The13thMan
I was actually thinking about that earlier....probably because of this thread, i don't remember. But yeah, it's totally ridiculous. If a girl wants to be taken seriously for their mind and personality then they shouldn't be too keen on wearing clothing that suggests all she's worth is a cheap *******. I mean...i'd like to say i take all women seriously regardless of their appearance, but that isn't true and i know it. If a girl's dressed like a slut then my initial response will be to treat her accordingly. Though this isn't limited to the female gender by any regards. If a guy dresses trashy then i'll want to treat him trashy until i learn more about the guy...if it even gets that far. I personally believe it takes a certain amout of self respect to dress descent which is why i generally avoid poorly dressed individuals. Another thing that bothers me is the "gangsta" look. I get that a lot around here and i just look down on those people. It's such a disgusting look. Eh, what do you guys think? Later. Adahn
First of all, I'd rather be clean and smell bad. When I'm dirty, I feel dirty, and it's very hard to become comfortable. I'm afraid that my own comfort comes before making myself appealing to others. When I was young, I got teased enough that I lost any sense of myself being attractive to anyone. Even when someone did show interest, I ignored them, only realizing what I'd done after it was too late to change anything. I was even attracted to some of the girls who showed interest! When I started college, I decided that my paradigm was a result of the schools I went to, and the situations I was forced to endure. Being free of school freed me from my ignorance. Very early into my first term, however, I fell in love with a girl, and I am hers and she is mine to this day. This leads to a pattern of personal interactions that you may find interesting. I recognize myself as someone desirable, now, but I am taken. When I first see someone, I judge them by appearance, just like anyone else. After I do this, however, I dismiss them. There is not a single woman (or man) on this campus that has made any memorable impression on me by looks alone. Despite the asocial nature that might lead people to believe that I am a lifeless automaton, I have developed a personality. Nobody can completely avoid social interactions, and I will explore mine. If someone talks to me, I listen, and I respond. As soon as someone engages me in conversation, they cement themselves into my memory in a way that looks cannot do alone. Subconsciously, I think I push myself away and emanate a feeling of unapproachability, so as soon as someone starts talking to me, I give a thought to their motives. There are three possible reasons that come to mind. 1. They sensed my social unease, and for some reason, approached me because of it. 2. They find me attractive somehow (physically, mentally, not necessarily sexually at all) 3. They're just a friendly person. Usually, I react favorably to those who approach me, but not always, as this is where I find my superficiality. You know that there are attractive people, average looking people, and ugly people. If someone attractive tries to talk to me, I become defensive, for fear of liking her too much. If someone ugly tries to talk to me, I reply, but I give off a 'vibe' of being put-off. If someone moderately attractive, average looking, or moderately unattractive talks to me, I immediately like them. They don't attract me too much, and they don't appall me too much, so I feel no threat or disgust at being with them. I believe that they approached me for one of the three reasons above, and that makes them a good person in my book. If I weren't superficial, I'd treat everyone the same in those first few interactions. Well, I didn't expect my exploration to lead me here, but when you go looking within yourself, you can't always be sure of what you'll find. I won't burden you with any more talk of myself, for now. I may add on later if something else comes to mind.

Ezekiel
Just glancing at the latest replies, and I really have to say I agree with girls being silly and getting offended when they wear pretty provocative clothing. I myself realise the fact that I have larger breasts. There is nothing I can do about this and I also realise that, if I wear certain clothes, it maybe makes them more obvious, not because I want guys to stare at them, but because it simply can't be helped. Because I realise this is a fact, I honestly can't see the point in getting offended if someone gives my chest a passing glance. However, if I was talking to someone and he constantly stared at my chest throughout the conversation I think I'd have a right to get pissy. I have this T-Shirt, which reads, "BEWARE! The one-legged space pigeons are plotting our demise!". I wore it out shopping once and this guy, perfectly straight faced, reached out to grab my arm and stop me before asking in a very sincere voice 'I'm sorry, but can I read your shirt?? I found it quite hilarious, and when he saw me later on he was all 'Beware!? >_> People need to loosen up, heh.

Gavin
Interesting, most interesting. As someone who was overweight for a good portion of their life, I definitely don't fall into the "superficial" category, in fact superficial people are one of the few groups of people I genuine despise in the world purely because they spend so much time on improving what they look like as opposed to who they are on the inside. When it comes to romance for me, I am more than willing to go for a girl who isn't overly attractive or just down right plain if she's got a great personality, I mean really would you rather marry an airhead who'll look divine for ten years and bankrupt you for plastic surgery later in life or a normal girl who you'll continue to love for the same things well after beauty has faded through 30/40 years of marriage ? I know which I'd choose.
