silpheedpilot
This game is probably one of the coolest, quirkiest brawlers to come around since, heck, Double Dragon. Now, most of you have probably seen the reviews for this game and went; 'Eh. If they say it's mediocre, its probably pretty mediocre.' but you can't hate a game with pseudo-surf music, GREAT fighting mechanics and animations and pretty slick graphics sans for the boring backgrounds. The story is pretty cookie-cutter but funny all around. Gene, the main character, is a crack-up. He's got the witty sayings and the female companion who is always getting him into trouble. The voiceacting isn't terrible but it isn't good and I'm sure the developers wanted it to be that way. The main baddies of the game are all of cliche variety but the good thing about it is that the developer wanted them all that way. The game is merely poking fun at the brawler genre while being dang good at it. This game is all about doling out as much pain to the enemy as possible in numerous funny and serious looking ways from kicking them in the groin to upper-cutting them into the stratosphere, oh but don't worry, they can do it to you too and they will. The camera is always to your back and you use the square button to fight with your multitude of combos that are all customizable and when I mean customizable I mean it. You can string together ANY punch or kick you've bought or found, it's really cool. That's another thing that caught my attention of this game; It's REALLY difficult and I like that. Games nowadays are just too darn easy but God Hand easily takes the cake as one of the harder games out there. Its hard because the enemy does so much damage per hit, there are usually numerous enemies around, and health items are sometimes scarce. Just makes things difficult, but still fun nonetheless. If you're into hard but satisfying action martial-art brawler type games then certainly pick this game up or rent it. It's difficult, looks good, plays good and is definately nothing you've ever played before.
Treble
It is unfortunate that God Hand and Okami will be the last games we will see from Clover Studios. I believe Clover Studios was working on both titles at the time, and most likely more time was dedicated to Okami. Despite mediocre reviews from most gaming review sites, I ended up buying this game a few weeks ago, and I do not regret it. While it may be a low budget game, I am having a blast with it so far. I have never played a game with such quirky style and humor in both the dialogue and combat. Being able to pummel a fat ninja in the face multiple times and then juggle him in the air is so much fun, and the ability to link up any punch or kick in a combo makes it even more exciting. Also, I love the dodge system in this game, being able to sway to the left or right to avoid enemy punches is pretty neat and reminds me of Fight Night. The combat system is much more solid compared to most other beat em up games, and like you said silpheedpilot, the game is pretty challenging, since button mashing will get you nowhere. Of course, this game isn?t for everyone, since the camera can zoom in too close at times, and the tank controls takes a little time to get used to. Also, the voice acting may be too cheesy for people. However, to me these are minor flaws that are common in most other games, and were not that much of a problem to me. I highly doubt anyone else here would be interested in this game, but the pure simplicity and the fun combat system of God Hand makes it one of the top overlooked games, and I thought it could use some more love.
