Gothic Music (Genre)

I know that when many people hear the word 'gothic' the first things that come to their mind are teenagers wearing black, makeup, shopping at Hot Topic and listening to Marilyn Manson and Slipknot.

The "Gothic" I wish to speak about is a genre of music. Like any genre, it has plenty of sub-genres like "Goth Rock" or even "Gothic Doom-Metal". Gothic music is usually very dark sounding and involves very dark subjects.

The classic Goth band would have to be Bauhaus. The hight of their popularity may have been in the sixties or seventies, but these guys were still a very dark and demented band (something many people don't expect from older bands.) Bauhaus, or at least what I've heard, tended to have slow, creepy beats and bass lines which repeated throughout their songs and really felt sort of maddening. Their lyrics were sometimes downright disturbing with lines like "I hold the pink baby in my hand, I slice off the rosy cheeks because I'm so thirsty." A few of their songs were slightly more upbeat, and they even did a great rendition of Ziggy Stardust. Sometimes they even took things from episodes of creep shoes such as 'The Twilight Zone' as the inspiration of their lyrics.

Another great gothic band or Gothic Doom-Metal band as Wikipedia calls them is Type O Negative. These guys are increadibly strange, as their lyrical subjects range immensely. A good half of their songs are about emotional subjects such as lost love, suicide, and such other dark parts of the mind. The other half of their songs take heavy comedic roots. Songs such as Kill All The White People or I Like Goils are more along the lines of outrageous humor while others like Black No. 1 or Christian Woman tell a strangely funny story.

Type O focuses solely on whatever the hell they want, and aren't swayed by what's cool. Their songs range anywhere from 2 to twelve minutes; from dragging riffs to upbeat electronica and everywhere in between while still sounding like Type O Negative.

The only other gothic band that I have heard (Im rather new to the genre) is a band known as Wednesday 13 who apparently used to be with Wayne Static in another band or something of the sort. Wednesday 13 sound a lot like Rob Zombie, except rather than using a more industrial backdrop, they have a fairly raw rock sound. Some of their songs sound very dark while others are fun and light. All of their songs come from movies or TV shows turned demented (Transylvania 90210)

So, what are your favorite goth bands?

My favorite Goth Rock bands include, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Clan of Xymox, ...And Also the Trees, Christian Death, Fields of the Nephilim, The Legendary Pink Dots, London After Midnight, Lycia, The Sisters of Mercy, and Switchblade Symphony. Most of those are Goth Rock but some are in their own seperate genres of Gothic music, mostly just London After Midnight and Christian Death though.

And for Gothic Metal... I enjoy Theatre of Tragedy, Theatres des Vampires, Type O Negative and... a little bit of Moonspell, for the most part Gothic Metal does interest me it seems to be lack luster.

The only "gothic rock" I listen to is Malice Mizer. They also happen to be the only Japanese group I listen to as well.

I love the "baroque-ness" of their music. Very heavy on the classical elements. That, and the fact that every single one of their songs is, for lack of a better word, epic.

I can't say that I've ever listened to any other gothic bands. Unless... Does AFI count?

Nah...

No AFI is not even close.

Malice Mizer is in fact really pushing it, the band is not Goth in their own right either.

I mean even F.O.Y.'s idea of Goth bands are somewhat pushing the boundaries away from Gothic Music as well. Not to say that I am an expert but I have been involved with Goth Rock for quite a long time.

Oh I guess for sake of conversation there ARE band that as well, that many people associate with the Goth Rock Scene or whichever Goth Genre, tend to be confused with what the band's actual genre is. Not to say that all of these bands are bad, I enjoy quite a few of them they are just not goth music, but here is a list.

A Perfect Circle
AFI
The Birthday Massacre
Cradle of Filth
DImmu Borgir
Evanescence
funkerVOGT
Good Charlotte
Hatebreed
HIM
Insane Clown Posse
Interpol
Jack Off Jill
KoRn
Lacuna Coil
Linkin Park
Marilyn Manson
Megadeth
Mudvayne
My Chemical Romance
Nightwish
Nine Inch Nails
Nocturne
Ramstein
Rasputina
Razed In Black
Scarling
Skinny Puppy
Slipknot
Tool
VNV Nation
:wumpscut:
Within Temptation

Edit: I seem to remember another thread like this in the not to distant past in where I constantly kept telling everyone that what their idea of Gothic Music really was not Gothic Music. >_< Hopefully this does not turn out the same way.

I've never really paid any attention to certain genres. I just listen to whatever peaks my interest.

Yet, a band that I'm growing incredibly fond of is The LoveCrave. At least, I'm quite sure they fit into the Goth genre, but it doesn't matter to me either way.

Anyway. This is an emerging band from Italy that's been doing a lot of tours with The Birthday Massacre. I believe their first album comes out in October, which I can't wait to get my hands on. I've been listening to their demos via MySpace, and I can't get enough of them.
Ahh, I love the vocals and how they tie all of their elements together. Makes me get goosebumps whenever I listen to them.

Damn, I want a The LoveCrave shirt.

Well, according to Amorphous I listen to alot of goth. I would say that bands like KoRn and Slipknot are most oriented towards punk and grunge. I understand that they did attract quite a large amount of gothy scene kids to their music which is fine by me. It's when style and music gets confused when we have problems.
The 69 Eyes are probably my favorite goth band. It seems as if they are more oriented towards the Misfits style of music and look. Bam Margera supports them in his show from time to time and on his cheapo little label.