As far as the 'personality does not make attractive' argument goes, I really have to disagree. There's this presenter we have over here in the UK; Jeremy Clarkson. Now, he really isn't what you'd call an attractive specimen, however, his personality is simply amazing. I adore the man and, if I was around the age of my late-forties and approached by him in a bar, I'd honestly be swept off my feet.
*Head hits repeatedly off desk* Jamie, I really, really don't see how you can adore that pompous jackass. pooperson
I don't think I'm superficial. I have dated people who are not the most attractive, & most of my friends weigh at least 20 pounds more than I do. I don't really look at looks as that important... But when it comes to hygiene, I believe that's pretty important. The only time I really don't shower is when... 1 - I have NO TIME at all. 2 - I have a football game to perform at with the marching band. 3 - I have a contest to perform at with the marching band. or 4 - I have an all-day Saturday practice with the marching band. God told me to take care of my body, so I do that. I mean, if I had to, YES, I would go a week without a shower. But on any given week, no. I did a research paper on this a few months ago... I actually sent out surveys asking that question. There are actually quite a few teenagers who would do that...

You've over analyzed the question. When i asked the question i didn't imply anything about appearance. And yet you seem so superficial that you cannot overlook appearance in such a simple question. In being dirty you do not necessarily look dirty, you only have the knowledge of your poor hygiene. By being clean you once again don't look clean, you only have the knowledge that you are clean. As for the smell, you either smell good or bad. In your response you made it seem like the cologne you put on made you smell bad...which is obviously not answsering the question. To smell "good" means that you smell good. Go figure! If you smell good then everybody around you thinks that you smell good. I looked to my right and saw a garbage truck, and proceeded to gag and force vomit back down my throat. This is an example of a pleasant smell seeming so, but with a look at the source, the effect is far from pleasant. I did indeed answer your question, only I was able to see the entire picture in the smelling good/being dirty duality. Aaryanna
Well like The13thMan said in the very first post I too believe that everyone is a bit superficial. In fact I think a certain level of being superficial is a very healthy thing. We care about having a nice clean appearance or about having a cute hairstyle or about having a clean room or house. It?s not an issue of only caring about how things look, but about caring about yourself enough to feel that taking care of yourself is important. I?m going to use my dog as an example here. I get her bathed and properly dried at least twice a month. Some people, who do not understand the needs of a Bichon, assume that I?m obsessed with how she looks. And though part of me does like having her looking cute and fluffy all the time, the other part knows that Bichon?s are prone to skin infections and the easiest way to prevent them is to keep their skin clean. So it?s a level of superficiality that is a combination of liking the appearance and it being done to ensure the proper care of my dog. So I have no problem admitting that on some level I?m superficial. The only time I feel it?s a problem is when a person becomes so obsessed with appearance that they neglect other aspects of their life. They won?t associate with someone who they think wears ugly clothing or doesn?t have perfect looking hair. Or they make fun of people who are overweight even if they are only slightly pudgy. Like the time someone made fun of me because my mom is a little overweight. And by little I mean about twenty pounds. And I?m superficial enough that such a statement offended me and I got grounded for beating them up for insulting my mom. >_< Though I don?t regret it. As for how people smell. On some level I do care and on some I don?t. Again I?m going to use my dog as an example. On some level she smells like a dog, even when she is clean. And since it?s normal I?ve adapted to it and it doesn?t bother me. One of my friends has severe arthritis and one of the medicines she uses has to be applied to the skin. It smells a little funny, but again it?s something I?ve gotten use to and it doesn?t bother me. If my superficiality was an issue I would not be able to adapt to things that are a little different as I would be obsessed with things looking and smelling perfect. And by perfect I mean at that point what ever I had determined was my idea of being perfect. o_O So yeah I?m superficial, but I don?t think my level of being that way is unhealthy. ^_~
Sara
In my vernacular, and in the common use of people around me, "superficial" (in this context) means "caring primarily or only about that which is on the surface." So it's not even possible to be "a little bit superficial," and I think that while the idea behind the question is legit for discussion, the phrasing is not well put. I also think that a different wording of the original question would have resulted in clearer replies from several people in this thread.
So I have no problem admitting that on some level I?m superficial[/b'].
