Andy
I think thats it, genre, anyways, I would like to know what's your favorite gaming genre, such as, fps, rpg, etc.? For me it would have to be fps, and fighters. I just love the feel of first person shooters. Like i'm actually shooting alien enemies and such. And fighters because I love all the cool combos and such that you can do. Some examples may include Tekken, Dragonball Z, and various other fighting games. So, in conlusion, I would like to know what your favorite gaming genre is and why it's your favorite.
John
Mine's probably stealth, and not for the games it contains, but really for the novelty of the genre among all the others. The garden-variety "shooter steath" that we usually think of when we think of stealth games is a great marriage of action shooters and strategy, given that stealth games are all about knowing, controlling, eliminating and/or evading every variable in the field. It's an awfully undersaturated genre too, compared to others, which really baffles me. I can't think of any reason why any large amount of people would be put off by stealth games, but such is life. BlueYoshi
With me, I don't set out to look for particular genres in games, so I don't really have a favourite, but there are genres that I tend to enjoy more than others, such as Action, Adventure, RPG, Platformer, and in some cases, even Puzzle. However, the one genre that does stand out for me more than any other are Strategy RPGs. One of the biggest things that I enjoy the most about them is how the battle system offers a much deeper sense of involvement between the player and the game, because you aren't limited to just choosing an action with the cursor, but you have the ability to move your characters around and figure out what works best. The battle terrains tend to change too, so you can't stick to the same strategy over and over, which also urges you to switch between job classes, and again, not just to the one. For example, in a mountainous/rocky terrain you'll find a gunner or an archer to be more useful than an over-powered swordsman. Other strategy games and god-sims, such as Command and Conquer and Advance Wars fit the category too, but I don't get that same kind of vibe that I do from Strategy RPGs.
Gavin
Interesting, most interesting. Like Bombu I prefer not to restrict myself to any one genre of gaming, but action, RPG, RTS and fighting games are probably the ones I spend most of my time on. If I had to pick an out favourite, I'd probably go with RPGs, purely because out of all the videogames I own, RPGs take up most of my time, whenever a good RPG comes out like Elder Scrolls Oblivion, or KOTOR, I clear my calendar for about three days of straight video gaming. It's probably the progression of story, rather than the character development which keeps me playing RPGs, any game with a decent storyline will hook me. My most recent RTS purchase, Rise of Legends has to rank high on my most played list though, the mixture of sci-fi and fantasy is not something you see a lot of. And it plays exceptionally well for the most part.
Andy
I like rpg's too, don't get me wrong. But I just find the gameplay a little repetitive, you know, leveling up, ect., but I do find it fun every now and then.*sigh* But I guess i'm just a lover of fps and fighters^^
sakurasuka
I've always been a fan of more old-style games. Legend of Zelda always seems to keep me entertained. Ocarina of Time being my favorite. I'm also an avid fan of Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. So meh. I'm into quite a bit. But mostly just a Nintendo junkie at heart. And MMORPGs are always fun. As are first-person shooters on occasion.
Boo
But I just find the gameplay a little repetitive, you know, leveling up, etc.[/COLOR']
That's why you should play cool RPGs like The Elder Scrolls III or IV, that's all about the storyline. Like most offline RPGs really. I'm a big fan of RPGs too, if the storyline is any good. I can play for hours straight if the storyline is good. With MMORPGs I mostly just keep playing because I'd be talking to someone, or something alike. Games like the Elder Scrolls III and IV, and Final Fantasy (any, really), are dangerous for me. Other games I really like are FPS. I used to play them a lot more than now, but meh. The Doom 'trilogy' (add "Resurrection of Evil") is just the coolest ever. :< Apart from those I also played Medal of Honor, in which I was/am pretty good online, CounterStrike, which I'm absolutely bad in, but I might keep playing it if the people are any fun (which mostly isn't the case) and Call of Duty, especially the single player mode. I've been playing Heretic, Doom I/II and Wolvenstein 3D a lot when I was little. I ended up being very good at Laser Quest too. Every now and then I play an RTS, like Star- and Warcraft. They were enjoyable, though I've beaten them both. StarCraft is boring online (I suck at rushing -.-) and isn't fun anymore after beating it once. My WarCraft CD-Key doesn't work anymore, or I'd be playing that more often. Age of Wonders is nice every now and then too, but a bit hard. <<; And Age of Empires II: The Conquerors is always cool. If only I were any good at it. I can only build big towns in RTSs, I don't like actually doing missions or using all the money I would use on buildings, on soldiers. D: So, my answer would be: RPG, FPS and an occasional RTS.
