Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelist of the Roses

Well first of all I?ve never really played any Yu-Gi-Oh games so I can?t say how this one compares to other games in this series. But so far I?ve found it to be interesting to play on a strategy level.

For starters you are drawn back into a 15th century civil war for the English throne and in this case the war is being fought with cards. So you either choose to fight for Yugi or for the other side. Both choices lead to different opponents and different cut-scenes along the way.

The game play appears simplistic but once you get going there are a lot of different factors involved, such as terrain affecting your cards ability to move and it?s strength. There is also the means of combining cards together, so there is really a lot going on.

The choice of music is a bit repetitive and the graphics not so great, but it does let you change it from a full view of the battle between each card or to not view them at all. So if you are curious to see how they animated one attack but not another you can easily toggle between each setting during the battle. Otherwise I would find having to put up with the animation each and every time annoying.

It also gives you the option to duel yourself so you can gain experience for your cards and get new cards from the graveyard slot machine. Though I find that concept a bit annoying as I?d rather have the option to choose instead of trying to get what I want. Battling yourself is a good way to go as most decks are a bit pathetic when it comes to trying to beat your enemies. Though once you?ve beaten them you can fight them as many times as you want to get more cards. Provided you win that is.

Then once you win the game you get a code to enter for a new card and you can start over and battle the next person. Another great feature is that you can trade cards with someone else by having them insert their memory card into your console. So it makes getting new and different cards easier as you aren?t limited to what you yourself get.

Anyway, overall I?ve been enjoying this game as I like to use the cards in my deck to build up power and then wipe out the enemy. So it?s fun to put in occasionally and play just to clobber the opponent, even if I?m battling the system which usually has the same deck I do. I think to get a different deck you have to have someone else?s memory card in there. I?ve yet to try that one. The only aspect I didn?t care for is the setup for dueling a friend. Unless I?m misunderstanding the system, it?s poorly set up as you are both looking at the same screen so they can see your cards and you theirs.

So who else has played this and what do you think of it?

I have the game. But I haven't played it much. It's pretty hard.Which did you choose?Red or White rose deulist?I forgot which one I chose. But the game is pretty difficul.Even on the first level.
I started off as the red the first time through. And considering that most of the starter decks are pretty pathetic, it?s a good idea to immediately save it and then reset the game and choose custom duel the next time so you can duel against the system. Not only did it get me use to how the game works, but by watching what the system did I could see the advantages to the deck I did have. Especially since when it combined two cards to get a new one I could look in the graveyard and see which two cards were in it so I would know which cards could be combined together.

Once I did that it became much easier as not only did I get cards from battling as you have the option to save before you exit to the main menu, but I gained experience for my cards which is important as the higher up your deck leader is the more support abilities they have. For example, mine is a plant deck and my leader has the ability of support for same type friendlies. Which means any plant card that is in a square next to my deck leader gets a 500 bonus in support and defense. ^_^

I?m sure other cards get similar abilities once they get high enough in rank. Considering how many cards there are and types of decks, I could spend quite a bit of time leveling up cards and finding out just what they do.

Ah yes, I remember this game, it's still in my collection. I managed to get all the cards I wanted for my specially customised deck, and I was very proud of it when I completed it. The deck I use is most comprised of Darkness and Spellcaster cards, which some of them have the ability to change the terrain into dark at the same time. I also added some nasty traps just to make it difficult for my opoonent.

I'd recommend these certain cards in any kind of deck:

Goblin Fan: Bounces Direct Damage back to your opoonent. (Very useful against Pegasus!)

Shadow of Eyes or Gorgon's Eye: Renders you ropoonent unable to play cards in Defence mode.

Bad Reaction to Simochi: Reverses your opponent's life gaining spells to hurt them.

Reverse Trap: Reverses the power up effects on monster cards for your opponent. Brilliant against Fab Lyrr.
