I hardly needed an entry. :sleep:

My reasons for stopping mod "work" had nothing to do with nostalgic thoughts... although after I became a mod there was definitely less game related traffic than before... this was largely because the Otaku game sites were gone.

It was, partially, the fact that it felt more like a job. I don't spend as much time here anymore, that's for certain... and there's certainly things I don't like now, but let me tell you, there's always things I don't like. I'm a pessimistic person when it comes to internet related things and I think most people realize it.

What really did me in was that one time I had to manually delete about 30 posts full of mutilation, dead people and masochistic porn images thanks to some guy. I didn't have the full power to delete all of his posts automatically. The skin for the boards also put me in a position where I had to see this image (it was one image, but with like 20 images pasted into it) every single time.

I think it was kind of the last straw in many senses. I didn't have as much time or interest in the position, but I also just felt like such a position was really just a futile gesture. With anything you do, the idea that nothing you do will actually have an [i]end[/i] can eventually just get to you. Maybe some people enjoy that aspect of things, but I do not. I have the same problem with my own projects. I don't like when things don't finish. With forums you can never reach a point where nothing more has to be done, largely because you don't know who the hell will register for it.

I obviously "mod" Group Sounds, but beyond asking people not to be total jerks the work isn't comparable to what has to be put into a forum like OtakuBoards in any sense. I can not go to GS for three weeks and not worry about it. You cannot even do that with a day on here.

I do have some input on OtakuBot.

First of all, the base version of him is not an original creation in any sense.

I have some old Famicom Disk games. In the instruction manual for every game is a precautionary section explaining what not to do to the disks. The character shown there was a Famicom Disk System disk.

That's what OtakuBot is. James liked the guy, I redrew it in Illustrator for him and colored it in. There were various changes along the way, but the core was from Nintendo.

I can see people not knowing what the heck it is, but it's not a scale.

I have some full size images of the thing if they need to be posted for posterity... and if James even wants it out. Part of his remaining appeal is kind of the mystery. :cool:

[color=crimson]AEB and Rick Hunter are two amusing stories in this site's history and my own. I don't even really remember 90 percent of the things Kevin ranted about to me.. it was an extensive list of grievances for sure, none of them particularly memorable or interesting. He had dreams of grandeur and didn't realize that his sites were really piss poor, especially when so starkly compared to theOtaku and OtakuBoards. He demanded us to advertise this shoddy knockoff that was nothing more than a crapheap.. it was near impossible to please him, no matter what most of us did. He demanded more members, he demanded more topics, he demanded this and that to the point that I don't really think I cared anymore what he wanted, he was just full of hot air and nothing else. Others put up with it pretty well but I just couldn't take him anymore.

We were all from OB as the entry says so most of his seemingly delirious anti-OB rants were pretty unintentionally humorous. I had been a mod at OB for a period of time during 2002-2003 and had seen the effort James and others put into making this site as successful as it is.. Kevin just didn't have the same sort of dedication. He had the zeal, sure, but it was too much. It blinded him to logic, lol.

More than that his personality was just.. flawed. I mean, people have pros and cons but this guy just.. was a ****ing idiot a huge majority of the time. I mean, look at the stuff about his "movie". Then consider the fact he seriously was trying to convince all of us that, you know, it was factual. That's pretty quirky.

Ginny and Tony are worthy members for entries (no matter what you say Tony). They were pretty important to the site and were friends to many. I couldn't write extensively about them but I'd put forward such members as Sephiroth, BabyGirl and LadyMaciodah as also being worth some of the earlier entries into the list of members. Haha, maybe Kuja should get an early entry too.. in a nice red font with plenty of winks.

GroupSounds is where all the cool people hang out and yes Papa Smurf is really good at arguing about topics.. even across multiple message boards![/color]

[color=#9933ff]Digimon Forum: Man. Anyone who was a part of the Digimon forum group knows exactly what I mean when I say "Remember the Digimon Forum?" You get this warm nostalgic feeling, remembering the people that felt like close friends or family.

Some of the prominent members of the Digimon forum include Ginny, Sara (Cera, man so loooong ago!!), Shy, Rokas, Blanko, calumon_luver (I think she changed her name?), Sandy (haha, yes yes, you WERE a Digimon Forum-er!!!), Solo Tremaine, I think Baron Samedi came in there once in a while. Well, and myself, I guess...

One of the most popular threads was a sticky thread that Shy I believe initiated to clean up the Digimon forum a bit. It was a thread to show off all your Fan Made Digimons (FMDs), and worked well for its purpose.

