Are You a Band Geek?

Is there anybody else, besides me, who's a band geek? If you dont' know what a band geek is than I'll tell you. A band geek is someone who loves playing in a band and loves music.

I'm a band geek and proud of it. I love music so much. I love playing in my school band and my own jazz band. It's so cool and fun. My jazz band is call "Horns on Crack".
I play the trumpet, piano, drums, and I can kinda play the clarinet.

Here's some questions:
1. Are you a band geek?
2. Do you play an instrument or instruments?
3. If so, what instrument or instruments do you play?
4. Do you play in your school band?
5. do you have your own band?

I need to get Aiyanna back on the OtakuBoards...

Haha, band geeks. Nice. Yes, I suppose I would call myself a band geek, since I seem to do a lot with my band. (Not only that, but me and my friends call ourselves band geeks all the time...)

For concert band, I play oboe, [strike]only the best instrument ever[/strike], but for marching, I'm thrown on the drumline to play cymbals. >.O Back in middle school, I played marching bells.
Because my district is relatively small, there aren't seperate bands, so when you sign up to take band, your thrown in for both marching and concert. It's annoying if you play a double reed instrument, since you either have to be a drum major, a flag girl, or learn another instrument. Since I'm short and would rather die than twirl a flag, I opted to learn bells during middle school, then was tossed over to cymbals for high school.

Do I have a band? Not a chance; I'm not that cordinated.

There are then the miscellaneous reasons somebody would suspect me of being a band geek. Me and my friends hang out in the music room during the morning study period (before classes start), and I was assigned (more like forced) to make the band website during this summer. Oh, and I was also voted to be the Historian of the band, due to my mad photography and Photoshop skillz. =)

Part of what makes high school band so fun is our teacher, whom we call Struyker. He came into power last year, and everybody who wasn't a freshman was immensly relieved, since the previous director did absolutely nothing but bring the band down. Struyker's hyper and energetic (he's called himself 'ADD Boy') and young too.
Not even a year after he came, he submitted a recording of us playing "I Want You Back" (marching band) to some people in New York...and thus, we were chosen to represent Illinois in the Nation's Day Parade (during Veteran's Day weekend) in New York City this November. [/shameless plug]

Thus, we have to raised $60,000 to get there. o_o So I've been doing everything I can, going to carwashes (except one, I was half-sick and my mother forbade me).

So yes. I am a band geek. =)

I don't see why it should be moved...it's more about band geeks than it is about music.

1. No, i wouldn't say i'm a band geek....but some other people might.
2. I do
3. Electric guitar, alto sax, bassoon, and clarinet. Also since i can play the sax and clarinet i can also play the variations of the instrument such as bass clarinet or baritone sax.
4. Yup, i have since the 6th grade and now i'm going on to college. ^L^ 7 years.
5. No, i don't...but i'm definitely going to try to form one when i get in college.

I love music too. I almost always have it playing in the background, right now i'm listening to Freebird by Lynard Skynard. Don't take that as an indicator to the genre of music that i listen to, i listen to nearly all forms of rock, some classic, and even a little jazz. Some of my friends don't understand my obsession to music....they prefer the silence....or video game music. ::shrug:: Their choice.

I'm going to miss marching band, i probably won't go into music when i get into college...oh well.

Haha, i know exactly what you mean. I came into high school marching band playing the bassoon and was forced into learning a new instrument which is why i picked up the alto sax. Double reed instruments are way to fragile to march....could you imagine somebody marching with a bassoon??? Of course not.

HELL YEAH I'M A BAND GEEK!!

...am I allowed to say 'hell' at these boards? ^_^;;

Yes yes yes. I am a band geek. Band, really, is my life. And people know it!

Instruments: French Horn (my baby!), Trumpet, Fluglehorn, Bass Guitar (I'm learning) and...uh...oh yeah! MELOPHONE! Tee hee, Marching Band is much fun. I can honk away on a recorder too, and pull off a scale on the Euphonium. Trombone is next.

Dedication: Lets just say I'd do anything for band. I dropped Drivers Ed to get into another band class. I gave away my computer to go to one day of Band Camp. I have over 7 G's of instruments in my room. I own a F-horn tie. I was the only freshman in the Chamber Winds, last years...well, it was the higher of the two bands...I was the only student (and a freshman!) to play among HIRED PROFESSIONALS for the school musical. It was so scary, I could've wet myself. I didn't, thankfully. XD

I'm Vice President of our band currently, and I've attended all our fundraising events as we work towards getting to New York. I ask for music books and valve oil for my birthday and christmas. I think that basically screams 'BAND GEEK'. I'd actually love to have a flourescent sign in my room that said that...that'd be so cool!