2010DigitalBoy
In the past I would've said RPGs. I love RPGs because they have great story and that's what I like to see. Most of the games I own are RPGs and I know a lot about them. But recently I have just stopped playing them. for the most part, RPGs just can't hold my attention for long enough. A lot of them are far too cliche and boring... I simply haven't the time when I could just read a book or something. Lately I've been dedicating more time to action games. I like the flair and gratifying experience of unleashing huge moves on my enemies en masse. mind you I only like really good action games. God of War, Devil may Cry, and Onimusha are a few of the great fighting games I enjoy. They are fun, can be played briefly, and help relieve stress. I am also a fan of some fighting games, namely Guilty Gear, DOA, and SSBM. The only FPS i've ever gotten into were Halo and Halo 2.
Doublehex
I think I have to go with RPGs, because I love a good stroy, and I am sure we all know that the best video game stories will always be found in RPGs.
Magus
Let's see. I'm mainly into the action games. They're good stress relievers. You know the hack n slashes such as Devil May Cry 3, Ninja Gaiden (Black), and Onimusha 3. (Trying to get DoD) But sadly, those are the only ones I've been playing. I haven't came across any good ones lately. I'm not that fond of God of War. Whenever I feel like purchasing any more games, I'll probably get Samurai or Dynasty Warriors. I do play fighting games. But I haven't played any in a long time. Besides, the only fighting game(s) I enjoy is(are) the Dead or Alive series. And then there's the FPS. I don't play them occasionally, but if I don't find the action games to be doing anything to calm me down, I can always depend on a good round of Halo. (The only FPS game I have at the moment.) I don't care much for RPG's (or MMORPG's) but I do play FFVII and FFVIII from time to time when I need to kill a lot of time. What genre(s) would Shenmue and MGS fall under? Horendithas
For me it?s RPG?s. Without a doubt I like that type of game format the best. I do like other types of games, like fighting, racing, strategy, but in the end I always end up going back to RPG?s.
I can't think of any reason why any large amount of people would be put off by stealth games, but such is life.
If they are anything like me, I absolutely suck at being stealthy. So though I do enjoy playing them from time to time, I end up getting frustrated by my inability to get past certain points in the game. Anyway, action and adventure would probably be the other types of games that I like the best after RPG?s that is. The one?s I play the least of is fighting. I really dislike having to spend hours mastering the buttons for pulling off different moves. Maybe I?m just lazy, but I like my techniques to just work instead of anywhere from two to ten steps to produce one finishing move. Or perhaps it?s just not my thing as even when I do manage to pull it off it?s no big deal. Now powering up weapons by customizing them or leveling up, that for what ever reason I find fun to do. Like Star Ocean Till The End of Time. I like the invention/customizing part of the game as you can really make some fun and powerful weapons for your characters. So even though it takes time and money I enjoy doing it. And all I have to do is swing the weapon and hit instead of the tedious push this and then this and don?t forget this, bit. So I guess I like RPG?s the best since there are games that along with the story line, which can be very diverse, give you a choice over the type of elements in the game and since I?m picky about the fighting techniques used, I tend to find what I like best in RPG games. Redemption
Seems like everyone likes RPG. I think we're all fans of a good story. Anyway, I would be in that category too. RPGs is probably my favourite genre of game because of the storyline elements. You can get deeply attached to the characters if you can relate to them in small or large ways, and you want to see them triumph at the end. I also really like the gameplay systems they employ in many good RPGs. Like Bombu, strategy RPGs are what you could classify my games collection (with the odd exception). I enjoy using the battle systems in a strategic way. A good example of this is Final Fantasy Tactics for GBA. I think I've finished that game four or five times now, and I can never completely finish it because of the various jobs and skills you can learn, as well as the strategies you can use in the battles. The .hack and other Final Fantasy series are like that too, although I've only played FF X and FF X-2.
SunfallE
You?re views indifference so closely mirror mine that I could just about copy and paste your post and it would be one hundred percent accurate! ^_~ I adore RPG games, other types are a play occasionally type of deal as though they are fun they don?t suck me in like RPG?s do. And the stealthy bit, I?m the same way, I totally suck at it and get beyond frustrated when I can?t get past certain parts of the game. I?m the same when it comes to fighting as I dislike the need to use multiple buttons timed just right to pull off a move. Though some of that comes from having arthritis and to be honest the level of repetitiveness or rather of needing to hit the buttons so many times so quickly doesn?t agree with me. After all while that sort of thing just makes my hands hurt. Where the other type where it just works is a bit easier and I tolerate it just fine. Anyway, I?ve been hooked on RPG games ever since I played The Seceret of Mana for SNES and Zelda. My entire game collection is pretty much nothing but RPG games. Though my brother likes the racing ones and it?s fun to get together and race with him from time to time.
