Ideas for 'The Square'

Lately, i've been looking at Adventure Square and noticed that a lot of RP posts were getting locked because of [fill in blank] that the moderators didn't approve of; and I also see great RP's die just because the story couldn't hold the [accepted] members attention and curiosity - OB Survivor being one of many exceptions. I also have been trying to make a RP for the future but seem to have come up with a 'RP Beginner's Block'.

So, anywho, I was wondering if we could get some collective input from people in OB concerning what people want in a [great] RP. I believe this would not only help me but everyone as a whole when it comes to posting in the Square.

Some questions to answer:

1. What do you [as a member] want to see most in a RP?

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?

3. Does humorous fun outweigh killing and gore or vice-versa? [Come on... be honest]

4. Do you post mainly for RP's whenever you enter the Boards?

Hopefully, these questions [along with other statements, if any] will help.

1) I, as a member, prefer to see strong original storylines as oppossed to spin-offs of popular series. I find that a spin off signifies a shortage of creativity and even a mildly interesting rp is more likely to grab my attention than others.

There are some exceptions to this, if the storyline is set in the same universe and properly utilises similar themes than there is nothing wrong with it.

2) I usually play in an M rated RP as it allows more flexibility to an post than what other ratings do.

3) I find that too much killing and gore are not very good for a lot of rpgs; A lot of PG rated ones try and use as much as possible. Light hearted fun eases the mood a bit and lets an RPer try and expand themselves a bit.

4) Not nessecarily, I try to be respected on a community board before I create RPs or post. There are also time issues with RPs for me as I can only really work on them on the weekends and holidays.

Great idea for a thread man. Before i continue I would also like to state that eventhough it was before my time, thanks to my dear OB history teacher (Sakura) I had the pleasure of reading through the past OB Survivor threads and enjoyed just reading it. Since then I have been hoping that Sandy had plans for another one, despite two of the best topics for a RP of that nature to be based on already being done (FF and VG in general).

But anyway, on to da stuff:

1. What do you [as a member] want to see most in a RP?
-Something original and innovative is great, but in no way is something that sets out to revolutionize a genre to overshadow a great portrayal of an already existing story. It is completely dependent on the presentation more so then the idea. But both are very important. The story must be explained either throughly or cryptic enough to draw in interest but not reveal too much if the point of the story is to unravel mostly through the telling of the story itself.

Also something with an ample area for character creation, nothing so wide that it comes off more as work then fun for everyone, but something that breeds individuality for each character.

Lastly but not least, a RP that promotes interactivity. Whether it be based on factions, rivalries, or friendships. Forming bonds of all types is part of the fun of RPs i believe, or even elaborating on one that has been pre-decided.

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?
-M preferably, because there are less boundries and dosen't neccesarily mean we have to fit a certain criteria, merely that we have the ability to do so should the situation call for it.

3. Does humorous fun outweigh killing and gore or vice-versa? [Come on... be honest]
-Elements of both are important to a potentially succesful RP i believe, along with others that weren't mentioned (action/romance etc). An un-balance may work as well pending on how the story is meant to unravel.

4. Do you post mainly for RP's whenever you enter the Boards?
-I always check the Square/Underground first If i am involved or looking to get involved in a RP. When it comes to posting though, i will save RP posts for last since they usually take longer then posts in other categories.

1. What do you [as a member] want to see most in a RP?
Organization, and the stubbornness to keep it going, even if it means getting my screenname(s) and pestering the everliving daylights out of me. Plotline wise, originality. While I know nihil nova sub solis, old, well used and familiar things can be set in a new, exciting style.

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?
E, PG and M all have their own appeal, if an RP is good I'll join regardless of rating. Unless it's marked, like, "EXTREME S!" or something.

3. Does humorous fun outweigh killing and gore or vice-versa?
Both have their places. Humor can be found in the strangest places in real life, and it helps to contrast the dark stuff going on in the RP. I am a fan of well written violence, not so much of gore. It all depends on what mood I'm in...so...to condense: neither is better.

4. Do you post mainly for RP's whenever you enter the Boards?
Pretty much, although I'm trying (read: trying) to branch out.

1. What do you [as a member] want to see most in a RP?

- What I would most like to see in a RP is a very action-packed one. Yes, I believe that any RP - or story, depending on how you look at it - must have a background, an opening, a story, a climax [above all others] and a sweet conclusion as well; but action - from what i've seen in OB - keeps member's entertained and posting more frequently whereas a RP with just story will begin to decline gradually.

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?

