ChibiHorsewoman
And your mommy too just to be fair. I seem to remember a few years ago we had a thread like this and it generated some conversations which were interesting so I decided that by the insanity vested in me by the state of Confusion I'd do it again. Since we're already talking about jobs that we have or had I figure we can discuss our parent(s) jobs as well. Hey who knows, maybe someone will find what someone's parents do interesting. Well here goes nothing.... My father works for one of the largest grocery store chains in Western New York- Wegmans. He's head of receiving there. What he does is he gets the orders of stock that the store ordered and keys them in... at least that's what I think he does. I know he goes to meetings at the beginning of the month or bi monthly where they try out some new recipes for their Menu magazine as well. But I really don't know exactly what he does. On the side to make a little extra money my dad also cuts lawns for a lady who lives across from where my great-aunt's house is and my mom's cousin's daughter. My mom's job is a bit harder for me to explain. She's a computer program trainer for this company called FIT (Food Information training) she works from home and makes more than my dad. But it's not easy, she has to sometimes work over time and start earlier than she needed to. Plus there's a lot of traveling involved and sometimes the plane gets delayed or a goose flies into an engine or something. So, what about everyone else?
corpseman
my dad works for a phone company kingston plc and he maintains an automated call center machine cluster (one of those machines that picks up and plays a message saying ''press 1 if you want to do this, press 2 if you want to do this, if your about to die of a seizure mash the keypad with your face'') my mom works as a part time classroom assistant in a primary school, at the moment she is working with second grade. she helps kids with learning disabilities to well learn basically. nothing interesting there
Sangome
My father is the manager (or one of them, rather) of a Ryan's restaurant in one of the next towns over, But before that, he was a District Manager of Hardees - of which he worked for for 24 years. My mother works at a mailroom of sorts at a physicians services place thing, but unfortunately she got laid off a couple weeks ago. She works there until the 29th. Fortunately, she found a job at a local day-care, and she starts there at the start of October.
visualkei
Hm... I think my dad has a relatively rare job. He's a shrimper. He has a boat, and he goes out for 1.5-2 weeks at a time. He's home for a few months during winter-spring. During this time, he does random jobs, or works on his shrimp netting. One of the random jobs he'll take are taking the oysters out of their shell. This is a tough job, and shrimpers earn money with their sweat and blood. Most shrimpers I know are through my parents, Vietnamese immigrants who are in this dangerous business because they have few choices. My mom is a nail technician. She does nails. Before that, she worked at a crab factory where they scraped the meat out of crabs, and packaged it. I don't know why, but this job required the workers to come to work at 2 a.m.! My mom's hands hurted so much from this work. She then switched to shrimp packaging at local harbours, and this job paid well, but was extremely vigorous. She finally decided to study and go into nails, a job that wasn't so physically demanding and required ridiculous hours. I think she's happy where she is now, but I still get angry when I hear about all the horrible customers she has. Their attitudes and disrespect towards her, or when she catches something from touching their hands and feet. =*( Growing up in an immigrant family and seeing my parents working so hard to care for our family has a major affect on my perspective on life. They've worked hard and deserve everything they've earned, yet there seems to always be someone out there to hurt them or bring them down.
Ellerby
My father's official occupation is a Clergy. But really, who uses that word anymore? Mainly people just call him Pastor or Reverend. He works at a Pentecostal (Christian) Church in Ontario (which my whole family goes to) that normally has about 300+ guests Sunday Mornings. He's the Senior Pastor (there is also an Assistant Pastor and a Youth Pastor) and preaches a sermon 3/4 times a month. My mom is the Manager of a Christian Book Store near where we live (the church is about 20 minutes away). They sell more than just books, though. Stuff like CDs, Video's, Posters and Jewelry could all be found there. There you go, hehe.
musical_kitten
My daddy owns his own audiology place, and I think now he's got one in Spearfish and Custer. Yay! He has alot of patients - one lady is 104 years old!!! Its fun. And he's mad cause Walgreens wouldn't buy his place so he could get a better one. Mostly Chocolates wanted too much for their brand new building. Daddy doesn't like them very much. Nor does he like Walgreens. Fun, huh? And, just for kicks, my mother stays home. That's a blast, right? Staying in a huge house all day with my 4-year-old brother, Edzilla?
