Nsbm: Wtf?

Why oh why must Vikings and Norse imagery be dragged into Nazi and Aryan supremist propaganda?

Okay, I know their reasons why, but the reasons are poorly develped and not very well informed. Argh. It just makes me angry. It's truly sad that every time I discover a new band that uses runes and mjolnirs in their imagery, I find myself looking deeply into their history and philosophy because there is a good chance they are a bunch of bigoted pigs. Bands like Graveland and Burzum are especially frustrating becasue they make some excellent music, but I refuse to support any NS groups.

I'm just frustrated, so I thought I'd vent here.

Yes quite seriously he is talking about Norse Nazis. But I agree with DeadSeraphim about getting a blog and I have no problem with NSBM bands, as supporting them wont lead to anything anyways. Plus I download their music so I only support them in listening to their music I suppose, but I do not care for the lyrics. I mean Kroda is amazing as far as musical talent goes, so is Graveland and Burzum, their beliefs do not stop me from listening to the music they create.

But you will find many, many bands like that Jake so do not be surprised.

Oh yes, I am quite aware of this. That's exactly why I'm frustrated. I have crazy Nazis talking to me on MySpace all the time, and some guy sent me a message telling me I was an anti-semetic bigot simply because I wear a Mjolnir necklace. It's rediculous.

And what's this business about me getting a blog? Why should I do that?

But I am mixed as far as races, and norse mythology is my favorite kind of myths. Anyways back on topic, thats just what people do though, they find symbols of power and the use them for their own purpose or meaning. The swastika itself is a perfect example of this, it's just sad that people never know the true meaning of the symbols they associate with negativity. I wouldn't be surprised if I got some weird looks because about some Norse symbols I'm getting as tattoo's, one being Odin's ravens Munin and Hugin, the other a symbol called Odin's horn.

^^^Excellent! I'm getting a Triple-Horn tattoo as well, on my right bicep.

Anyway, it is quite unfortunate that Norse lore had to be dragged in to all of this. Hitler's abuse of the Swastika, Suncross, Elhaz rune, and Sowilo rune didn't help any, and the small percentage of the idiot Neo-Nazis have really latched onto the whole Viking thing. It's rediculous.

I've pretty well learned to avoid band's ideologies. However, being that you are so into the Norse-themed metal in particular, and being that you're often mistaken for a Nazi, I can more than understand your frustration.

What more can you do than defend yourself honestly, letting ignorant people remain so, should they so choose?

^^^Not much more than that, indeed. However, I do try to put forth an effort to educate when I can. And I've made it really clear all over my MySpace page that I'm against "Hateful Heathens" (www.myspace.com/jakehammaren). Hopefully the whole Nordic Nazi thing is just a passing fad...

Speaking of ignorant people, my band just played the second round of a competition here in Columbus and one of the judges said:

Overall: 2 of 5
"Slayer is not appropriate."
"Horns at the Core? How about God?"
Originality: 2 of 5
"It wasn't like anything I've ever heard, so I guess it was pretty original."
Performance: 3 of 5
"Works the crowd well."

Now, allow me to explain: We played the first few riffs of 'Raining Blood' at this venue called the Core, which is run by a church. I doubt very seriously this judge would've even known it was Slayer had I not made a promise to the crowd that if we made through this round we would have 'Raining Blood' covered for them by next round.

And by 'horns' yes...he is talking about the metal horns. Evidently, you can't like metal and Jesus at the same time. I won't even go into the rest of the stuff.

Oh, the ignorance. I guess next time we'll just get together and write some crazy indie stuff where two of our guitarists play the same weird harmony over and over again for about five minutes while the other plays his like a violin, our drummer does jazz beats, the bass player does bass lines that don't fit the guitars, and I get all emotional and let out a long, slow whine for an hour.

Then, after when win the competition, we'll go record metal.

^^^You'll general find that religious groups are the most ignorant and intolerant of all.

"Horns to the Core? How about God?"

Its so rediculous that you lost because of that mindset! I can't believe it! Chances are you guys were the best band there, but NOOOOOO.

Ugh. Sickening. Disgusting.

This is exactly why I stopped calling myself a Christian.

Jake Hammer, you're spelling ridiculous wrong.

I feel that ideas need to be expressed in a constructive, hate-free way. Nazism in metal just proves how unfortunate it is when one group decides to superimpose their political agenda on a group of people. It causes pain and anguish to many, and I do not appreciate being stereotyped against.

I have said my piece.