Hehe, yeah, I also hang out with Katana in the morning, in the band room. I think I was one of the ones who chose it as 'the spot' for our posse. I have the tendency to sit right next to Struyker's door, and also to put up random music quotes on the chalkboard.

And...I have that 'You Know You've Been In Band Too Long When...' list bookmarked somewhere...I'll never be in band too long! I go to school for band, talk about band when I'm home, and would rather be at band than at home!

I can't say that I have my own band...though I could probably put one together if I really wanted to...

1. Are you a band geek?
Yes, I am a band geek and damn proud about it!!
2. Do you play an instrument or instruments?
Not really...
3. If so, what instrument or instruments do you play?
Keyboards, 5-string guitar (all horribly)
4. Do you play in your school band?
Nope...
5. do you have your own band?
Nope, I'm an innocent groupie in my friend's band though...

So, you're probably wondering how a person so untalented like me can be called a band geek. Well, somehow I weaved my way into hanging out with the band. My brother and some people I know are/were in the band.

One day, my friend had this conversation (I was hanging out with the band...) and they started talking about being band geeks. Then my friend labelled me as one because I'm always there...

So, I am a band geek. A band geek that doesn't have to learn sheet music.

2. Yes!
3. Clairinet, some ukelele, recorder.
4. I played last year, but I'm not sure if I'll get band this year (I put it as my first elective though :D)
5. No....
I learned recorder and ukelele in school. Does that count? I've probably forgotten all the ukelele chords though.

it's like you made a thread just for me xD

I am a super band geek. I have been since grade 7, so for four years. First couple of years, I spent nearly every lunch hour in the band room. I was in every band and choir my school had to offer in grade's 8 and 9. I won the very first Brian Appleby music award, which was a huge deal at my school because it was named after the best music teacher my school ever had, as well as one of the best conductors/teachers in my entire city.

I play the trumpet, and I sing/have sung in choral. I used to play flute, violin and piano, among other things. But trumpet remained my passion, and 4 years later, I'm one of the best trumpets in my grade, and my teacher always asks me when I'll be joining jazz xD I just didn't have time this past year. But coming up, I plan on being every band. Maybe trying out for the provincial one.. my teacher seems to think I'll make it, soo.. Mostly I just look forward to jazz though =3 jazz is my passion.

My own band? That's sort of.. in the process xD

BAND NERDS UNITE!!!!!

Yeah, I'm a band nerd (I don't like the trem "geek), and I'm ready to play any instarment at any time. If proud to say that I've been playing since the fifth grade. TAKE IT, LOSERS!!! As a brass player, my arsinale is a litte weird. I play Trombone as my main, percussion ans my second, flute as my third, and a little Tenor Sax. I also play a little trumpet. I started out as a trombonist, but quickly learned more instraments. I perfer percussion over any other instament, but trombone is naturally me favorite wind instrament. I also play guitar, but that doesn't really apply to anything outside of Jazz Band. I was in a Jazz band, once. But it didn't suit me, so I don't do it any more. I perfer just strait up Concert Band. And now.....

BAND NERDS TO ARMS!!!!!!!!

Just to clear this up, the distinction between geek and nerd is thus: a nerd won't go to Stifler's party, because he's studying, while a geek will go to Stifler's party, and everyone will give him a wedgie.

Now that's out of the way...

I play the flute and I played it in a band, but I don't think my town has a concept of 'band geek'. It could be because the music lessons and band rehearsals aren't connected with school, but with a centralised, government-funded trust. In fact, all the cool kids went to the music centre. The nightlife where I live is for violent idiots who like to break the bar and the barman at the end of a large night out, so losing Friday nights to Concert Band actually enhanced our social standing.

Oh, yes. Finally the band geeks come together. Rawk.

Yes, I'm definately a band geek. I've been playing drums since the 5th grade. Mostly playing anything but xylophone and marimba because I can't stand mallet instruments. Used to play a little cello, but that was only for one year. Last year I did marching band even though I didn't have to, but I had to play in the pit. Timpani's, by the way, are a serious pain to haul around. And a pain to tune in the middle of a song.

This year I got promoted up to snare line, even though I'm only a sophmore. I'm convinced that the band directors have been preparing me for it, because I've gotten most if not ever snare part in band for the last couple years. Half of the other drummers hated me because of that, too.