One of the best things about the Digimon forums was Devidramon's (was that his name?) rants about Digimon Tamers. Every week after it aired on Saturday mornings, I could hop online and read an amusing, sarcastic play by play of the entire episode. His posts were not mean to put down Digimon as an anime, but point out the strengths and weaknesses of the show, and to make us laugh.

I will have to admit that his rants influenced me enough to make Tamers one of my favorite seasons. ^_^

Another part of the Digimon forum history was a thread about "Digimon appearing in real life" and the "interactions" that members "had" with Digimon. It went on for pages and pages, I think to around 57 pages (standard # of posts per page), until Shy, newly appointed to... Category Mod? (Supermod was it?) closed it down in an effort to clean up the Digimon forums.


I realise this Digimon entry is incomplete, so anyone else who cam help with it, please do. I hardly touched on Ginnylyn's, Sara's or Ben's roles in the forums, but I don't think I have nearly enough knowledge to do that; nor is it my place to. Anything anyone else would like to add about the Digimon Forums, feel free. ^^;;;

(This was well before there was a designated forum for written works.) [url=http://www.otakuboards.com/showthread.php?t=19895]One of his poems[/url] was posted on theOtaku's main page in 2001 or 2002.

Desert Shadow (also "DS") frequently used the phrase "silly bucket" and at one point became head of the Silly Bucket Brigade, an early signature club. This became a long-running and popular inside joke among people who were members of the club or participated in his threads.

His favorite number was 72, and he threw a [url=http://www.otakuboards.com/showthread.php?t=1039]7nd Post Party[/url] to celebrate when his post count reached that number.

Notable trivia: DS always posted in[/color][/size] [b]plain bold text[/b]. [size=1][color=#b0000b] This was before custom font size/colors were available (?), so he was the first person to have a "signature" posting style.

I'd be willing to serve as a moderator of Otakupedia is Sara and Nerdsy would moderate with me. Between the three of us I think we cover quite a bit of territory.

Roxie: Don't get me started on Devidramon! Although I hated him at the time, I find him to be one of the digi-peeps I miss the most. Other noteworthy digi-peeps include Shawn, Digital_Monster (Krissy,) and Renee. Shawn is happily dating a man in Las Vegas last I heard. I wonder how Ginny feels about that. Krissy and DM two disappeared entirely shortly after the Digimon forum was closed.

BabyGirl (registered 2001, real name Jenna) was a long-time popular member of OtakuBoards. She quickly (within a month or two of registering) became a moderator of the General Discussion forum, and she was later appointed a "Goddess" (then the equivalent of a Category Moderator).

Babygirl was an enthusiastic Star Wars fan, and participated with Justin in the story [url=http://www.otakuboards.com/showthread.php?t=12175]Star Wars Our Way[/url], one of OB's early dramatic RPG/collaborative storytelling efforts.

She was also notable for her love of dance and photography, as well as being popularly considered one of the most attractive members of the boards.

Along with Queen Asuka and Lady Mac, Babygirl was one of the three "Adam's Angels."

She was largely identified with Faye Valentine, as many of her avatars featured the character.

Safer Sephiroth (registered 2001, username later changed to simply Sephiroth; also called "Safer" or "Sephy") was an early legendary figure in OtakuBoards history. He became a moderator soon after registering and was later appointed an administrator in what was considered by the general populace of OB to be "record time." He was also one of the first members to break the 1000 post mark.

Renee (registered 2000) was a member of the close-knit Digimon forum, as well as a moderator there. She sported a Palmon avatar, and was known for her habit of *sipping tea* in her posts.

She was the first (possibly second) female moderator of OtakuBoards, and the first female member to reach the 1000 post mark. She was also one of the youngest moderators, at eleven (later twelve) years old during the time she held her staff position.

Although she largely disappeared after the switch to OB V3 in August 2001, Renee continued to lurk and post for several years. Her last post was in 2004.

Thimoc was one of the most notable early members of the boards. Having joined during the early months of V1, he quickly made a name for himself with his offbeat (and often nonsensical) humor.

After IM_GENGAR had left the board, thimoc found himself with no competition for top poster and subsequently hit nearly every posting milestone during the V1/V2 era. He was the first to reach 2000, 3000, and 4000 posts, and was the only member to hit 4000 before the post counts were reset. It should also be noted that most, if not all, of his posts would be considered spam today.