- I love to play in any RP rating but I don't like to curse and / or be around sexual natures. I'm not saying i'm a stranger to it but there's something about someone 'posting' multiple swear words and / or [blatent] sexual natures that just makes me feel... well... wrong.

3. Does humorous fun outweigh killing and gore or vice-versa? [Come on... be honest]

I think that humorous fun, to an extent, does outweigh gore and violence because you can post with more creativity when you're trying to have fun. I believe it's easy to kill someone; though some hardcore M Rated members might disagree with me.

4. Do you post mainly for RP's whenever you enter the Boards?

I actually do. I look in the Square first, I post for the Square first and I do everything else second, unless the thread looks reaally juicy or piques my interest (Pirates v.s. Ninjas). Unfortuantely, for me, i'm not trying like Ozymandius Jones to stretch my OB paramaters. For what? =D

1. What do you [as a member] want to see most in a RP?
me i guess either action or suspense. maybe a little drama but that would be hard to do i think.

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?
HHMM lets see probably M not that i curse alot or anything but gotta keep it real and going on M allows me to keep it real. Although sometimes keeping it real can go wrong....

3. Does humorous fun outweigh killing and gore or vice-versa? [Come on... be honest]
Humorous fun is the way i like to play. even on some of the more serious Rps i do i try and be the comic relief or just have my character joke around.

4. Do you post mainly for RP's whenever you enter the Boards?
well i have nothing to do. So i kinda just sit by my laptop and think all day about what im gonna write about. (work is real slow) so i have more free time to check this out than most people do.

*Scratches chin* Hmmz...

1. What do you [as a member] want to see most in a RP?

I mostly like RPGs to be original and promising. There's been so many RPGs that it does get hard to be creative, so I won't exactly run away from an RPG that looks like something I saw two years ago. Guess sooner or later original will be doing something that hasn't been done in months, but oh well. Promising... don't you think it's a waste if you make an awesome character but never get to use them? Or only get to post once or twice with them? Yeah, I've had my awfully fair share of RPGs that died and characters got wasted, which is why I'll look out for RPGs that look like they'll get somewhere. I normally avoid things with posting orders or a huge set of solid rules to abide by.

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?

Anything, really. Mostly M rated stuff, for no odd reason other than I wouldn't be scared to have my character swear their heart out. Though I don't try to avoid all non-M rated RPGs, heh.

3. Does humorous fun outweigh killing and gore or vice-versa? [Come on... be honest]

I think I'm a fan of violence. I think... anyways, I'd say it should be equal but I'd rather have violence (good violence, though, not stupid violence) and action than humour. Partly because I suck at humour. I don't reckon you can make a totally interesting story off humour, nor can you make one off violence alone... so like a few have said, a balance would be good. Still rather had just a tad more violence than humour, lol.

4. Do you post mainly for RP's whenever you enter the Boards?

I actually only come on here to check out my RPGs/the one's I'm in. I do post everywhere else if I'm bored, though I ain't too bothered about posting anywhere else. I think a few months ago I'd never post anywhere but the Arena, 'cept nowadays my life's getting boring so I need some entertainment elsewhere.

I have stalled this long enough. As one of the first of the 2006 generation of RPers, I should of posted in this a loooong time ago.

1. What do you [as a member] want to see most in a RP?

I want something epic. Well, not necessarily epic, because an RP I have in mind is not epic at all. I don't like mystery stories really, nor do I like comedies that much. I'm more of the action -y type of guy. I know, I should create at least one RP that dose not involve somebody getting shot in the head, just so that I can develop my skills somewhat.

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?

M, because that has the least amount of restrictions.

3. Does humorous fun outweigh killing and gore or vice-versa? [Come on... be honest]

I disagree - if you look at my posts in Pokemon: Legacies, you'll find that I have a good mix of both humor and action. I think that they compliment the two. It is very difficult to keep the reader's attention in ANY story, roleplay or otherwise, if it takes itself too seriously. There needs to be some light moments, or else all of the silliness will probably just make the viewer go away.

4. Do you post mainly for RP's whenever you enter the Boards?

I try. I always look in the Arena first whenever I log onto the site (which is way more frequent than it should be). I'm not much of a talky person - that's why God made the people who invented AIM. No, I like to write plots, and thats what the Arena is for. I try to do some serious discussions sometime, but for the most part, my memories at OtakuBoards will probably remain in the Arena.

1. What do you [as a member] want to see most in a RP?

A strong and original storyline that has the potential to keep my attention.

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?

I don't even look at the ratings when I join RPs. Well, unless it says "M VLS" or something, while the thread starter is like eleven years old. Then you won't see me joining it very soon.

