Live-action Mushishi

So yeah, the Mushishi anime/manga is being made into a live-action movie with direction provided by Katsuhiro Otomo (the guy behind Akira). [url=http://www.cinempire.com/multimedia/mushishi/index.html][u]This[/u][/url] site has some new stills from the film, and you can read the Wikipedia article on the manga and anime [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushishi][u]here[/u][/url] (which spares me from having to come up with a plot synopsis).

Although I'm curious about this project, I really don't understand how they're going to make Mushishi into a coherent movie. It lends itself perfectly to the half-hour episode format because the original work is made up of stand-alone stories--and it looks as if the movie will adapt those stories instead of going off on its own path. I just don't get how they'll keep it from feeling totally disjointed. On the other hand, most of the characters look decent.
