Japanese Rock/Metal

Aye, J-Rock isn't filled with poppish bands such as HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR and Orange Range. There's actually some heavy bands like:

-deathgaze
-girugamesh
-Dir en grey
-12012
-Kagerou

and tons more.

Then there's Japanese Metal bands. Unfortuantely, there's not many under the genre: Intestine Baalism, Sigh, Galneryus, and Onmyouza are all quality J-Metal bands.

Then there's bands like Boris and Melt-Banana which will induce hypnosis/seizure if listened to.

The best Japanese rock band I've personally heard is Green Milk from the Planet Orange. They're kind of in the progressive rock, post-rock category. They take some time to get into, but they're really damn good.

Boris is also fun. They change genres between releases, covering all sorts of different rock angles. As such it's difficult to recommend any one album, but I think trying a mix of songs might be a good idea.

There's others I enjoy in passing, (edit, found it) like Polysics and Quruli ( I see people argue over how to actually spell the band's name, but this seems to be the most used).

I've got this one rurouni Kenshin CD with two 8:30 minute metal songs on it that are totally badass. Once headbanged so hard to them I couldn't move for a day afterward.

...apart from that i don't know anything much about J-metal. I have listened to some boris and their drone stuff nearly put me to sleep. I can't deal with 1 note for 4 minutes.

Drone is pretty boring in general... but as mentioned, they cover various genres. They even have a plain old rock album.

Yes, once again Boris has many genres and for the most part Boris are excellent.

Anyways the best Japanese Rock Band that I have found to exist is The Flower Travellin' Band which is a mix of King Crimson and Black Sabbath with over the top vocals. They are noted as the band who covered Black Sabbath first with their own version of Black Sabbath. An album to look for by them is Satori. If you like King Crimson or Black Sabbath check them out you will not be disappointed.

Envy, excellent Japanese ambient hardcore. They're definitely one of my top 20-or-so favorite bands. :D

And I got 666 by Melt-Banana, as well as a few other albums of theirs on my computer. I just... don't get it. I'd probably like them better without her weird vocals.

Has anyone heard these guys before? They are from Japan and are starting to branch out with a scheduled US tour. Their myspace page at www.myspace.com/officialdirengrey had some tracks if you wanted to have a listen. My coworker at UMGD and me personally really like their instrumentals but that's just us. Anyways feel free to let me know what you think and if you like em enough their new cd is on sale at fye for about 10 bucks (http://shop.fye.com/product.aspx?sku=203530015&loc=50244).

I merged your thread with the already existing Japanese rock and metal thread. Please be sure to check to make sure there isn't already a thread for something you want to talk about. PM me or any other mod if you have any questions. -Clurr

Aye, Deg is a great band, however I'm not fond of thier latest work. It's too screamo; I think this is Deg's way of trying to be mainstream in the U.S.

If you like Deg, there's plenty of bands just like them in the first post i made.

Dir en grey are an EXCELLENT band, I'm really looking forward to their next album.
I know their newer stuff is very different from what most people come to expect from them. However it's still very good. I just hope they don't do all screaming now because Kyo has such a great voice and though I enjoy the screaming as well, it's nice to really highlight how talented a vocalist he really is. I will also check out the bands listed in the initial post.

I can't say I like DeG but I love "higeki wa mabuta wo oroshita".

Group Tamashii's such an eccentric band that I have doubts about them being labeled J-Rock. But then again, there were J-Rock icons with even weirder tastes (say, X-Japan).

Speaking of X-Japan, does anyone know which band did Kiyoharu and Shoji (the ones who covered "Beauty & Stupid" in hide TRIBUTE SPIRITS) come from?

X Japan has "weird taste" because they are the band that some argue started the still ongoing tradition of Visual Kei. DEG and other Visual Kei bands probably wouldn't have hapened without their influence.

My favorite band of all time is Zwei! They are a J-rock themed duo consisting of Ayumu and Megu. They have some of the best music I've heard in awhile. I hope everyone gives them a listen. I highly reccomend them!
