Okay, I just started going to hardcore band shows this week, but I did not hardcore dance like my friends wanted me to. I plan to at the next show later this month, but I'm not sure about hardcore dancing enough yet. Could someone tell me, during a hardcore song is there a certain part when you're supposed to hardcore dance and parts when you shouldn't? Or could you mosh during the whole song? I wasn't sure if you should only dance during breakdowns or not. Also, I've seen instructional videos on how to hardcore dance, but do you think it really matters if you do it like you're really supposed to or if you just swing your arms and legs around? I think hardcore dancing looks like a lot of fun, and it's definitely my favorite type of dance.

While I myself classify with Hip Hop dance, I have a few friends/assosciates who do hardcore dancing. From what I've seen, it can be either the whole 'mosh pit, beat each other up' thing or you can do the more defined dances, such as the weaving legs or whichever.

From what I've heard, there are seperate areas for both things within the crowd itself. Like, the dancers try not to get mixed up with the people beating the pulp out of each other. While I can't say it's my scene, I know what it is, and I've seen it. I respect that they have their own thing, and I'm happy that other white people can actually dance without looking like fools. ;)

Try looking up some moves.

Eeek, I like to hardcore dance. There's one main part during the song which is when people start hardcore dancing. It's known as many names, but the most common (and the way I call it) name for that certain part of the song is called a breakdown. It's when the tempo/beat slows down, when the pit really opens up, and when the kids go for it all. You'll see windmills, spin kicks, floor punching, and all the like. A lot of times, a way to get into the pit, or during a breakdown itself, people start to "two-step" which is where you swing one leg in front of the other while bending down low and doing something with your arms/hands. Wiki's a better explainer for all of this, heh.
The two-step is also common in hardcore dancing. It is used exclusively during mid-tempo punk rock styled riffs and beats. Much like the two step in breakdancing or country line dancing, it involves placing one foot in front of the other and hopping forward onto it, then repeated with the other foot, etc. Combined with forward thrusts by the arm opposite to the forward-stepping foot, the dance creates a sort of "running in place" illusion. The move is commonly practiced and refined to look slick or interesting.
There are some pretty good videos out there, especially on youtube (sigh, haha.)
Just give me a PM if you have any other questions and what-not.
;D

Alright, here's my beef with Hardcore dancing:

It's called HARDCORE dancing for a reason.

Keep it out of Metal shows! We have no need for tight pants and wannabe karate moves in the mosh pits. I know this is extremely elitist of me, but come on - you all know me well enough by now. Hardcore dancing should be done at Hardcore shows, not Metal concerts. Alas, there's always some kids doing that stuff, and it's just annoying. Argh.

I don't mosh, but I do go freaking crazy during some music. in fact I'm especially proud of one instance where I headbanged hevily for 17 minutes straight through 2 Japanese metal songs and had a headache lasting 3 days *does devil horns* and my brother and I rocked harder than anyone else in the ampatheater at ozzfest (the crowd sucked so bad...).

On another note, what is a hardcore dance? ^^;;

I can't stand moshes, mainly because last time I went moshing my foot was punctured by some insane ***** in stilettos. What about you are in the moshpit for Jet, most popular Aussie band at the time makes them think they can wear ****ing stilettos. **** moshing.

Anything crazy is awesome in my opinon. At the last show I went to, there was a wide variety of bands playing. You had the heavy death metal band Desolation and their partners in crime Wache the Dead. Than you had two extremely screamo bands called the Roe and Illis Amora. Well the singer of Illis Amora kept getting into Desolation's moshpits and hardcore dancing and crap. Finally somebody came plowing through and knocked the kid straight on his behind.
Still hardcore dancing is fun. I don't quite how to do it. I just know that you don't do it at metal shows like Jake said. You become an instant target. If it was safe to do it, I would attempt some moves but I'd look odd.

Just know that at true hardcore concerts, you can mosh. (If the folks at a Suicidal Tendencies show saw someone pulling this hardcore dancing they'd be targeted as well)

Edit:
I found some pretty good examples of hardcore dancing. This is so funny yet lame.

I was watching some videos of people hardcore dancing, and all I could think to myself was "They look so dumb, yet hilarious."
Then my friend reminded me that there's hardcore dancing in AFI's video for "The Leaving Song pt. II," and I rewatched it, and it instantly became cool. I really don't think you'd be able to dance to that song in real life, though.
I'm afraid that if, for some reason, I go to a hardcore show and try to thrash about like that, I'd get knocked down. Then I wouldn't want to do it anymore, and I'd feel really stupid.

I do headbang to two specific songs; Nightwish "Slaying the Dreamer" and Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody." Nothing else really does it for me like that.

Here's an excellent example of two-stepping. I prefer this one to the one that Box Hoy put up, granted I don't really like the song in the video I have.

They're also quite good at other things, like their floor punching.
It's a good video, you'll learn a bit as I did.

I watched a couple of the videos...

They sort of reminded me of me and my sister having ***** fights.

So, I guess if you wanted advice from me, just get into a fight with the air.
You may hit someone else, but that will make it more realistic.