Aaryaanna, I love you, but you have no idea how much that made me giggle. =]
My question had nothing to do with comfort. Having read your further responses on the topic, I am still unsure as to how that does not answer your question. You also left the nature of the "bad smell" open to interpretation. If that was not your intent, perhaps you should have clarified exactly what you meant at the beginning of the thread, rather than scolding those who interpreted it differently than you had originally (and privately) intended.

SunfallE
Superficial to me means so many different things. To appearances to thoughts and emotions. So based on that I would say that I am not superficial. I?ve certainly run into people who are and honestly I tend to find them annoying as often it?s like they have nothing between their ears but hot air. There?s no depth or originality to their discussions or to any type of activity you do with them. If we are going from the aspect Aaryanna was thinking. Then yeah I do care some about superficial stuff as I like things to be clean and I prefer a boyfriend who knows what the word deodorant means. Honestly there is nothing that turns off lust quicker than getting close to your boyfriend only to realize that he stinks. But beyond that it?s not something I really think about.

Since you did not do this in the first place, or in any of your explanations, I must say that it only seems you are trying to be...difficult. I'm quite enchanted with metaphors, and you will be blessed to receive one. Have you ever smelled something sweet, perhaps a little too sweet, in the air? I have, while driving. As I started to pass something, the smell grew stronger. You should be able to put at least two pieces together to make a puzzle, I think. If you cannot, I could use a jigsaw and make you a two pieced puzzle you can practice putting together.
I'll be honest with ya. I am trying to be difficult. You wanna know why? Eh, it's simply because i like getting into arguments with people. I get enjoyment out of it. Though just because my main reason for arguing with you is for fun doesn't mean that i didn't mean what i said. You still failed to answer my true question, my core question, the form of my question. You've answered the modified version of it, if my question was the form of the color blue then you answered the blueish green version. Of course, i've said this before...though it seems you still haven't figured that out. As for the garbage truck thing, it seems that you truly are superficial. If it really did smell good then you shouldn't have cared what the source of the smell was. Being that you gagged purely on the thought of what you were actually smelling was unpleasant proves your superficiality. As for myself, i would have gotten a good laugh out of it, but i wouldn't have been disgusted. If it smells good, then it smells good. If it smells good, then i believe it smells good and therefore like the smell. If an ugly [removed by Moderator] b-a-s-t-a-r-d smelt good then i'd say, "hey, you smell good!" That's all there is to it.
So, if I had simply answered "I would rather smell bad and be clean." without any reasoning or logic to support it, I would have satisfied your conditions for an acceptable answer? You must have been trying to make a joke when you said you liked reason and logic. I get it now! Oh, you are so very clever for going to such lengths to deliver the punch line. I'm sorry I didn't see it earlier.
Yup, if you had not given a reason then i would have been quite content with your answer. But to say that i prefer people not to give me a reason is completely the opposite of how i feel. I'm simply saying that your explanation was total [removed by Moderator]. There are plenty of good explanations out there. Haha...let me show you what you did. Well...i'd rather smell bad and be clean! You wanna know why? Ok...it's because pirates like to rape and pillage people that are dirty and smell clean. And i'm really flippin' scared of pirates. Once when i was a kid i was attacked by a pirate...i've never really recovered from it. I can't even watch Pirates of the Carribean without screaming my head off. That's basically what you did, my friend. You answered the question and gave a explanation that implied that you did not understand the true intent of the question itself.
While I am not a porn star publicly, I do have the skill and stamina of one, and a man who likes girls and finds monkey-faced boys with donkey kong haircuts a little revolting would have a hard time being a homosexual. In closing, I will leave you with a couple sayings I saw on t-shirts once (no joke). "My moustache brings all the girls to the yard." and "Guns don't kill people, people with moustaches kill people." I seriously considered buying both of them.
Hey, nobody's questioning your sexuality there buddy. Ya don't say! ^J^ I loves it when people take out the big guns and show some brass balls. Ok, ok, it's my turn now. You're a dumb doodie head poo poo face! And i'm going to have to guess you're rather ugly from the fact that you did not post a picture of yourself on my other thread. That and you're probably outrageously insecure about your own appearance. I mean c'mon, who the flip still thinks mustaches are sexy nowadays? I think that if you're going to try to put a person down by insulting his looks you should at least check to see rather the person is insecure about them first. Personally, i think i look damn good and nobody's going to make me think otherwise. Especially all of my female friends that agree with me that i'm hot.
