Guy: Thanks... I promised my mum that I was going to call her after I talked to the girl of my dreams.

Me: ... Um... If you want to call your mum, you can use my phone...

I'm not dating the guy who used this on me, nor will I ever date him.

So I was wondering... Why do people use pick up lines? Do they actually work? And what were your best/funniest/worst pick up lines that you have used/heard?

(And no I?m not him ;)) I try to avoid pickup lines because I want to sound sincere when I ask a girl out. But its not always easy to tell the girl you are interested in that you like them and thus some guys fall back on pick-up lines.

I?ve never heard anyone use one, other than a few random times in high school, but it?s been long enough that I don?t remember what the actual line was. I do remember that none of the guys who used one ever got a date with the girl in question though.

I've always tried to stick with the simple one of [I]would you like to go to a movie with me[/I]. And for the most part it's always worked. ;)

I was trying to say that for some guys using pick up lines is a sign of being nervous and not to be irritating or like a few I?ve seen who are arrogant and think they are gods gift to women.

So I was trying to say if he was just nervous, don?t be to hard on him for using a pickup line. ;) I?ve got a few guy friends who freeze up when they try to talk to a girl they like and in the end they fall back on some cheesy line. Sometimes the girl can see that they are just nervous and other times they dismiss them due to the pickup line without a second thought. And it?s kind of a shame since they?re pretty nice guys. So does that clear it up?

That would never work on me, because I believe in sincerity above all. I mean... if the guy talks to you and has already "second thoughts"... how can you really get to know him? The person he really is.
Well, that's just the way I see relationships, and I tend to be really boring on that matters - I'm a "be always yourself!" defender.
But even I couldn't resist to one particularly

On a party, waching people dance, neither of us enjoying it:

I believe he wasn't flirting at me, just wanted to talk... And I would only start dating him months later.

OK, this is the worlds worste pick-up line. Before I tell you, I want you all to know I have never used it. I am clean. My friend told me and another friend to use it and we both laugh about it to this day (it was like 3 months ago). Anyhow if you think it's work please say so.

Boy: Fat penguin.
Girl: huh? (me and said other friend figured there would be a slap or some sort of kick placed here)
Boy: I needed something to break the ice.

And of coarse. The guy who came up with it had no idea what he would say afterwards. Now girls, would you or would you not; think the guy was calling you fat if he walked up out-of-the-blue and said "Fat penguin." ???

The guy who used the pick up line on me was actually a classmate, and we've talked before... So at the time, I found it very strange for him to use a pick up line, when we were already friends (since the ice was already broken at the time)... But you guys are right, it did break the ice even further. I went up to him and our other classmate after the pick up line, and we had fun talking. The guy had to go to class, so I was left in the library talking to the other classmate. I am now dating him... So the pick up line did work... But not to the user's advantage... :animeswea [/COLOR]

Kind of like when a girl you know acts all shy and tongue tied around you even though you?ve talked several times before. At that point it?s kind of annoying.

That?s kind of funny that you ended up dating the other classmate. I almost pity the other guy as it sounds like he missed out. ;)

In the end I really hate using pickup lines, especially when a simple conversation of hi my name is Darren what?s yours? Is pretty easy to start and not that hard to follow up on. From asking about what they like in music, to read, or what they like as far as school goes. It?s always seemed pretty straightforward to me.

And when you want to date, the simple one I already mentioned [I]would you like to go to a movie with me[/I] is straight and to the point. Sure you're going to have awkward moments if the girl isn't interested in dating, but unlike a pickup line there's no doubt as to what you have in mind.

I've never ever used pick up lines and probably never will. I'm my opinion - pick up lines are for scrubs.

A pick up line won't matter if you aren't a good human being in the first place. I mean, it might get someones attention, but if someone I don't know just came up to me and said something stupid like that I wouldn't be attracted to them at all. I would move away from them and maybe ask them to leave me alone.

I don't mean to be rude or anything. I don't see how they would be effective at all though. Sure it has gotten some friends and some spouse (Only for that one guy/girl), but for all of the other times, I doubt it has done a thing besides made the other think that you are a creep. I sure would think they are if they said, "Hey, wanna go kill all humans?" "Sure I do, starting with you."
