YoukaiAlchemist
Lately, I have heard of writers, one of whom is a close friend of mine, who see characters they write about actually alive in our world. Normally the characters are there only for a moment. Sometimes they actually say something (according to the guy that wrote Hellblazers, Jon Constantine actually told him that "The secret to magic is, Any ***** can do it.") of course the conversation could be made up. Regardless, I want to know what you all think. O.o What is causing these writers to see thier characters living and breathing in our world? Possession. Visions. Or perhaps insanity? Are you familiar with the term "psychosomatic"? That means thinking something, believing it, and thus making it happen. For example -- you don't want to go to school. Therefore, you make yourself sick by thinking about it, worrying, believing it, etc... until you finally become sick. Your friend could be actually thinking these characters are alive, believing it, "knowing" it, until he "sees"/"hears" one, when really, it is all mental. Just a thought. DeadSeraphim
An overactive imagination. Or it could be all the drug and alcohol abuse. Either/or, really.
YoukaiAlchemist
from what she told me, she was just out shopping when she spotted 2 people that looked exactly like characters from a story she wrote. One of them winked at her. O.o True, she does believe in some supernatural things, but this really freaked her out. I don't think she was expecting it. and I know she doesn't do drugs. ^_^ though thanks for the imput. Maybe it was overactive imagination.
Sara
Or possibly sleep deprivation. Or possibly she just wants attention and doesn't know how else to get it.
Andy
Hmm...well this is fascinating, a possible supernatural occurence. I would like to believe that this might actually be true, being the fan of the supernatural that I am. But, alas, I do not think that this is a likely story. And as others have said before me, I agree that this is some form of overactive imagination and such. So, in conlusion, I do not think there was ever really anything there, so I say it was more or less a "mental case" in which it was all the mind.
2010DigitalBoy
Maybe they found that pink crystal which is used to bring your pictures to life in that episode of Ninja Turtles and wrote their stories while wearing it/holding it.
The13thMan
I don't think it's supernatural at all. There are enough people in this world for a person to write a story and then see a person in real life that resembles that person very closely. As for the wink, i'd say it was just coincidence. Is your friend hot? ^L^ Ah, but who knows? I'm not entirely ruling out the possibility of the supernatural, there are too many unexplained things in this world to be certain of it one way or the other. Later. YoukaiAlchemist
Thanks for the input. O.o Personally I think the sleep deprevation may be a good possibility because she tells me a lot about how her kids keep her up half the night. I don't think it's for attention though, since I was the first person she told (We share lots of secrets and such, and so she's already got lots of attention) o.O and I also keep the idea that it may still be a paranormal thing, due to the number of reports. though it could just be people that simply look like the characters. I'm sure it's happened before.

Those characters don't have any existence outside of the series of chemical reactions in your friend's brain that make up her consciousness. Not only do they not exist in the material world, but they barely exist in the immaterial world.
SunfallE
Regardless, I want to know what you all think. O.o What is causing these writers to see thier characters living and breathing in our world?
I would imagine that instead actually seeing their character that they wrote about, they are instead seeing some behaviors that remind them of the character. Which considering how many people there are in the world, isn?t all that surprising. If they were to take the time to really get to know the people they would find that other than say looks or the occasional phrase, the person isn?t anything like the character they are writing about. Seeing characters in the people around you can be a great tool for creativity as one of my English teachers once told me, that if you don?t see people saying stuff, then be careful when writing a story where they do. She was trying to get us to see that on some level it?s important to have a degree of realism in the actions and conversations between your characters in a story. And that observing how people behave by watching how they gesture, move and speak you can use it to improve your writing style.
from what she told me, she was just out shopping when she spotted 2 people that looked exactly like characters from a story she wrote. It?s one thing to feel others look or act similar, but to cross over and actually think they are is kind of pointless and unrealistic. Sounds like she needs to quit thinking about stories and do something else for a change.
o.O and I also keep the idea that it may still be a paranormal thing, due to the number of reports. though it could just be people that simply look like the characters. I'm sure it's happened before.
Reports do not make paranormal experiences true. Since one often uses common characteristics among real people to describe characters in their books, it?s not surprising to see people that look similar to what you might describe in a book. I would imagine that you can find all sorts of people that look like one described in a book. It?s a little hard to come up with completely original looks in a character as I?m sure you?re bound to find at least one person somewhere in the world who looks like the description. Gavin
Interesting, most interesting. I suppose like writers, depending on the circumstances I might write a character who I could see existing in the real world. But as for actually seeing them, well that's something I've never been too drunk/too tired to actually accomplish. I think SunfallE is probably right when she says that certain people in the world remind you of characters you've written about, or vice-versa and that's where it comes from.
YoukaiAlchemist
Good points. I think I agree with you. >.> though I would love to think that possibly the characters of a book might come to life (Well, the good ones), it's a little too out there. then again, if they DID actually show up in such a way, it's probable that they would dissappear soon after. ^_^() but that's wishful thinking. Yeah, I agree with you.