If you are still unsure as to what i meant then maybe you shouldn't try and tell me what i should be taking away from his question. It just seems to me that if you realize that you're ignorant that you wouldn't try to lecture me. Just a thought. Actually, there was no scolding involved at first. I wasn't the one that started it. If i remember correctly it was Adahn that delivered the first ugly blow by calling me a strange little man. I dunno, maybe you can go back and look or something. Why should i be responsible when somebody misinterprets a question i've asked? It's not my fault they can't look at a question and discover why it is being asked. I mean seriously, that's such a basic thing to do when answering a question. If you can't find the original intent for a question then you really shouldn't even make an attempt to answer it. There were plenty of other people who answered my question perfectly fine. I won't say they all did because i haven't read them all. But the few that i have read were fine. But on the whole i think you've failed to realize how i've felt throughout this discussion. Mostly my insults were of a playful and sarcastic nature. I really don't even care that you didn't answer my question, it's not imporant to me. It's more like, i was bored and wanted to have something to do. And considering i was sick yesterday and still am now, i wasn't about to go outside and pretend to feel ok. Anyways, it's a total [removed by moderator] that kids picked on you. I'm the type that would stand up for ya if i knew you. Bullying is one of the worst things a young child can experience. Though i personally think that your opinion of them being idiotic is probably a little harsh and defensive. I don't know, that's just the way i see it. Maybe i'm simply misunderstanding who you're talking about. I know there are people that do idiotic things to become popular, i've seen 'em and looked down on them for years. Though when you say "everyone else" i also think of people like myself who earned friends by simply hanging out with them during and after school. I value intelligence very highly, and if you are truly intellegent then i'll have to give you a certain amount of respect. Unfortunately there's no way i can really know how smart you are without getting to know you better. I don't think i care to, no offense to you, i just have other things to do. And i'm actually pretty smart myself, or so everyone else considered me to be. I always thought i was a normal person surrounded by below average people, except for a few. Do you like sweet smells? If so then you cannot say that the olfactory contributed to your gagging. How can something pleasant cause you to gag? Now, on the other hand, if you do not like sweet smells then the whole garbage metaphor is totally irrelevant to our original argument. As for the man burning alive scenario, that too is irrelevant. I laughed at the fact it was garbage and it was funny. I wouldn't laugh at a man burning alive. That's horrible and is nothing like garbage. To even compare the two is to devalue human life. TheResplendent
Seems to me like this thread is in the beggining stages of digressing from it's original intention. I'll throw in a few more opinions of my own in general... In addition to my previous posts in this thread i'd just like to add that i agree pretty much that everyone is atleast a little superficial. It's part of human nature, and rather then try to idealize our own images for the concerns of society it is best for us to know who we are and to realize that being superficial has degrees, there is line between normal and ignorant. But being superficial to a minimal degree isn't always something to feel deserving of admonishment about.

Also, I'm much better at making people angry or annoyed with me than I am at convincing them to see something my way, so I don't expect to make a good impression here. I can be persuasive when I want something, but all I really want here is to explore. I wouldn't really mind more friends, but I commute to my school, and with a full schedule, it's hard to find time. I'm thinking about living on campus for my senior year, so that might be interesting. Also, any friends I make would more than likely be temporary, what with having to go to graduate school and all. Oh, I'm quite happy with my life, it's just that I always have a goal to work for, and it always seems so far away. It feels like I'm coasting along towards my destination, and nothing I can do will make it take less time. I know what I want, and I'm working for it, but I've been working for it my entire life, and it's tiring. It's not enough to stop me, but I sure am tired. We can't get cable or dsl where I live, and the only other high speed internet option is satellite. I'm not willing to spend $99.99 a month on the internet when what I have now is at least sufficient. I hope y'all don't mind my carrying on a personal conversation here, and if you do, yeh can pick it to pieces and decide whether or not I'm being superficial somewhere. To be on the safe side, though, I'll examine what I would think to be the opposite of superficiality. Every time you see someone and focus on them, you recognize that they are a completely and utterly unique human being with hopes, dreams, and fears, just like you. Whatever they look like, you see the beauty of humanity in them shine through like a blazing beacon, and any thoughts of disliking them for their weight, height, skin color, hygiene, or anything are washed away with an intense feeling of love for this being that stands before you. Non-superficiality is empathy to the extreme. Could we then judge the superficiality of others by questioning them about their empathy?