Like most of the prominent members during V1, thimoc eventually turned on the very boards he frequented. Fed up with the sudden enforecment of rules brought about by the wave of new moderators, thimoc began rebuking all authority and mass-spammed the forums. This caused his account to be deleted, effectively giving the status of top poster to another would-be spammer, Ulitmia.[/end]

That should be checked for accuracy, and I have no idea what happened to thimoc afterwards, so if anyone knows anything notable, that would help.

Also, I feel I should request a section for notable spammers, such as Big Poppa Hump, SSJ4 Gokou/Altron Gundam/Flame of Recca, will2x, and whoever I'm forgetting.

I don't know if this is worth mentioning, but kuji-wuji's original handle was osu_waterpolo. Possibly oso_waterpolo, but I'm leaning on the former.[/COLOR]

[font=arial]Yeah, PHP is an issue I think...I haven't heard from Justin in a little while so I don't know whether or not I'm going to be able to move that aspect forward. I'll talk to Adam and see what we can come up with.

But if you (or you and Charles, even) are willing to update a site that uses MediaWiki or something, that'd be great. For now we can continue using the thread while we investigate other options for the future - it would certainly be good to have a permanent and fully-updatable Otakupedia running. Having a comprehensive library of OB historical information is something I have been interested in for a while, but it just doesn't work when only a single person does it - you really need the full involvement of the community. And frankly, OB deserves to have its history recorded...I can think of very few online forums that have such a rich and diverse background.

And Deb, I think we'd need a much longer article on you, as you have been one of the more significant members over the years. I'm sure even some existing member articles will be beefed up too. I don't know who wants to write that one - I don't feel comfortable writing any full member articles, because I always worry I'll forget something important, lol. But when I remember things I'm happy to chime in and bring them up, so the original piece can be edited.[/font]

It chronicled the trivial adventures of OB members in a virtual OB world as they went about a life filled with danger, intrigue, and Junior High-esque moments, battling n00bs and exploring and stuff. Needless to say, it was pretty awesome, and everyone wanted [i]in on that[/i]. Cameos by members not related to the plot were in the high 30s, and being included in Enter the Net in even a cameo role was (and still is, among some) a badge of honour. Having two entire chapters revolving around yourself, like that handsome DeadSeraphim guy, was like ascending to Godhood. Enter the Net was that influential.

Unfortunately, influence is a double edged sword, and it soon spawned dozens of half-baked OB fan fictions by people who either liked the original concept enough to emulate it, or wanted to one up it. These ranged from serious and gritty, to silly and forgettable. To date, few OB fan fictions have been as good as the original.[/SIZE][/COLOR][/FONT]

Kill Adam was a groundbreaking RPG created by James in November 2003. It garnered much praise and attention due for its adult content, high production values, and the quality of members who participated in it. These included Shinmaru, Shy, Queen Asuka, Generic NPC #3, Heaven?s Cloud, Babygirl and Hinata (formerly sweetreyes,) who never officially posted.

Directly inspired by Kill Bill, the original premise was to create an RPG where OtakuBoards members could run around a highly stylized world fighting Tarantino-esque versions of one another. Almost immediately the idea grew to feature Adam, theOtaku?s site founder, and the popular OB clique ?Adam?s Angels? in prominent roles.

The RPG was structured after the films which inspired it, and Kill Adam?s story unfolded in self-contained ?chapters,? which often took place out of chronological order. Kill Adam is the story of two assassins, Jamie and Joshua, who lost their adopted son at the hands of their crime lord boss. In an effort to strike revenge on Adam for their loss the lovers began an all-out war against him, with much of the action taking place on the streets of Japan. These battles were incredibly graphic in nature and directly inspired the creation of Arena Thread Ratings.

Kill Adam was also the first official use of the ?Chapter System? of RPG posting. Prior to this all RPGs were much more freeform, and writers would post as often as they like. With the Chapter System in place things became much more structured, and players could only post when the RPG?s creator felt it necessary to the story. Kill Adam also featured html and music within posts in a way that hadn't been seen before, barring notable exceptions such as Project Gamer.

High production values and strong writing made the RPG a hit both with participants and non-participants alike. However, it did create added pressure for members in the Adventure Arena to focus on the aesthetic value of their projects rather than simply the writing. This ?Post Kill Adam World? of The Arena became less active than it was in the past, but the writing was stronger than it had ever been.

This pressure was also felt by the participants of Kill Adam. Month-long gaps would occur between posts, and the first half (Kill Adam: Volume 1) concluded in June 2004. The second half of the story (Kill Adam: Volume 2) began a month later, but currently remains unfinished due to the same problems that plagued the first.
