silpheedpilot
Well, I'm not quite sure if this should go in Play It or here but since it's more or less talking about music...of games I figured I'd put it here and then if it needed to be moved someone could go ahead and do that. Anyway. Favorite video-game OST. Final Fantasy VII? Rhapsody? Halo? Whatever the case may be, everyone at least likes some tunes on some of the games they play, even me who normally does the custom tracks option if he can, because lets face it; Listening to Prodigy while killing Nazis on Call Of Duty 2 is a whole lot better that way. However, there is a soundtrack that just stuck out when I played the game it went to and that game is none other than the very metal Painkiller. With songs like sWitch, X E Qt R, and Painkiller the game reeks of metal and for good measure, considering you're one man blowing holes in Hell's forces much like the Doomguy did back in the day. The tunes themselves are very metal with lots of heavy guitar licks, hammer-ons and general electric guitar chords. As a whole the soundtrack itself varies with heavy hitters like the aformentioned X E Qt R, to the mild Power It Up, with some techno-industrial tunes in there for good measure like the song Bear Me The Light. The soundtrack is all very good, even if you're not into game soundtracks it's at least worth the 45 or so minutes it runs.
TheResplendent
This answer will probably be repeated quite a lot in this thread, but it just seems like a sin to me to leave it out. Pretty much any of the Final Fantasy OSTs are gold, the same can be said for any of Uematsu's work really. Specifically however, i am a big fan of the FFVII and FFVIII OSTs. The boss musics got me pumped when they were supposed too and set the mood almost perfectly, especially One Winged Angel and JENOVA for their respective battles, and as for VIII the gems were Maybe I'm A Lion and The Legendary Beast. Aside from battle and boss themes though, both really knew how to set other kinds of mood...especially sad ones. Like in FFVII, It's hard to not cry (or admit that you did if you're more the macho type) after hearing Aerith's Theme not only during the scene of
her death
but during the following fight with JENOVA as well, as the consistency of the music serves as a constant reminder that you have to put more emotion into beating that boss's *** because of what you were just forced to witness. In FFVIII, Fisherman's Horizon soothes you and lets you know that this is a secluded place to relax and plan that next step, play some triple triad, or just lounge around and enjoy the beauty of being miles away from land and civilization and listen as the music heals your mind. I could honestly go on for a quite a while about the FF Soundtracks but tha would take up quite a lot of room. I believe it is safe to say that the good majority of them are true masterpieces worthy of mention and appreciation beyond the norm. Aside from the Final Fantasy series, I am a big fan of Yasunori Mitsuda's work. They can be found in such games such as Xenogears and the Chrono games (Trigger/Cross/Radical Dreamers). Personally i think Awakening is one of the best final boss battle themes ever in an RPG. When i think of classical and orchestrated soundtracks fitting for their respective RPGs, Uematsu and Mitsuda are at the top of the list. Aside from the more mainstream stuff though, an exceptional and easily overlooked soundtrack is that of Atlus's Shin Megami Tensei series, whose chief composer is Shoji Meguro. It's difficult to explain why the music in the SMT games go so well, but playing them and hearing it for yourself, it will instantly make sense. My favorite (taking into consideration I have not played Devil Summoner yet) at the moment is probably Nocturne soundtrack, where the music stays constant in it's dark and quaint fashions, but seems to flow well with every situation it's played for regardless of it's ambiance. The boss battle themes are particularly excellent. Now aside from full game soundtracks themselves, I'd like to give a mention to probably my favorite opening theme in any game i've played and possibly the best opening sequence mixed with song...Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. In classic James Bond form yes, but with a style all it's own simultaneously. It really makes me beg for a movie everytime i watch it. HGW is extremely talented all around as well, a lot of the MGS themes and whatnot flow very well with the game (especially 2 and 3). Semjaza
Most of my favorite music is from old Nintendo games. There were a lot of memorable themes then that have since been updated wonderfully. Obviously this doesn't involve a single composer, thanks to that... but between Metroid, Super Mario, Zelda and Kid Icarus I am quite happy. Generally, I do say my favorite composer is Koichi Sugiyama, however. He's largely known for doing all of the music in the Dragon Quest games. I wish he'd come up with more new songs for each game, but what's there is damn good.

