Ellerby
I know that only a select few of us have Wiis right now, but I decided that this game was good enough to get a thread anyway. And the people who don't have Wii's yet that are hesitant should know that it's actually a lot of fun. Baseball: 1-2 players. 2 Players requires 2 Wiimotes. You hold the Wiimote like a baseball bat (straight in the air behind your head) and swing when the ball gets close to your Mii. If you hit it, you can get either a triple (three bases), double (two bases), single (one base), home run, foul ball (counts as a strike unless you're on your last strike), and Out (when they catch it close to a base or they catch it before it hits the ground). Once your turn is done (there are three innings), you pitch. You can do fastballs and curveballs, overhand throws and underhand throws. Pitching is incredibly easy. Tennis: 1-4 players. 4 Players requires 4 Wiimotes. You hold the Wiimote how you would a tennis racket and hit either front hand or back hand when the ball gets to your character. Very simple stuff. Bowling: 1-4 players. 4 Players can be done with 1 Wiimote. You hold the Wiimote up at your head and press B, holding it down. You bring the Wiimote back as your Mii walks forward and swing the Wiimote forward, letting go of B, as if you were throwing the ball. Takes some getting used to, but fun nonetheless. You can also move your character left and right, and angle shots. Golf: 1-4 players. 4 Players can be done with 1 Wiimote. You hold the Wiimote like a club and swing. But not too hard, it's pretty picky about that. You've got a driver, an iron, a wedge and a putter. There's wind that pushes against your ball, 9 holes, and hills on the green. Lots of fun. Boxing: 1-2 players. 2 Players requires 2 Wiimotes and 2 Nunchuk attachments. You use both the Wiimote and the Nunchuk as hands and just jab away. You can also lift them to your face to block, sway to the left to dodge and punch in combos for extra damage. This is A LOT of fun once you get the hang of it. And, on top of all that, there are also three training modes for each sport, and a daily fitness age tracker (very much like the brain one in Brain Age). I recommend you play this with a friend because it makes the experience a lot more fun but it's still good with just yourself.
Shy
Wii Sports is one of the most important and entertaining games in years, and the first thing to stop me from playing Final Fantasy XII. It's very rare that non-gamers like my boyfriend and roommates stop for a moment to pay attention to what I'm currently playing., and it's even more rare that they want to try the game for themselves! I only have one nunchuck right now, so we can't play boxing on multiplayer, but we've had a lot of fun playing Tennis and Baseball in particular. My beau, who hasn't touched a video game since Frogger, was playing Tennis until two in the morning. This is going to be the game that sells Wii to the masses. My Mom could play this with her friends; anyone could. I love how easy the games are to pick up, and how much depth there is to them. It is also important to say how much exercise you get from is playing Wii Sports. My arms have been sore since I bought the thing, and it's a genuine workout to play a few rounds of Boxing. My boyfriend called me from work to tell me how sore he was from Wii Sports, and also that he's desperate to get back home and play again. Another great feature is being able to play as your customizable 'Mii" in the various games. I created an entire family of Miis so that when my friends come over they can play as themselves. Hopefully Nintendo creates more games where you can play with your Miis, because I thnk they're the coolest damn thing ever. One thing I would have liked to have seen was a "Party Mode," or a more structured way to play the various sports games. The lack of this feature only makes me hungry for the inevitable Mario Party title, and perhaps a Wii Sports sequel? -Shy
silpheedpilot
Ah...The Wii. Greatest invention since...toothpicks! Anyway, down to business. Wii Sports knocked me off my feet with it's awesomeness. I'm serious, I was floored at how responsive each game was and how rediculously easy they were to pick up and play. A personal favorite being the golf, what with the gauge of how hard you hit it and the putting and what not. The other games dazzled me too, like the bowling game. The way the pins are knocked over and how you have to adjust for spin and how the ball really does go faster the harder you swing the Wiimote around. Ah, I love it. Honestly, I think I MAY...MAY like the Wii more than the 360. Only time will tell.
Charles
Honestly, I think I MAY...MAY like the Wii more than the 360. Only time will tell.
