visualkei
Alright, so who's going to Oni-Con 2006? This year will be my first year going to an anime convention, and I'm in my early twenties. Kind of feel too old and ashamed and dress up and all that, but I am VERY content not going with a costume. =D I'm unsure of what to expect at anime conventions. I heard the previous Oni-Cons were relatively small, and last year, there were a lot of issues involving the management of the hotel. This year the event will be at the George R. Brown Convention center, which is a HUGE place in the middle of downtown Houston. My expectations is that it will be a giant event. Anime has grown in popularity, people are becoming more informed of these events, a lot of people who went to the convention last year will come again, and it's Houston, so I'm expecting a large crowd. If you've been to one of these cons, can you give me a brief of what to expect? I'm aware of the art gallery, a J-Rock concert, anime to buy, music video/cosplay contests, anything else? I'm also bringing my 12 yr old sister, and 10 yr old boy cousin, so I hope they'll have the freedom to wonder around without me having to look after them too much. What's there for children to see? Whiteblaze
This would be my first con also. Hey visualkei, I don't think early twenties is too old to cosplay at all. I mean, there are people in their 30's and 40's who do so. Look at it this way, it's like dressing up for a Halloween party. I was going to go with a group of friends, but they can't so looks like I'll be going with my younger brother which will be just fine. Yeah, I think that it being held at the George R. Brown will help to make it bigger than in the past. I wonder why they didn't try it before?
visualkei
Oh, I didn't know that someone actually replied to this thread! I brought my little sister and cousin, and they had fun. We were only there on Saturday 5-1, though. Best part I thought was the concert. 12012 really rocked, I was very impressed by them! They put up a good show, and were very engrossing to watch. I don't usually listen to that genre much, but it was hard for me to leave the concert early b/c I had to head home, but they were really entertaining. The dealer's room basically closed before I got to really look around. I heard that every stand had the same stuff, though. I had a lot of fun, even though all I did was walk around gawking at cosplayers most of the time. =D
Darktigerpack17
Hey I went to Oni-Con 2006 this year too. It was prett kool, but my only complaint is that the George R. Brown Convention Center was wayyyy too big. It literally took me 30 minutes to get from my hotel room to the artist alley. Way too much walking. But the concert was awsome and they didnt have to limit people who could get in because it room was huge. 12012 was a bad ***** j-rock band. Hope to see them again at Ikki-con. And the dealers were actually letting people work for anime. Oh and tha LARP room was way too small as well. All in all, it was an awesome con. D Did anyone see those guys going around cosplaying as terrorists? That was kool too.
visualkei
It actually took you that long? Hm. Well it usually took me about 10 minutes to walk from my cousin's hotel room to the convention center and I walked back and forth at least 10 times for the one day I was there. I didn't get to check out any of the art for sale, basically I came too late. I might submit some art next year, and wanted to see the kind of stuff people submit (basically if mine is good enough, hehe). Also, yes 12012 was so good, I can't stop saying that! Too bad I didn't get to see them outside of the concert, but I heard that they were very curtious and down to earth to the fans that ran into them. No, I didn't noticed the terrorist cosplayers... :animestun Next year, I have got to stay for at least 2 days.
Demoness Satoe
-sigh- Well, probably not me. At least this year anyway. Traveling from NY to Houston is alot. And there is no way my dad would even consider taking me down there, besides the fact I'm only 14. Maybe next year...
