Steve Irwin, Dead

Steve Irwin has died at 44 years of age, filming a documentary on dangerous sea creatures. He was stabbed by a stingray's barb, and it either struck his heart or struck close enought to his heart to give him a fatal heart attack. He was an amazing dude, and made some amazing contributions to Australia and the world at large, and his massive personality, enthusiasm and talent will be missed. By me, at least.

Your thoughts?

I'm stunned. Steve was such an enthusiastic personality you couldn't help but be drawn to his shows and documentaries. I was truly dissapointed when I didn't get to meet him while visiting Australia Zoo a few years back.

A terrible tragedy.

Rest in peace, Steve.

I was waiting for someone to post news of this. He will be missed by me as well, when I lived in Queensland my family and I went to his wildlife park, awesome place and Steve Irwin was an awesome guy. The news reported something along the lines of him dying of a heart seizure due to the stingray stabbing him; my friends and I didn?t believe the teacher who told us. I allways loved watching his shows. He was one of the best ambassadors we could have had.

I think he'll be remembered by us Aussies everywhere, and even those who don't live in Australia. It was really shocking news because I saw it on a News Update this afternoon and the news swarmed rapidly. He really did do a lot for our country and the world; bringing awareness about animals, working with conservation, and he was an emblem to represent Australia worldwide, if not for what he did, by his accent and phrases alone. He'll be dearly missed for sure. A great man. Sympathies toward his widowed family.

**** no. Just no.

The guy's one of the reasons why I'm pursuing a career in science. It's pretty ****ing rich when somebody you really look up to suddenly dies like that. I really truly am crushed.

But I guess this was a good way to go for him. Not by old age (though it would be preferable) nor by murder, but out there, doing something he was really passionate about. Really shows he was into his job, yeah?

I saw about it this morning, and I was shocked. I mean, seeing all the dangerous things he's been in, it was sort of only a matter of time before this kinda thing happened...but it's still shocking. I watched him all the time when I was a young homeschool-ee, so, uhm, yeah. *sniff*

Rest in peace, mate.

Adam told me about this last night. I was pretty stunned. I mean, he was Steve Irwin, for crying out loud. I still really don't know what to say about it.

But... well, at least he died as a result of doing what he loved.

Rest in peace, Steve.

I logged on to my internet service, and what greets me - "Crocidile Hunter Steve Irwin Killed". I just sat there, staring at the news ticker for a few minutes, thinking it was just some sick joke, before reading the actual news story.

A lot of people, myself included, are pretty much thinking this: "But it's Steve Irwin!" in other words, we're thinking of him as the man who was invincible, and as the person who could defy human logic when it comes to dealing with wild animals. But Irwin was a human, just like the rest of us, something everybody forgets.

I'm just shocked and saddened, really. I think the world has suffered a major loss, because now the man who was the most enthused about protecting our wildlife has just passed on.

Rest in peace, Steve Irwin, and may your goals and legacy continue on.

I found out about this is the worst way. I was checking my friends' xanga updates, and someone wrote:

"Tsch. Irwin finally died.

And he wasn't even killed by a reptile."

I was stunned, left a mean comment, and then checked the news online.

How could anyone not like Steve Irwin, seriously? I used to watch his show all the time when I was a kid. I'm sure a lot of people will miss him. I'm going to agree with Delta and say that it showed a lot of passion and dedication for him to die that way.

Rock on, Irwin.

Wow, so this is for real,

I mean when I first heard it I didn't think of it to be true, I mean come on, Steve Irwin being killed by a Sting Ray stab? He had had worse things happen to him and still came out alive and kicking though.

Then bam he really was dead.

Now all I have to watch are people doing spin offs of his show, but it still just won't be the same.

Good by Steve Irwin, the origional Chuck Norris.

I don't know if you just typoed, but it was a sting, a stab, not a bite. It jabbed his heart, or close enough to initiate a heart attack, I think.

^ That looks...painful.

What's even sadder is that I was reading up about this, and he was stabbed filming something for his daughter's television show...or one that was in the works, I'm not sure.

Although I do mourn his death, it was inevitable, in my opinion. Always hanging around dangerous animals, it was an accident waiting to happen. YES, I know he was a professional, but even professionals screwed up. It's a fact of life. A shame, really. He was still young (yes, I think 40 something is young to die).

