Have you every eoncountered some random quirk or product that you thought had absolutely no purpose at all?

I have one that has been bugging me lately; it has to do with Mozilla.

If you browse their store you can buy a two disc set of Firefox coupled with ThunderBird.

Why?

Its a free download so you don't need licenseing for multiple computers either. if you need a browser to start off with Windows comes with IE embedded so you can use that until you can donwload somthing better.

I'm not sure about Linux, but i would also assume it comes with a default browser.

So whats the reason?

You can save the firefox install file that is a whopping 6mb onto a pen drive! Why buy a set for six dollars?

It's more of a collectible than anything else. Linux's default browser is Firefox.

Myspace Instant Messenger

I haven't encountered a soul that uses this, and why don't people just email or use AIM? The client is bad. The service is shoddy. NO ONE KNOWS IT EXISTS. No point whatsoever.

Well, the only thing I can come up with for a reason for the $6 disks would be for someone who maybe only has slower than slow dial up and didn't want to wait hours for it to download. Otherwise...*shrugs*...maybe it's for people who feel guilty using stuff for free? Who knows.

I always thought it was weird to charge people for catalogs. So, in order for me to shop with you I have to pay you to look at the stuff you are selling...okay. :animeangr I know it's to cover the cost of printing/shipping the catalog but still. I just feel that catalogs should fall under the "advertising" umbrella and retailer should see them the same as tv or radio ads and just give them to people.

Of course with the popularity of the internet now I wonder how many retailers are still making those big holiday catalogs? I guess you can say that those catalogs really don't have a place in our modern world anymore...especially if they are charging for them!

Fashion Magazines.

I wouldn't ever pay money to buy a fat magazine filled with 95% pictures of people wearing "fashionable" expensive clothing. I mean nobody normal really looks in those mags and want to go to Neiman Marcus to buy that outfit.

Then the articles in those magazines which take up the other 5% are so boring and shallow.

I don't keep up with these trends. I can just watch tv for it. Just my view.

Interesting, most interesting.

T-shirts that have slogans like "If you can read this, you're too close" are things I personally consider pointless, but such is only an opinion, other more concrete pointless things would probably be older mobile phone download services which used to charge a fortune for ringtones which you would then send to all your friends for nothing, this is before everyone had different phones from different manufacturers and you could diddle these companies without feeling bad.

Mother of all pointless things related to the latter would be the Crazy Frog merchandise from that awful tone, how anyone decided that the most annoying sound in the world could be marketed is beyond me.

When I saw this title, I thought it would be akin to the boy in Boogiepop Phantom who wants to get rid of all the useless things in the world. I sometimes yearn for that power.

Anyway, there are plenty of useless things. Things which distract us from our dreams. And yet such dreams could never be formulated without their foundations in said pointless things. These things then become the opposite of pointless, and in a sense, nothing is truly pointless.

I digress.

As for pointless things... Scroll Lock. I'm not even entirely sure what it does, I never press it really and I can't figure out the difference in having it on or off.

Seriously, that's probably one of the most pointless thing's i've probably ever seen. I mean, everything about the messenger is ****** up. I hate it, someone should destroy that vile thing. Because, seriously, NO ONE use's it. Go Myspace.

The reason? They say it's quicker to have a disk on hand especially when they are fixing someone's computer and part of the problem is that the customer can't get online. One guy has a whole portable cd case full of disks of this nature that he uses for work.

I'm assuming that if their wasn't some form of demand, they wouldn't bother to make the disks right?

As for pointless stuff. I saw a title on the M & M's bags the other day that said tear and share size. It just made me laugh since it was the same size as a king sized bag, so it seemed pointless for two bags of the same size to have different names.

Government standards for schools are pretty pointless. Soon they'll be starting a required government test(you know, the bubble forms) for PE classes in the districts around here. We even need PE portfolios right now. Aside from boring the students and teachers, I don't see what those could possibly accomplish. It's just so troublesome and takes up space afterward.
