My dear fellows, things are getting pretty boring around here. I propose we take on a new project. No, it's not another tournament; it's something that will be useful not only to us but to other members as well.

A series of tutorials for those who wish to learn and are interested in graphic design is what I have in mind. The essentials (making borders, image extraction, etcetera) will be covered first and then perhaps we could move on to more advanced and specific subjects like rendering objects from scratch.

Time to do a little public service.

That's actually a very good idea, Delta, seeing as how the population of graphic artists in the OB is rapidly multiplying. I remember when I was first inspired by the artists here and wanted to start becoming graphically inclined as well... *sigh* those were the good old days.

Anyway, I've always hoped that someone would come up with an idea like this and frankly, Delta, I'm glad it was you. :D We should give tutorials about simple and beautiful techniques that would help anyone with graphic questions. I say that even if you are practically a pro at PS, we all need some help now and then, so why not start now? I would love to see how many artists will come up when they've learned a thing or two and make the Art Studio become more lively again.

When this does start up, are you going to take anybodys tutorials? Or only specific people who sign up ahead of time? Just thought I'd ask because I would surely love to join something as useful and resourceful as this. Wow, another great art thread... how long has it been?

Well, I can't wait until this starts up and start to give some of my techniques that I've used forever... this'll be fun! But this also reminds me of a different thread that Retribution started awhile back until it died... something like 'GFX Class' of some sort?

It will be interesting as well to see how artists using different programs do certain things, mm? *PaintShopPro ftw*

In fact, now that sakurasuka seems to have disappeared, I fear I'm left with Boo only in the PSP camp ): sux 2 b me

I'd like to contribute to this, and perhaps it would be a nice idea for people to request tutorials for specific, more detailed pointers? I myself wouldn't mind knowing a few tricks some of my favourite artists use, so it would be beneficial to the seasoned GFXer as well as a beginner.

Nice idea, hope it livens things up around here.

In my opinion, there was too much information squeezed in one thread, and had it continued further, I imagine it would be quite tedious to go through the whole thread just to see if the tutorial you want is there or not. But that's not to say that it was a bad idea; on the contrary, it was well-meant and was able to serve its purpose to many members. It needs a little organization, that's all.

Before we can start the activity proper, we need to list down tutorials that we want to see. We should start with the basics, I think, though tutorials for advanced users are also welcome.

Anyone can put up a tutorial. Each tutorial should be posted in a new thread that will also serve as a platform for questions, corrections and comments regarding the tutorial. That way, we can have the input of the whole community on the subject, yeah?

Aside from an index of tutorials, a list of requested topics will also be kept. Requests, as well as posts stating one's intention of taking on a request, should be directed to this thread.

Here we list tutorials we want to see:

How to Make Borders
How to Extract Images
Anti-Aliasing
How to make brushes
Typography
Transparent Backgrounds
Basic subjects. Advanced stuff are also welcome. Suggest more topics pl0x. :catgirl:

I like this idea alot, and I'm glad you're going to be continuing the general idea of GFX Class.

I may have missed it or something, but if we're going to be posting tutorials in another thread, will there be an index of all tutorials in this thread? And are members allowed to request tutorials?

<3

May I also suggest text (that being placement, size etc) as a tutorial? I know a line of text can make or break a graphic, so it may be helpful to give some hints on where text should be placed in relation to stock etc.

I thought it would be best if we could start early with this project, lest we all grow tired of toying with the idea and completely lose interest. So, if anyone wants to make tutorials for the topics here, please inform me in this thread.

The threads will follow the format below:

Thread title: [T] [difficulty rating] (ex: [T] How to Make Speedlines [A])
[T] - is of course the tag which will identify it as a tutorial
- self-explanatory. Here you put the subject, preferably with the same title as the title in the Request list
[difficulty rating] - the suggested minimum level of expertise needed to comprehend the tutorial.

E : Easy
A : Average
D : Difficult

Cooperative tutorials are also very much welcome.

I would love to do the tutorial on Transparent Backgrounds because it's one of my favorite things to do and I guess I just want to show people how cool it is... I really don't know. XD

Anyways, when you talk about Transparent Backgrounds, you are talking about something like this banner below, right? V

Or perhaps something else that you would like to point out? I'm just trying to make sure so I don't mess anything up.

WAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!! THANK YOU KW! *huggles*

Ehrm. Yes, just like the banner you posted. Oh, you probably know this but just in case: do provide reference pictures. And please indicate which program(s) you're using.

Meanwhile I'll do the Image Extraction tutorial. Toodles!

Heh, thanks for the fangirl-ism, Delta... I needed that. XD

Anyway, okay I'll get started on it right away, but first I have one more question just to make sure I'm doing this correctly:

Do we start the thread on our own or do we send it to you to open? Just wondering because I'm a bit slow today... :P

One thing I would like to see is tips and techniques to help you get the most out of using layers. It may seem pretty basic to regular artists, but I keep running into nifty things you can do and I?d love to see more. For example I recently learned that you can create a duplicate layer. Apply a median noise of about 5 and then change the blending to overlay and play with the opacity of the second layer to help brighten up a dull picture. So I definitely would love a tutorial on how to get the most out of layers as I'm sure there's probably all sorts of tips on how to get different effects from using layers. :)

Opening post updated!
* Added indifference's suggestion
* Added Ezekiel's and cancer's tutorials to the list of projects in progress
Thanks everyone!
Do we start the thread on our own or do we send it to you to open? [/SIZE']
Yes, please open the threads yourselves. That way they'll know which member to ask. ^_^
What if you try gathering the tutorials to unleash a bunch them at one time and request an announcement for the whole idea? >:3
Ah wait. Did you mean a) release tutorials by batches or; b) release them one at a time? (I'm being quite the dunce today.)
How do I make reference pictures for the brush tutorial? I'm not sure how to take screenshots of my monitor activity or anything. Is this a stupid question -_-. I have a feeling it is.
There should be a 'Print Screen' button on your keyboard, unless you're using a laptop. In that case, it may be on a button with another function and you'll have to press it together with another one to make it work. At least, that's what my laptop does. I can't be more specific as it probably varies by model.

I meant posting a batch to start with, so that there's at least a bunch up at the beginning. :x

Okay, I've posted my first tutorial. I hope it's all right. Delta, you can go have a look and tell me if it's what you were expecting. Once everyone posts the current list of tutorials, will we move on to more advanced tutorials soon?
