water because my cats want attention when I home (one will try to eat the pages if I don't get the hint). Anime also gives me a chance to download after a long day. I also enjoy the artwork and some of the characters.
There are some stories that I do prefer the manga over the anime though. All in all I enjoy both of them but at the time I am more into the anime.
I prefer anime, it's a more passive experience. No thinking required.

Manga also tends to be in black and white. My life is in colors, so I like my entertainment to be. ^^
I agree. Anime tends to be more smooth, more like real life. Reading a manga book, is like reading a comic book. I can use my imagination, but it's so much cooler actually seeing the expressions, the fights, et cetera. And yes, Manga does tend to be in black and white, and I like my colors.

I enjoy both, I couldn't choose between them, though if you are watching on tv, mangas don't have commericals.

also I don't know about other people, but I own quite a few mangas and I realized that they looked a little like coloring books. No Offence to thoughs who like their mangas in best condition, but One day when you are really bored you will find that coloring in the anime charectors is a fun thing to do.

the only anime that I like better then its manga is Fullmetal Alchemist and thats because Ed looks a little cooler in the anime.

Both. I watch more Anime than I read Manga, but I like both a lot. I most likely prefer anime since I'm more of visual person. Sometimes though the anime can go completely off from the anime, like with Hellsing. Hellsing was a great anime in my opinion, but there was a lot more value in the manga over the anime.

REGAMER-X, give us a little to work with here. Since the conversation is about comparing the two media, maybe you could give us your favourite or least favourites attributes about them. Something to help fodder the coals of conversation. Remember, Anime Lounge focuses on discussion. -r2

Personally, I'd rather read manga. WHen I'm watching anime, I have the tendancy to get bored and start flipping through a magazine or something, and I lose focus. xD I'm very ADD. But when I'm reading manga, I can focus more becuase there's not much else you can do when you have a book in your hand. :animeswea

I agree! For me, its as plain as day. Manga is probably best, in my oppinion. In the series RuruKen i grew up watching the anime. I had a few favorite episodes, and was hoping to get them on dvd. (still hoping) But then they cut it off in February 2004. (yes i do remember) i cried so hard. So to ease my pain i started collecting the manga, which i just recently have finished. With what they look like and sound like i put together their voices and to me the manga turned out better-ish.( this is my word and no i didn't misspell it)

In another series, Inuyasha, i seem to like the anime better. But its not official yet since i've only collected 9 volumes. But Inuyasha is one of the best anime/manga i ever read/seen. Rurouni Kenshin is the best of all time!!

(I'm sorry if there are any spoilers)

I'd rather watch anime than read manga. It requires less brain power :D I can't say that I read manga a whole lot, but I've always really loved animation. It's like bringing art to life. The characters also have more personality if they have voices and stuff... So that's why I 'd rather watch anime.