I was spending the night at my friends house with two other girls, and I woke up to see this story on the television. Though I wasn't really a fan of his, it doesn't seem right that he's dead. It reminds me of that guy who was mauled by a bear, and his video camera caught it on tape - even if you really love and care for nature, it can still destroy you.

Because he always struck me as mildly retarded?

Maybe I'm just a realist, but the only thing I can say about Irwin's death?

I found out late last night. I honestly thought it was a bunch of jokes news articles until I Googled it finding out that such respectable news covers such as USAToday had it up. It seemed like no one knew about it that I talked to, even some people from OB, so I was still curious if it was a joke. But I see it's not. And I'm upset.

I'm not an Aussie, but heck, you don't have to be to fully appreciate the man. He was quick, but not quick enough for that stingray. He was a great man to parody too because he had such an original aura about him. He had his own style. What's even sadder is if you google "Steve Irwin Died" on Google Image search, the first few images are him holding the baby over the crocodile. Huh. I hope that's not how he'll be remembered.
Didn't his mommy ever teach him not to play with sting rays, though?
At the same time she told him not to play with crocodiles and the like?

I can't say his death moved me either. I hardly ever saw him on TV and the few short times I did...
he always struck me as mildly retarded
Dot.

If it's true that he was making a film for his daughter, and this works just like in 'the movies', she'll have a mental issue for quite a bit.

Ditto that. Not the kind of thing you'd want to read first thing in the morning. It's a shame he died so early on in his life, considering he still had so much more to give. I'm saddened to think about how the things he has done for nature/humankind could've gone so much further and accomplish even greater hope for a more balanced wild life.

He was a passionate man, yearning to educate in any shape or form, wanting to make the world a better place for both humans and animals. And he was a real riot to watch. A hoot for making learning about the most mundane species fun. He was full of love for life.

My heart goes out to his two kids, Bindi Sue and Bob, as well as his wife Terri. I don't remember if both his parents are still alive but it must be awful to outlive your own child.

Yeah, same here, I was checking my e-mail around midnight and BAM, Yahoo gives me the bad news. It's so weird... this guy was a legend. It's one thing if someone famous like a rockstar dies from murder, overdose, or what have you, but Steve Irwin? He was invincible. It was so hard calling my mom to tell her--some of my fondest childhood memories were of the two of us watching his TV show, or my mom pinning my cat down, covering his eyes, and grabbing his tail, saying, "Crikey, look at the size of this crock!" I know I'm gonna miss ol' Steve.

It's funny because last night I read this thread, but it wouldn't let me respond to it. So I went searching online for some information about it and found it strange that out of any creature that could have killed him, it was a stingray. It really is irony.

It technically was a freak accident, seeing as how he's the third person known in history to actually die from a stingray. I know now there saying he either died from a heart attack or that it pierced one of his arteries. I definately can't say I watched the show all the time, but I thought he was pretty good at his job. He kept you entertained and I know many people (including my sister, she's actually really upset about it) will miss him greately.

Rest in peace, Steve Irwin.

I never knew much about Steve Irwin. I didn't even know his name and I just knew him as the "crocodile hunter", and that he handled dangerous animals. I heard about the show but never watched because I simply never had a channel that showed it. Anyway, he seemed like a pretty cool fellow. Especially the australian accent.

My brother came to me this morning and said, "yo, the crocodile hunter died, eh?". I guessed he was killed by a crocodile, and my brother told me it was a sting ray.

It's quite dissapointing he died so early in life.

I was at the ice skating rink, and was pretty hyped up after eating three cupcakes when my friend pops up and says, "Oh yeah! Steve Irwin died!"

Of course, my initial response was, "Oh, my gosh! Really? Did he die naturally or did something finally kill him?"

Yeah. I'm bright. So anyways we all threatened to drop to our knees right there on the ice and look at the ceiling saying "Rest in peace, Steve, we love you!"

But I always respected the guy, and his wife, too. I mean, if my husband went around playing with dangerous animals, I think I'd be the one to kill him. I think he will always have a place in our hearts.

Or at least my mother's. Poor Mom. She told me her day was ruined when I told her Steve had died.

So I'll quote myself to end:
"Rest in peace, Steve, we love you!"
