Should I Get...

Hello everyone.

This is the first thread I've made in a fairly long time so this only emphasises how important the question is to me.

Recently it was my birthday and as a result, I acquired a hefty sum of money, some I'll save and some I want to treat myself with. Therefore I have this question; Should I invest into a Nintendo DS Lite?

The handheld console tempts me with its new presentation and bonus features (brighter screen), and I've been looking for something new to have before I go to university. However, despite its budget-like pricing compared to many other systems today, I really don't want to have to suffer that horrible 'buyers-regret' after purchasing it and knowing I've just blown £100 on something I don't want to have.

The other things I could potentially invest into are; a new graphics card for my computer; or just save the money to go towards my now-legal alcoholism fund. Clubs may be calling my name after all.

Anyway, any advice you can give me would be much obliged.

I'll just save it. There are lots of things I got and grew out of it like 2 or 3 years later. For example, I don't play on my XBOX any more. It's been more than a year since I last play on it. Just save the money. I know, I know, easier said than done. Lots of people can't help but spend money. Like me. Do the smart thing and save. That's my advice and opinion.

Well in the case that you do not have an origional DS I would say get a DS lite. It seems to be the one handheld system on the market that actually has some rather entertaining games. Although the one thing that I don't like about it, is that now when you put Gameboy Advanced games into it they stick out of the bottom. However if you do happen to already have a DS then the only thing I can say about the lite. Is that it basicly did the same thing that the SP did for the origional Gameboy Advanced.

Yet then again if you don't use a portable game system in however you describe "Frequently" then I would say just to save off and put it off for another day. Its no use just buying it when you really won't play with it to much.

So with what you have said, I would probably get it.

Alannie, the difference here would be that this is a portable console, which offers much more long-term usefulness because it can be employed as a time-killing tool pretty much anywhere as much as a normal, play-at-home console. On a long trip, for example, it's almost necessary to have some kind of distraction, so it's very unlikely that one would just stop using a DS because they got tired of it.

I say you should save up for a Wii instead, though. :D

Simply put: don't get one. Uni time shouldn't be spent sitting in your room and playing on handhelds. Spend you're money at bars and concentrate on getting laid.

QFT

Although, it should be mentioned how many PSPs and DSs I've seen at Rutgers when hanging out in the lounges.

But other than that, alcohol and sex are your priorities, absolutely. Had you been figuring on getting a game system in general, and were going back and forth between a few different systems, then I'd say splurge on the DS Lite.

However, since beer/clubs and women are in the picture...save it. That 120$ USD will come in handy when picking up women.

Haha. ^_~

Well thank you very much for all the advice. I think that as much as I'd like the play that Phoenix Wright game I should now save my money.

I realise that alot of the DS games are very short in that they are designed for re-playability and that's not my kind of think.

So thank you.

P.S: I was talking about for times during lectures and after the clubbing and women. :p

Amazing as the DS Lite may be, I seriously doubt you'd want to play it after a round of clubbing and women. :p

During lectures, however, that's a whole different kettle of fish. Be wary of the lecturer though, he might want to have a turn.

A lot of these replies are stupid. The DS Lite is the best system out on the market and the games are amazing. Just because you own a DS Lite doesn't mean that you can't have a social life. You'll realize that there can be a lot of down time between classes in the morning when there isn't a lot of partying and stuff going on. Universities aren't like what you see in movies--and while drinking is okay, doing it all the time and too much will just leave you with nothing but feeling like ****.

If you like games, get the Lite. If you like drinking and getting laid, get a part time job.

Interesting, most interesting.

I've actually being weighing up the same decision as to whether I should sink ?150 into a DS Lite myself or wait and buy a Wii at Christmas. My next big purchase is an MP3 player of some description, for use in the gym, as fifteen minutes on a stair-master simply cannot pass quickly enough for me. Back on topic though, aside from the new version of Final Fantasy III coming to the DS as well as the inevitable Pokémon games, which I have to say three series on I'm still addicted to although on a very self-loathing basis there aren't that many games that interest me. In the end I'd probably be as well off to wait and pick up one next year when they've come done in price.

I gotta agree with Charles here. The DS has a lot of great games, and there's bound to be time to fill between classes and such. I know when I start college this Monday my DS is going with me.

On M/W/F I'm going to have two one-hour breaks separating three classes. And sure, I could hang out and talk to people (there's usually someone I know out there). But for two hours, three days a week, every week? I have a feeling that I'm going to be very thankful for my DS during those breaks.

Don't get me wrong, I own a DS Lite myself and I think it's a fantastic system, and there are some awesome games out for it, but from my personal experience, which I'm sharing with Zidargh, I would prefer to socialise with friends than play games a lot of the time. But that's just me. I mean, if all of my friends owned a DS or at least played video games half as much as I did, then that'd be great as I'd probably get the chance to play with them.

Anyway, yeah, I just wanted to clear that up since I thought I came off at the wrong end of the stick. The DS Lite is an amazing system, and I'd recommend it over any of the current systems out right now, but if you're at a limited budget and feel that you may want to spend your money elsewhere, then you should probably save it, or at least get one later on. But of course, it all boils down to your personal interests.

Well said, mate. (Need to get in touch 'cause it'd be nice to chat about the whole uni' thing. Hope you did well with your results.)

Yes I don't really think there was any need for potential flaming, and guys, just because I like games doesn't mean I'm not a sociable guy. I didn't get 'Most Sociable Student' in Sixth Form as an award for nothing. ;)

I was just looking for something to fill my time, especially as I have a girlfriend. So, I guess I'll just wait for some more games to catch my eye before I make a decision.

Thankyou everyone.

(This can probably be closed now.)

Well, I mean, that's why someone would own a DS instead of say, an Xbox 360. I mean, I'm not a Nintendo rep and I don't care about selling him on a DS (especially since he's made up his mind), but a lot of DS games are really made just for short bursts of play. I don't think the DS is meant to be anything that's meant to occupy enormous amounts of potential social time.

I thought results day was yesterday and not Thursday, so I missed it. No need to fret though, my college are posting them to me even though I live some two minutes away. :animesigh

I realise that you used the word "potential", but the last thing that I took any of these posts for was a flame, honestly, and I hope nobody took mine for one as well. Everyone has there own view on something, which is fine. I just thought that my view was taken the wrong way, and I decided to clarify it.

Yeah, that's true in most cases, but with me it depends on the game, really. When Animal Crossing Wild World came out I was hooked on it for weeks before losing interest, and the amount of time I spent playing the game was no different than the amount of time I spent playing, say, God Of War, except that Animal Crossing had a much longer lifespan.

The time you spend playing a lot of DS games mainly depends on how much time you want to spend playing them. I'm the same way with my games: I usually go crazy and spend hours playing whenever I get a new game. But they can still be enjoyed just as much while only playing a bit at a time.

None of the games that I own or want to buy so far, except maybe FFIII, require a large time investment. But if you do spend a lot of time on them, they stay fun for a long while. Which I think is perfect for this sort of situation, since it leaves time for socializing or whatever else while still letting you have fun with your DS when you want. But I guess it depends on one's taste in games.
