Guest LilyBebeboo
well, i have never seen one or heard of one, but id be interested. i mean, they make movies based around a central idea of a team, why not do the same with anime. of course there'd have to be enough drama off the field to keep viewers interested. maybe you should make one! haha. Tallgeese-
A long time ago when I was younger I used to wach 2 anime shows based on sports, one was a volleyball one and I know it was for girls but when you are little you don't care and a soccer one they were both very good but I have no idea what either of their names were. Panda
My sports anime viewing only consists of Prince of Tennis and Eyeshield 21. (Unless you count Baki the Grappler but I'd rather not put the "Fight Club" in as a sport. :P ) Currently Eyeshield is the one that I am watching because, well, it's Football season! My favorite character is Ryokan Kurita. I just want to go glomp him! Not that I could, he's a flippin' wall! I love that it's an underdog story. Kinda reminds me of that Keanu Reeve's movie 'The Replacements". Go Deimon Devil Bats!! Prince of Tennis I know has a huge fan base and following. It really didn't hook me. I like the series but I am not a rabid fan girl over the guys. I think this is because when it comes to sports I love the underdogs. These guys are super talented, cute and have a team that is a well tuned machine. Compare this to the Deimon Devil Bats in Eyeshield it's night and day! I guess in the end when it comes to sports anime series I prefer a good underdog story than one of the "perfect players".
only1specialed
well so far i've only seen the fighting spirit. thats one of those underdog stories. main character get bullied all of his life and he gets saved by a boxer and you know get involved into boxing. the story is great and the matches are actually edge of the seat thrillers most of em anyway. like i said earlier i havent seen other types of sport related anime. i guess most people might not be into these types cause there not into sports themselve...ill admit im not a big sports fan and i now nothing at all when it come to foosball and anyother sport. but i alway like to watch a good game no matter whos playing. i guess most people wont wanna watch a sport related anime cause if you think about it most people watch it for the fantasy and great stories and battles that happen on alternate universe and stuff. so they probably figure why watch something they know nothing about and probably never tried in real life (not really trying to say anything bad here so no better get offended) i would like to see more anime based on sports but only if they can pull it off like they did in the fighting spirit. black rurouni
I think that sport anime is one of the lowest forms of anime in the world because the anime has no story line to it but just that main person just playing the sport :D

Some one who is pick on through out his life and is actually a good fighter, but thats not the only good thing about it. ive seen plenty of anime in my life some good some bad. i reallly havent seen an anime that puts a lot of attention to detail on the impacts for these fights. sometimes im actually sitting on the edge of my seat hoping that Ippo (main character) wins the fight. they dont just show the main fights. they also show him training hes even got a little bit a of a love going on. i really recomend you watch this anime (and there are very few animes i ever recomend to anyone) before really judging sport anime. that goes for everyone else too. before you come and talk down about sport anime you have to at least seen a couple (not just one or two) episodes. cause sometimes you just gotta give these things a chance. Magus
I say I don't like sports type animes, but truth be told, I've never seen one. Mainly because I've always been into action, and when I read a little synopsis about one of the sports animes, (mainly Prince of Tennis) I just brush it off to the side because it doesn't interest me. And with that in mind, I normally label (I don't tell people because other people like the genre) other sports anime as boring or just have nothing that interests me. Would I ever give sports anime a chance in the future, I don't know. Probably not unless convinced, but at the moment no. (narrow / closed minded.. yeah I know, I need to work on it too.)
only1specialed
well im pretty sure im gonna be the only defending sports anime... and this thread is gonna die soon. but the thing i really ask for is that you give sports anime a chance. now the real question is will any of you really give it a chance? well venom pretty much answered the question for everyone else. im pretty sure the only reason no one is checkingout sports anime is cause there arent many people promoting it. now when it comes to bleach, naruto, or dragonball. so many people have seen it and since there so many people watching it. people will go with those instead of the lesser known anime. im pretty sure this is the last post im probably gonna get for this so i say this. if you really wanna give this genre a chance go out and check out "THE FIGHTING SPIRIT"
only1specialed, you have already been warned several times to improve your post quality. Kamui
I have watch a sports anime called Hikaru no Go. At first I was so excited to watch Hikaru no Go and play actual game Go. :catgirl: After the 40th episode it started to be predictable on what going to happen. The main character will always win against the Go challengers and will struggle to win the game. All the main character does is play Go throughtout the series either in school or home. All the characters in the series play go all day long, but it is more fouces on the main character. You never see them in class learning, doing classwork and it seem they have no homework to do.They spend there free time to play Go. Go seem to be the main sorce of their lives. :animesmil
r2vq
I have watch a sports anime called Hikaru no Go.
I was waiting for someone to mention this series. Although Go is as much a sport as Chess is, the portrayal of the game within the series is very similar to the way sports are displayed in sports-themed Anime. The intensity of a match, the difficulty of training, the challenge of rivals, the agony of defeat, and even the emotions of the onlooking crowd are all in this series. The way the movements of the characters are stylized to have dramatic poses in a similar way Anime-ted athletes are. This is definately a sports Anime if I've seen one.
The main character will always win against the Go challengers and will struggle to win the game. //snip// You never see them in class learning, doing classwork and it seem they have no homework to do.They spend there free time to play Go. Go seem to be the main sorce of their lives. :animesmil
I'm not sure of the Anime, but I know in the Manga (which I hear is very, very close story wise to the Anime) the main character regularly loses, especially against more experienced competitors. The series is about becoming stronger and to portray this the writer had to have the characters lose every so often, even if he won most of the time. About the life (or lack thereof) thing, they did spend all their free time playing Go, but they're saying that's how dedicated you have to be if you want to be the best. 8) And the lack of homework was explained in the series. Professional Go players that are still in High School are forgiven for missing assignments or classes when their professional schedule creates a conflict. As for other sports related Anime, I've never really been interested. I have a lot of friends who love the Captain Tsubasa Manga, Prince of Tennis is of course popular, and Ashita no Joe is a classic, but I've never been interested enough to watch/read any of these for very long. I find the plot points similar, if not the same. A weak, underdog-ish character works his hardest to become the best in the his respective sport. He makes friends, and rivals along the way. I can only watch one of a repetative genre without feeling deja vu, and for the sports genre it was Hikaru no Go. The worst/least intersting sports-related Anime I've ever seen was Monkey Turn. Dear god I thought that script was bad. -r2
only1specialed
Man i was waiting for someone to reply. Well i can't say that i've seen that show but i have heard of it. Only through an AMV though. i thought it was funny......... how do you make a game like go action packed? A friend of mine read the manga for the fighting spirit. He said it was more deeper than the anime but in the end thats always how it is. i haven't read that manga yet but im planning on it as soon as i can find it. the fighting spirit also pretty much works the same way as GO. you mainly see the main character train and hang out with his training buddies (which is always funny). but something cool about it is that later in the series the focus goes from Ippo to his rival. It even switches over to a new comer to the gym. So the story doesn't always revolve around the main character. ive been interested in learning more about this football related anime or is it still manga?