ChibiHorsewoman
And, just for kicks, my mother stays home. That's a blast, right? Staying in a huge house all day with my 4-year-old brother, Edzilla?
I have a friend who is a stay at home mom... she has three kids ages 8, nearly 4 and nearly one. No thank you I need to get out of my house for a while. Being a stay at home mom involves too much work and you don't get much recognition for it. So I give some props (tired ok) to your mom because she works just as hard as I do.
Panda
Truly, the job of stay-at-home mom is way underappreciated. I know I would totally go insane if I were to be stuck in the house all day doing chores while tending to little ones. Mega props to those moms. They rock. As for my folks. My dad has worked at Japan Airlines Flight Training Facility for the past 34 years. His job has evolved over the years and now it seems like all he does is sit at his desk in the office and read the newspaper. LOL I guess there are perks for being the senior employee. With the major changes in the airlines industry they just aren't training as many new pilots as they use to. My mom is a housewife. She is very sickly and cannot work. She keeps busy during the day with light housework and watching television. Other than that I think her "job" is bugging my hubby and I to have kids so she can be a grandma.
Ezekiel
My dad's an Instrument Engineer, and he's a contractor rather than a 'constant' employee. His previous job was working for a company called KBR, which was in Azerbaijan, and that involved designing instruments to pump oil across Turkey. Or something like that. I forget exactly. He's now working in London for Foster Wheeler, who he's worked for before when we lived in South Africa. I'm pretty sure he worked for them when we were in Thailand, too. My mum is currently 'stay at home', but she owns another house with my cousin which they're doing up together to sell. She also used to be an architect in South Africa and has worked on some really big hotel projects. She also used to be a designer in Foster Wheeler, which is where she met my dad. My dad's job has allowed us to move around a lot, which is pretty cool. I wish my mum could find something to settle into though, because she really needs something else going on in her life. ):
Guest LilyBebeboo
this is kinda a weird thread, but ok. it reminds me of that scene from Kindergarden Cop where arnold asks what everyone's dad does, and the little girls go "our mommy says our daddy is a sex machine". haha. anyway, my dad is a civil engineer. he is "retired" but still consults. he travels all over. my mom is a nurse for the post op. Sandy
Well, my daddy is technically called a "finemechanist". In practice, he fixes weapons of doom - meaning dentist's appliances. ;P He's worked his whole life for the same company, straight after he dropped out of school. But life has pulled him a long way. As for my mother, she has been unemployed for a big part of her life, and the expectations of her ever getting a proper job is honestly zero, due to her being imprisoned from manslaughter. *gasp* She's also an alcoholic of the highest degree, and has generally messed up her life pretty bad. So there, another story about Sandy's Big Happy Family. :P
Gavin
Interesting, most interesting. My dad works as a supervisor in Final Pack for Guidant, the guys who make pacemakers who were in turn recently bought out by Boston Scientific and Abbot Laboratories. His job is to basically ensure that the different lines run smoothly and do their job properly, which is to ensure that all the pacemakers are properly packaged in the correct language, have the right materials and are in full working order, if there's even a single fault with one that means hours of overtime in recall. My mother has a simpler job, she's a senior banker in the local branch of Allied Irish Banks, or AIB for short. She's not a manager or anything fancy, but could definitely do the job if called to, probably the closest description would be "senior teller" although that's barely half her job.
nezzyjean
My father is one of the unlucky pilots who works for Delta airlines. he's been with the company for 15 years and is a captain. He no longer has the penchant that he was promised from the company, and my parents have been taking money out of my college fund to pay the bills. Since he made captain, he lost the seniority he had over the other co-pilots, so his schedule sucks. He mainly flies to Germany, Hawaii, California, Ireland, and England, and is usually gone for atleast 3 weeks a month, and he won't be home for any holidays this year. Since he's gone all the time and my sister's off at college, its usually just me and my mom at the house. Its seems very empty compared to what it was last year. My mom used to work in the pentagon in the P.O.W. department, but she left that job a couple years back and now is a Media Paraprofessional ("library lady") at a highschool in my county. Its kind of weird because i know a bunch of kids who go to her school and they're always like: i saw your mom today! and then when they haven't met her yet and they do, they're like: "holy schneikes! that lady works at my school!" Its kindof weird, i suppose.