The last time I was involved in the creation of an RP Story, we made it PG. PG gives you enough room to play in and kind of limits the people, so that they won't try to make the RP Stories into a blood bath or one big orgy.

Unless you have a very good storyline and it's absolutely essential to use that rating, I'd advice not to use M.

3. Does humorous fun outweigh killing and gore or vice-versa? [Come on... be honest]

Come on, be honest? Why wouldn't anyone? Humerous fun should outweigh gore in the more fun RPs. Gore should be kept to a minimum. Humerous fun should be found in each post, where gore or violence should not.

4. Do you post mainly for RP's whenever you enter the Boards?

No. The the only times you see me enter RPs is when they are either good and original or when I'm being dragged into it. :)

Just a fun vibe, and some inginuity. I don't want the same old ****.

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?
Whatever's appealing at the time. The rating doesn't matter to me.

Hell. Yes.

No, lol. Shy usually has to force an entry out of me.

Although I am not yet active in the Arena, I would like to be, and I plan to as soon as I am assured of enough free time. Still, I don't believe my opinion would hurt here.

1. What do you [as a member] want to see most in a RP?
Strong, engaging storylines and possibly even a few good sparring threads. I've actually been following the Pokemon: Legacies story since it started because I lke the way it's set up, even though I hold the series itself in disdain.

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?
Any, as long as they're good. I tend to look at an RP's title and storyline/setup before I make judgement. S ratings happen in real life, so I won't go out of my way to avoid one unless it will play a major role in the story. I'lll also steer clear of sappy stuff.

3. Does humorous fun outweigh killing and gore or vice-versa? [Come on... be honest]Neither, as I see it, and neither are necessary to me. I prefer real characters, and if blood and gore happens, it happens. Most of my humor is pretty dry anyway - you know, keep the mood light in the midst of battle and whatnot.

4. Do you post mainly for RP's whenever you enter the Boards?
As of now, no. But then, I'm not actually involved in any RPs yet. Still, I like to stay active in other discussions, so I'd probably keep it pretty even.

Since I'm a poor little n00b, I'm still watching the big shots so I can get a feel for things here. I would love to start getting my feet wet, though; it's just a matter of time, availability, and whether or not I can find someone with experience to check me if I start overstepping myself.

Thank you for posting, Allamorph, and your right, your opinion here wouldn't hurt one bit. I actually wanted for all sorts of members to post on this thread and i'm surprised that my plan's actually coming to light.

Futhermore, I've just wanted for this thread to be a refrence point to look at before or during the creation of an RP. I'm glad that others care as well.

Thank you all for answering the questions so far and please, keep them coming. We can never have too much input.

Loverly idea Tekkaman; not only do we all wonder these things whilst making our own RPs, but I believe I speak for a number of members who would probably wonder about the like when merely signing up for a RP.

1. What do you [as a member] want to see most in a RP?
Grammar; spelling; something catchy.
Having good grammar and spelling helps to layout the RP in a more readable fashion. There's nothing worse than having to read through post after post of punctuation-less crap. In my eyes, when you RP, you must consider yourself a novelist, albiet sometimes a beginner, but a novelist nonetheless. [ie: big words only work when you spell them correctly; the same goes for using them in the correct context ;)]
It seems a lot of RPers seem to go for originality of ideas, instead of the same old spin-offs - I myself will go either way. Sure it's great to see something fresh, but isn't it great just to go back to your roots and enter a spin-off for fun? Nothing beats a well written spin-off [note: well written].

2. What RP rating do you [as a member] usually play in?
Anything goes. Like the majority, I tend to go for whatever catches my eye.

3. Does humorous fun outweigh killing and gore or vice-versa? [Come on... be honest]
Humorous fun all the way, with a bit of action/death/killing/whateveryouwanttocallit as a side dish. Although, like everything in the Square, if you're going to attempt to write anything, make it legible [o.O]...

4. Do you post mainly for RP's whenever you enter the Boards?
OB is and has been purely a way to vent some creativity in the Square whenever I log on. However, occasionally there is a thread on another part of the site which I just can't resist posting in.

Over all, I can't emphasise enough how much spelling and grammar make a difference to your posting. I may not be 100% perfect but no one is [A: because I mainly use Australian spelling - because I'm from the Land of Oz itself; and B: because I feel confident enough to post without using Word and spell check most of the time].

[note: Apart from most of the mods...if not all of them. Once they enter a thread most people generally tend to read in awe at the pure 1337ness of their post quality o.O]
