cancer
I'm not 18 yet, soon to be though, and I smoke. My parents probably know, and question me, but I do deny it. Dragon Warrior
Haha, ohhh, John :) But yes, I agree. If you can (and are willing to), you oughta try kickin' the habit. Is there a particular reason you smoke? If not, what drove you to do it in the first place? If it's mainly just addiction now, you have better reason to go cold turkey.
Guest Heero yuy
HA.
I noticed that too. coincedence, I don't think so. j/k. Cancer could not even be addicted, I know alot of kids who think it's cool to smoke and they don't even inhale...and if you don't, I wouldn't waste my money on "smoking". Nicotine gum is not cheap. I smoke off and on, but I'm 18. My parents still disaprove and I still don't tell them. But they have caught me. I say, just say you have to find out for yourself. Isn't curiousity in human nature? visualkei
I'd say smoke in front of them almost nonchalantly is better than hiding and getting caught. Then they'll lecture/ask you, then you can explain. Bringing it up like that out of the blue sounds like you're doing something wrong and have to confess to them. Then again, you denied it in the first place, which I think lying is just making things worse, especially when your parents probably know you're smoking since they're questioning you. Maybe you should just quit and wouldn't have to worry about this.
The13thMan
Smoking is bad, blah blah blah. Ok, besides that i'd say....don't tell them? It depends on if you're cool with them reacting negatively. I seriously doubt there's anything you can do to have them take it easier...it's not good news to hear. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you like it if your kid one day told you that they were addicted to a drug that kills people every day? Not too good... I'd wait till you're out of the house before you told them...that way they can't punish you, only react.
silpheedpilot
Smoking makes you look rad. Don't quit. ...and since I'm dangerous and I like to live life on the edge I'll tell you what you gotta do to keep your parents on your side. Bring a friend over. A friend that smokes will make this easier. Then go ahead and smoke in the house when your parents are out. Blame it on the smoker friend. Your parents won't suspect you at all because the blame is on your friend who clearly smokes. Done and done. Now all you gotta do from here on out is tell your parents to stay out of your business if they suspect you smoke. Tell them you're your own person and they can suck it. They'll just think you're growing up and are afriad of life on your own, so when they do find out you've been smoking they'll just attribute that to a life lesson. You're in the clear. Smoke till your lungs explode.
Aaryanna_Mom
As a parent I can tell you that on some level your parents are going to be disappointed that you lied to them. I don?t know what the legal limit for smoking is where you live, but in the USA it?s 18, so you?ve been engaging in an activity that is illegal. Not that you need me to tell you that. But to a parent it reflects on you or rather you feel it does that you were too clueless or lacked the necessary parenting skill to keep your kids from making what you perceive as bad choices. Anyway, what I am getting at here is there are two choices I can suggest. You could wait until you are 18 and then either apologize to your parents about lying to them and fess up. Or you could tell them now instead of waiting. I think if it were me I would think about how understanding my parents would be. If you think they wouldn?t then it might be best to wait. Or simply not say anything at all. Most of all I would make sure you at least include some form of apology for deceiving them when they do find out. Whether it?s through you telling them or them seeing you smoke. They may not accept it very well, but later once things calm down you will be able to say hey, I know you are disappointed in me, and I already said I was sorry, so lets put this behind us. I may be unrealistic, but I know it drives me a bit nuts when a kid does something and instead of just fessing up and apologizing, they just justify it and blame someone else. Maybe other parents are different, but I?ve always appreciated honesty. It doesn?t mean they still didn?t get grounded though. I was just more lenient on the time they were grounded for the offense. ;)

How could you stop before providing specific examples of what you are talking about?! What a bummer. But yeah, I can only voice what everyone else has said: smoking is cool. If you have cool parents, they'll probably want to copy you after they see how much cooler you are with a butt in your mouth. Otherwise, it's your parents fault for being uncool that you haven't told them.
pooperson
I work at a Sports Bar, and every day I come home smelling like cigarettes. In fact, I'm wearing my work pants now, and I can smell it horribly. So your parents probably know. And if they're anything like my parents, they'll be more pissed at your for lying than for smoking. And I would recommend quitting, but that's just me... I'm allergic to cigarette smoke... :animeswea [Something I'm glad to have found out while I'm still underage]! Ellerby
Guh. I hope you're not one of those kids who smoke to be cool. Because even though people say nobody does that, they do. You have no idea how many kids at my school make it so obvious that they just want to be cool. I think like half of the teenagers that smoked in high school quit as soon as they graduate. If this is the case with you... I hate you. But anyway, if that isn't the case and you don't exactly want to tell your parents to their face, just leave obvious clues and when they ask you about it fess up. That's what my brother did, lol.

If you intend to stop I'd do what Aaryanna_Mom suggested and tell them along with an apology for not telling them. If they use to smoke then they will most likely want to help you stop smoking. If your intent is to simply not need to hide it then I would wait until you are eighteen. Though if you are still living at home, it probably won't make any difference as you are still going to be viewed by them as a kid to some extent. I think parents just can't help but think of their own kids like that. I know my parents were shocked when they realized just what was in some of the adult video games I have. And the fact that I was over twenty one didn?t seem to translate into I?m an adult for them. Though they?ve since gotten over the shock, they just don?t ask me how I?m enjoying my games anymore when I get a new one. ;)
Baron Samedi
The reasoning for your name becomes clear... But honestly, why smoke anyway? It's a disgusting habit, leaves a nasty smell, stains fingers / teeth etc. and isn't even cool [omg h34rtbr34kz!]. But this lying schtick you have going seems to be working fine so far, so sure, keep it up.
Red
It's pretty darn likely your parents know you're smoking because you stink - unless they smoke themselves, that is. Regardless of how you go about it you're going to be told to stop, because you shouldn't be smoking. No one should ;) So just tell them and get it over with! I thought it was rather funny. I just have to ask, if you're under eighteen what are you smoking for? I mean what kind of stress are you under that you can't just beat the crap out of something? Unless of course you're under stress because you're smoking and trying to hide it from your parents. And if that's the case then you brought it on yourself. Sorry it has to be said.
Charles
I'm sure that your parents already know that you're doing it. This will all play itself out. Just keep going on as you are. If they ask you about it directly again, consider just fessing up so that you don't have to feel so guilty/sneaky.
Gavin
Interesting, most interesting. As a piece of advice, I personally think you should give them up rather than trying to hide the fact that you're smoking. However seeing as you're nearly eighteen, it's your own choice, so really all you need to do is either admit to your parents that you smoke now and have been smoking for a while, or you can continue to try and hide it. Though I do agree with Charles when he says your parents probably know already, and are just waiting for you to be honest enough with them. I've got two younger siblings, one fifteen who smokes and one seventeen who's just given them up, so I do actually know what I'm talking about here.
KatanaViolet
I'm surprised they wouldn't know! My mom could always smell it on me, one day she asked and I said yes. I still smoke and I'm 20 years old now. I'd really like to quit, and honestly, I'd recommend it to you. That way you won't have to tell them... But if worst comes to worst, you could just get up and go out for a cigarette while they're home.