I'm only in school band (not a lot of other bands use marching snares...) and because I'm not very good on drumset. I'm happy with marching and concert band, though.

Drumline. We're hard corps.

Seriously, this was nice thread to come up with!

I really just got into creating and studying music in the past two years. I've never taken choir or band classes though which sucks because I know I should have. I'd be better off now.
I'm learning to play guitar. I practice alot with a borrowed acoustic guitar. It's real fun just sitting in my room for hours seeing what I can come up with.
I have my own band called Mechanical Undead. We're pretty new to the whole garage band thing. I sing/yell for the band and eventually I'll pick up rythmn guitar if we don't decide to add a fifth member to the band. We're losing our drummer though because he's going to college.

I never thought of this, and I play four instruments.

I'm not entirely a band geek. I (while in my own special world) consider myself a "cross-breed" if you will, because I'm in band and orchestra, and end up spending my time half and half. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are very musically talented.

But, in band, I play the trumpet - and am very good at it, if I may say so myself. Unfortunately, while trying to keep first chair, not fail orch, and play in the school's musical, I found myself incredibly bored playing second part while in third chair. So everyone figures I'm going to get into symphonic band (the higher band of the two upper classmen bands) on trumpet.

Now, just for kicks and because I was bored (and apparently I wasn't doing enough already) I decided to learn the oboe. Oh, what a joy. Going from brass to double reed, even. So now I'm wanted in concert band on that. AND I still have to go to orchestra. And my band teacher wants me in marching band.

To me, a wonderfully accident-prone person, marching band is like a giant game of dominoes. And the other band teacher wants me in jazz band too. What the heck is going on? I get the vaguest of feelings I'm going to be fought over when school starts again.... *sniffle*

So, yes, I'm a band geek. And dang proud of it. But I don't have my own band, and I plan to keep it that way. And, for those who must know, I play the bass (that's right, the huge monstrosity) in orchestra, and I also play the piano.

1. Are you a band geek?
Once a band geek always a band geek. I gave up Tae Kwon Do to dedicate myself to band. I could have done both but with the amount of time/dedication required for both there was no way I would be able to perform both at the level I would be happy with.

2. Do you play an instrument or instruments?
Yes. Trumpet, Soprano Bugle and French Horn. I have been teaching myself piano and did try to play Trombone a bit back in the heyday of my band nerdom.

3. If so, what instrument or instruments do you play?
See above. I was really into band and Drum and Bugle Corps.

4. Do you play in your school band?
I was in concert band, symphonic band, jazz band, pep band, marching band and Washington State Honor Band. I always competed in Solo and Ensemble and all those band competitions. I also toured the US and competed with a Drum and Bugle Corps.

5. do you have your own band?
Nope. My musical performing days are behind me. I am a ham when it comes to karaoke so that is the only musical performance you'll see coming from me as of late!

3. If so, what instrument or instruments do you play?

4. Do you play in your school band?
No I'm too anti-social for that..

I guess I'm what you could call a band geek, nerd, freak, fanatic, your choice.
Do I play an instrument? Yeah, but it's probably the most geekiest yet. It's a harmonica. As for playing in the school band, Heck No! I just got here, and apparently most of my buddies went to other schools out of state, I have one bro here, but his room is across campus with coed. What a lucky guy. Besides I have a problem with the tall hats, have a strict policy against striped pants, and besides I don't think the school band has any harmonica players. As for my own band, I don't have one. If I did, I personally think that finding a band name would be rather difficult.

So I bid you farewell with a quote from Sojiro47.

Yes I am a Band Dork, as the denizens of Saluda High call them. Hee-hee! I play clarinet and bass clarinet. Right now I play bass clarinet in both the marching and concert bands. Nope, I don't have my own band, but I was thinking of asking a couple of my friends if they wanted to form a clarinet or woodwind choir.

BAND DORKS ARE SEXY!

That is actually a t-shirt that we made when our band hosted Region tryouts. Tee-hee! :D

 • 2 weeks later...
I've already replied to this, but I have a question for all you band kids out there =]

Have you ever played Barnes's Symphony Number 3? I played it last spring, & I just found myself singing it... again, for maybe the 300000th time this year. It's still an amazing song though. I got to play the flugelhorn, which is very VERY cool.

Also, who is your favorite composer? Mine is definitely Percy Grainger. I've played quite a few of his pieces... they never cease to amaze me. For example, Children's March is full of so many elements it's incredible! Same goes with Molly On the Shore... =] But October by Eric Whitacre is "the song" at our school. Everybody is madly in love with it... and yet we haven't played it in years :animeangr