Personally, I don't think it's even close yet but that's another story. Wii Sports is awesome. I wish I had more control over my character in Tennis but I'm surprised that my inabilitiy to control my character didn't actually ruin the game. Tennis remained super fun. Bowling is probably my favorite because, along with Golf, it feels like the most complete game in the package. However, Bowling is much more accessible than Golf, giving it the edge. So yeah, I love Wii Bowling. Playing it with others is sure to be a blast. Boxing is okay in short doses. More than anything, Boxing is just a concept that shows you what's possible. In practice, the gameplay is too frantic and confusing. I found it difficult to tell exactly what was going on, if I was being hit, or if my own hits were connecting with my opponent. Much of the enjoyment simply comes from flailing my arms around with whoever I'm playing with. Baseball, like boxing, is sort of a concept. It's too limited and short to really get much out of. Overall, Wii Sports is a lot of fun and a great pack-in.
Shinmaru
Like everyone else, I'm also loving Wii Sports so far. I'm not sure yet whether I like tennis or bowling more, but they're both great. With tennis it's weird at first to not be able to control your character... I got used to it quickly though. Much tougher was stifling the instinct to make long, hard swings as though I were playing real tennis lol. I quickly learned that simple swipes work for both backhands and forehands, haha. It's cool that you can impart topspin and slice on the ball as well. That'll make for some interesting games when I play with my tennis pals. :P Bowling definitely offers the best combination of accesibility and depth. My sister does not bowl at all, and yet she got the hang of it quickly enough to cream me with a 150 game lol. Aiming the ball and putting spin on it is easy too. It's nice to be able to hit shots that I couldn't dream of hitting in real life. :p I think boxing is a bit more fun than reviews indicate, though it does have its share of problems. The controls aren't exactly accurate, so it's somewhat difficult to hit your opponent exactly how you want to hit him/her (especially with body shots, I've found), but it's fun (and tiring) in short bursts if you go all out. My dad unleashed a flurry of fists on my brother in the first round of one of their battles and knocked him out right away; he's yet to hear the end of that, haha. It was hilarious. Baseball I'm actually a bit disappointed with. Hitting is kind of fun, but just doing what is essentially batting practice gets a bit dull after a while. Pitching is a bit more enjoyable; fooling the hitter with different pitches is cool, though like boxing it is tiring after a while. Golf is eh to me right now, because the controls are so sensitive, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it once I get the hang of it. Has anyone gotten deep into the training and fitness modes yet? Some of those are pretty fun. I played the tennis training games non-stop this morning lol. I swear by week's end I'll have a gold medal on all of them. Right now my Fitness Age is 28 (though that's not really saying much since before that it was 70, 30, and 68). :3 I find tennis incredibly hard. I don't know why, but I can't get that freaking fourth target in the third training level. All I've managed to do is put holes in the tiles. Baseball is by far my favourite. Probably just because I rock at it so much. 27/30 hits, 6 homeruns out of 10 pitches, master of bunting, splitter balls, curveballs, fastballs all at 85-93mph. You just don't mess with me and Wii Baseball. Bowling is cool too, I like that training level where you have to get past the obstacles, hehe.

I kept hitting the ball WAY too hard. Damn ball kept flying everywhere except where it was actually supposed to go. I've gotten better but my high score is still only eight targets. :(

I don't know how he's so good at tennis considering he only plays when I'm around (since he doesn't have a Wii yet). Also, apparently when you reach the Pro status in the sports you get "Pro" added to your name and with certain sports you unlock new stuff. :)
Shinmaru
I'm curious what the training mode high scores are like for everyone. Here are mine: Tennis Returns - 53 (Gold) Timing - 32 (Gold) Target - 29 (Gold] Baseball Home Run - 10/10 home runs, 4923 total ft. (Gold) Swing Targets - 53 pts. (Silver) Batting Practice - 27/30 hits (Gold) Bowling Spares - 7 lanes (Bronze) Power - 499 pins (Bronze) Spin - 11 lanes (Bronze) Golf Putting - 6 pts. (Bronze) Green - 113.9 ft. (Gold) Target - 525 pts. (Silver) Boxing Bag - 15 pts. (Bronze) Dodge - 60 pts. (Bronze) Punching - 43 pts. (Bronze) As you can see, tennis is my strong suit, haha; by far, the bulk of my time is spent playing that. It's fun. I also spend a lot of time playing the baseball and golf training mode games... both regular modes are decent in moderation, but their traning mode counterparts are fantastic. The bowling games are fun, but I have a better time just doing regular bowling (i.e. I don't stink as badly :p). Boxing is just whatever at this point lol.