TURN THE CAPS LOCK OFF! ALSO YOUR POST IS TOO CONCISE WITHOUT ANY REAL INSIGHT. PLZ FIX THAT. THNX! Yeah, anyway, I love the original Lumines soundtrack. The developers did a wonderful job of integrating the soundtrack into the actual gameplay, which obviously made it a significant component of the game. The music wasn't just there; the soundtrack was not just something pleasant to listen to--the rhythm was incorporated into the visuals and the gameplay perfectly. I also loved how the blocks made various sounds that fit in with each level's music. And man, I still love "Shinin'." I was disappointed when I heard that the US version of Lumines 2 would feature songs like "Holla Back Girl" and **** like that, but the inclusion of songs like "Heavenly Star" somewhat makes up for that travesty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL2od1AF_Cs

Its in japanese though so i have no idea what they are saying. :animeswea besides that i i would listen to any music game theme soundtrack. from dance dance revolution to Beatmania even Guitarro man.

Everyone's gungho about listening to every OST ever, then they hear "Have You Ever Seen Me?" and BAM - they go catatonic in fear and pain. I was always partial to some of the extended version of OoT's Ocarina tunes, and enjoyed Aeris' Theme from FFVII a whole lot. There was also some song from FFIX I used to identify a lot with, but it kind of got ruined for me with a messy breakup. Otherwise, nada. Give me real music anyday.
Shinmaru
Give me real music anyday.[/color']
:stupid: My favorite video game OST flips around a lot. Right now I'm really enjoying the Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross OSTs... moreso Chrono Cross. I love the flavor of Chrono Cross' music and how different it is compared to what you normally get from Final Fantasy and whatnot. It makes every song so much fun for me to listen to: I'm embarassingly addicted to "Time's Scar" at the moment, for example. Chrono Trigger just has a lot of songs that I enjoy listening to that also do a nice job of setting the mood for wherever you're at. Super Metroid's OST is also a perennial favorite of mine. Every song on there is just perfect for that game lol. I'd say it's still one of the strongest examples of how great music can better immerse people into a game's environment. Some of it is slow and progressive, and others are straight up and consist of fast tempos. A good example of this is the OST to Kraid's lair; it's just so powerful the way it kicks in during that first visit, where you've just left the elevator that leads down to it. All in all though, I like Metroid's OST in general. The themes of the soundtracks completely fit in with the mood of the games and, as you said Shinmaru, help the gamer to really experience the atmospheres produced within. I think my favourite Metroid score would have to be the one that plays during the title screen for Metroid Prime. Man, that's so cool. Honorable mentions would include FFX's Zanarkand Ruins and various ocarina tunes from LoZ: OoT.
Sho Ayori
I suppose my favourite OSTs are most of the Final fantasy arrangements, plus the remixes done by the Black Mages, but there are quite a lot of other games on various consoles that I love the music too. I've found that the 'Tales Of' series has some pretty decent scores, as is with Kingdom Hearts/2. It's just hard to decide which ones I favour most. In my opinion, Final Fantasy 7-10 had some kick-*** music on it, some of them I enjoyed but some I didn't, so it's pretty evenly matched.
Boo
The Doom series have the best soundtracks ever. I can't say for sure if the N64 edition has the same soundtrack as the PC edition. Though I must say the Chrono Trigger soundtrack was pretty neat too, not a single game soundtrack surpasses Doom.
2010DigitalBoy
Well, see, I mostly RPGs. And don't get me wrong, RPGs do have some pretty darn good music sometimes. There are even those that I thought about buying the OSTs for. But I almost never listen to my video game music when I'm playing them. I get really bored by BGMs, and even without sound effects, they grate on my nerves. Instead, I listen to the many CDs on my computer. As far as favorite game STs... Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is a good choice as it has some really fun, cheesy rock songs, namely those provided by Crush 40. Shadow Hearts Covenant has some pretty great songs, especially the battle music on both disks. They are probably my 2 picks for best game songs. The combat music from Halo is simply MAGICAL. But the ALLTIME best ST of course goes to The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time which blows me away continually. All of the ocarina songs are classic and great, and I can't count the number of times Zelda's Lullaby has been stuck in my head. Honorable Mentions: Otherworld, the theme, and the hymn from FF10, Tales of Symphonia, and anything I forgot XD
Humaru
Music is always great while you're killing something on a large scale. My favorite game to play with music is Dynasty Warriors. The music on this game is so awesome that I will just go to the options menu and play the music and jam on my guitar to it. My and friend have actually memorized some the songs on there. "Lu Bu's Rage" and "Onslaught on He Fei" are the best songs on the game. When the music starts I'm a whole new person as I'm destroying Cao Cao's army with the "Sword of Justice" Ma Chao "The Splendid". If you got the game try it out for yourself.