SaiyanPrincessX
My dad owns his own machine shop. Him and his friend started it about four years ago or so, but they had some disagreements and whatnot, so not he is the only one working there. My parents are devorced also, so this means he has to work even harder to pay the bills. He gets up at 5ish during the week, and gets home whenever, depending on how much work he has to do for costumers. Sometimes he'll get home around 7pm, or midnight, or 3am. Then back to work just a few hours later. I worry about him. We don't have health insurance or anything either. He will never be able to retire, and I don't know if his shop will ever speed up. My brother and I will help him out occationally, but I have work and classes, and my brother is still in high school, so we don't have time to help out too much. However, me being able to drive helps out if my brother needs to get somewhere or something, so my dad won't have to do it so much. As for my mom, who lives an hour away, she works at a rehab facility for older people you have had strokes or whatnot and need rehab; physical therapy type things. She currently works part time, because its a new job. She was laid off last October, from the same type of job. Her and I are real close.
crobo
My Daddy cleans peoples carpets. :catgirl: I think it's mad cool because nobody else has a carpet cleaning daddy! well ya know, nobody else I'm aware of... He doesn't think it's so cool. He hates it with a passion but my Daddy's in his 60s... There's not exactly an abundant amount of jobs open to him. He tried being a postman for a while but it didn't work out too well. the ickiness of the hours loike!! Anywho my super daddy shall forver be the saviour of yer filthy carpets  Oh and my Mammy well deserves a mention. She's got a harder job than my Dad, lookin after all of us little ingrates! She's a "homemaker" . I have 7 brothers and sisters I kid you not. So like she's had it slightly tough over the years. And it has taken it's toll, she's clinically depressed and has diabetes due to ill health. Amd bless her heart, she's still going. It's not easy for my family, but we survive cuz my parents are troopers and I's proud. ;) Aww cheese.
PaganAngel
Yeah, well my daddy's the Food & Beverage manager at a hotel/casino in downtown Reno, The Sands. It's great. He's always right in the middle of the action during Reno's world famous Hot August Nights and Street Vibrations. Plus, during the summer I get to hang out at his casino's pool parties every week, spending hours in the hot tub sipping endless virgin pina colada blends. It almost makes me feel rich. Almost. celestialcharm
To tell you the truth, my dad's a stay-at-home-dad and my mom's on sick leave. My dad used to work as a truck painter, but then he got carpel tunnel. He had to have surgery on his hand to take out a lump that was in his wrist. Then, he hurt his back. But, he is officially a mechanic, and fixes our family cars, and makes cool objects such as sheds and closets for our house. But, he also cooks dinner because my mom has been on a not-making-your-dinner strike from since about '98. My dad is also the family chauffeur. He drives around my mom's aunts to wherever they need to go. It's kinda cool because both sides of my family can rely on him. My mom doesn't even appreciate him! I think he might become a truck driver, or a public transit driver. I saw him studying for the license test. Anyways, my mom was a nurse. She used to work at a long term care centre for the Jewish elderly. She worked there for I think 20+ years. She even tells me how I should be eating kosher. She used to bring my siblings and I grape matzah. That was some good stuff. But, she's going through a nurse burnout, and hurt her shoulder. Now, she's not any fun to be around. She's kind of emo. Guest Heero yuy
My father is a Sargent in the beloved U.S. Marine Corp. He specilizes in logistics and supply for the one zero eight Marine tank unit stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky. It's awesome going to work with him, I get to ride around in Abram tanks and watch them fire off saboe rounds. I also get to learn about weoponary, they let me take apart a M16 A4. My mother works as a banker for Fifth/third bank. A east coast based bank in the region of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
Shane12_01
Well my Mom did alot of jobs from cooking at Cafe's to cleaning campgrounds, untill she got sick and past on. My dad is currently retired, but he used to work for Southern California Edison, idk what the title is or was, but he was a supervisor and he was in charge of about half of southern Californias electricity. Pretty cool I think.