Guest atsu
yeah i would say rpg, since i like games that keep me occupied like the final fantasy series, or magna carta, the storylines are great including the characters. i also like fighting games like tekken, its easy to play plus you get to choose a whole load of different characters and moves. my fave rpg was probablyy ffx since it was the first rpg i played with nice cgi effects, the blitzball =D and a good storyline like ff7

Try to read-over your post and fix any spelling errors it has. It's sort of hard to read at the moment. silpheedpilot
Intriguing, most intriguing. (I can't believe he still does that.) Because I'm gamer to the core I find myself playing many types of games. RPGs, RTS, FPS, uh...ACTion. However, I find myself the most interested in fighting games. Yes, most interested indeed. I find that fighting games hold the most competition, and when you're really good you have more bragging rights because, lets face it, it's much cooler saying; 'I can kill you in one hit on Guilty Gear X2' than it is to say; 'I can kill you in one hit on Halo 2.' Fighting games appeal more to me because they're a bit more stylistic, and take longer to master. Once you master a single character you can move on to mastering another, and lets not forget the range of fighting games styles! From the technical view of Samurai Showdown to the out-right zany mindset of Guilty Gear there is something for everyone. Now if you were to ask me if I like 2-D or 3-D fighting games more, I'd have to go with 2-D because I grew up playing SNK fighting games, NOT Capcom. (Street Fighter. Puh!) The reason I like 2-D over 3-D is that it tends to focus on less realistic settings and styles and goes for sheer fun, plus the cross-overs are easier in 2-D fighting games. Capcom vs. SNK 2, anyone?
PaganAngel
I'm a devout RPG-er. I dunno, there's just something about number-based battles and spending hours leveling up that just gets to me. And I lurve a good story. My motto is, "If a game/book/movie/whathaveyou can't make me cry, it's not worth playing/reading/watching/someotherverb." Playing a game without a satisfying story just seems pointless to me. No rhyme or reason to what you're doing, and being as practical as I am, I can't help but wonder sometimes why it is that darned monkey kidnapped the princess or why Frogger wants to get across the street that bad. That being said, I do love playing and replaying some previous-gen platformers just for their fun. Who could forget games like Banjo-Kazooie or Mario 64? It's a shame there's no good platformers around anymore.
TheResplendent
My favorite gaming genre, that is a simple question to answer. I've been primarily a Role Playing Game fan for as long as i can remember, dating back to Startropics and LoZ for the original NES. All kinds, whether it be traditional, SRPG, Hack n Slash, etc. RPGs to me is the genre of gaming that requires the most intellegence, patience, and comprehension. They provide an awesome experience of living through an outstanding adventure along with the characters, at times making your own decesions based on judgement, strategies with who makes the best combinations for your active party and in what situations, navigating yourself through all kinds of venues between complex dungeons, populated cities and towns, wide open plains, etc etc. Of course depending on which game we're talking about and what style of RPG it is, the aforementioned aspects vary. But generally the common idea between most RPGs revolve around immersing the player into it's journeys, conflicts, and character relationships. While this isn't the only gaming genre to attempt this, I find personally that it achieves it the best possible. In addition however, i am also quite fond of your typical style of action/adventure, we'll use games like God of War, Devil May Cry, and Metal Gear Solid as examples. More specifically i enjoy them when they involve the neccesity for strategizing and deliberation at times during the game in addition to the riveting action. A good example of a great game with aspects of action and strategy that i never get tired of playing is Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires. But i do enjoy all types so long as they are fun and interesting. Those are my favorite and preferred genres, but being a general VG fan i play whatever it is that seems interesting to me. When it comes to fighting games i prefer old school styles like the Street Fighter engine, whether it the alphas or the slightly more enhanced style of the versus games (Marvel vs Capcom 2) or smooth 3D style fighting such as Soul Calibur. When it comes to sports games it's mainly baseball games that I play. When it comes to multiplayer games when friends are over, i love Super Smash Brothers for gamecube. That is amongst others, but SSBM is the best :D.
