So I'm looking through the news on Googles website and i come acoss a link to an article on Ugly Betty, that new show that recently premiered.

The article is flanked by a photograph of a nude Salma Hayek.

I understand she produced the show and all...but why do i have to see her nude?

I'm pretty sure i can't link the article or anything but just go to Google.com>news,type in Ugly Betty and you will see what i mean.

This isnt the first time i have seen a pointless use of nudity; so have you ever encountered the same thing?

Be it in magazines, games or movies?

Interesting, most interesting.

Well as the phrase was coined, "sex sells" and Ms Salma Hayek is definitely a very attractive woman. However like so many things in the media, when something become gratuitous it loses it's affect, for instance how many of us don't even blink when someone is shot on TV any more ?

As for my own experiences with "pointless nudity" well any time Dunnes Stores, who are one of Ireland's biggest supermarket and department store chains launch any new form of women's lingerie, they seem to delight in showing as little of their product as possible and instead focus on the models. Obviously of course this is to make people believe that by wearing Dunnes stuff, you'll look fabulous, regardless of how you look in your undergarments.

I dunno, it depends on how graphic the violence is. But I think sex appeal still sells, no matter how much of it we are bombarded with. Just because all companies advertise with attractive models doesn't mean that the public eventually becomes desensitized to that sex appeal. People still buy products promoted by young and beautiful models, not "average" people.

We were all born nude. Fifty percent of the population has breasts, the other fifty have seen them at some point in thier life. I don't get why everyone cares.

If people wouldn't pay attention to it, the problem wouldn't exist. But you see, the majority of people do pay attention to it. Sex wouldn't sell if it wasn't what people were interested in.

But people are interested. So sex sells. That's just how it is.

And here I await the day when an uber-nerd can advertise Victoria's Secret.

Sadly, if people didn't pay attention to it, we wouldn't be here today.

Anyhow, I see the flagging of that image as false advertising, and I want my time back.

However, on a side note, it is sad that as far as we have advanced throughout time, we still prefer to buy the product advertised with Ms. Juggs rather than the one that actually works. Can humankind not rise from indulgence in primal instinct?

My only advice is that you should never visit a museum, vegeta rocker.

Nudity has been a key part of art and entertainment forever now. The Greeks celebrated the beauty of the human figure and it was prominent in Renaissance art. Nudity is very rarely pointless; if you look at magazine ads you can often see similarities and connections between ads featuring "nudity" and artistic archetypes, such as Eve and the Madonna.

Don't be so prudish. If anything, you should take offense to military propaganda--which is a lot more harmful, I think.

im not saying im a prude, i have no problem with nudity. I have been to the museum plenty of times and have painted nude models.

I just didnt see the purpose for that particular article, thats what i meant by pointless.

If it is creatively done for art then that is something completely diffrent; the purpose is expression.

I just didnt understand how a show about a comical and ugly woman has an article flanked by a nude photograph of the actress looking beautiful. i just felt it undermined the point it the show making it pointless.

I probably shouldn't have called you prudish; I already know from your posts that you're not.

I think you pretty much answered your own question here though. How many people in the *general public* are going to be interested in a show about an ugly woman, regardless of how well it is written or how funny it is? A nude photograph of an attractive, *recognizable* pop culture icon will automatically gain their attention at the very least and garner interest. Even if the photograph causes them to just look further into the show then it has succeeded. So, you have to ask yourself: is it really pointless? Ironic, maybe. Shameless? Perhaps. Pointless? Not so much.

well it seems thread was over by the last two post.. but still theres lots of other times when senseless nudity is. what i think is worse is pointless sex scenes in movies and tv shows. for example in underworld 2 had a sex scene in it that i thought was just stupid. whats her face had just escape and are hiding out then they start having sex.. imight have missed something but im pretty sure thats just how it went.

If I could, I'd be naked all the time. Sure, it would get cold, so I'd put some clothes on to go out into the Michigan winter. I'd also be nice and put a towel down so my *** sweat doesn't get all over the stuff I sit on.

You might think that in this sense, I'm a nudist, but I'm really not. I'm the only one who gets to be naked. There are some people I really don't want to see naked, and there are some people I don't want other people to see naked, either. I can't change those needs about myself, but my being allowed to be naked doesn't compromise those needs, and lets me be as comfortable as I want to be, wherever I am.

As usual, wishes and wants are worth about as much as a pile of dog doo-doo, so I have to have a plan to bring my desire into fruition. I'm going to create something that will become absolutely essential to everyone, and I will monopolize and withhold it unless my demands are met. Among them will be my right to be naked all the time.

You can piss and moan about how it's not fair if you want, but I don't see you creating something wonderful to get the same privelege!

Don't worry, you'll get used to it, and after a while seeing Erik naked will be about as offensive as seeing a baby naked.
