Magus
Heh, with New Years being around the corner, and me being bored, just thought I'd get a little feedback from everyone. I got this list from Gamespot so.. "shrugs" Best GBA game - Super Robot Taison: Original Generation (Beating out Drill Dozer, Final Fantasy V, Scruge: Hive, and Super Robot Taison: Original Generation 2) Best Nintendo DS game - Elite Beat Agents (Beating out Clubhouse games, Metroid Prime: Hunters, New Super Mario Bros, Yoshi's Island 2) So far I haven't heard of most of these games.... Maybe I should've went to IGN. Best PSP game - Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (Beating out Daxter, Mega Man Powered Up, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, WTF) Best Gamecube game - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Beating out Baten Kaitos Origins, FIFA 07, Lego Star Wars 2: The Original Trilogy, Tomb Raider: Legend) Best Playstation 2 game - Final Fantasy XII (Beating out Bully, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, MLB 06: The Show, Okami) Best Xbox game - NCAA Football 07 (Beating out Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, FIFA 07, Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure, NCAA Football 07, Toca Race Driver 3) Best Xbox 360 game - Gears of War (Beating out Dead Rising, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas, Viva Pinata) Best Playstation 3 game - Resistance: Fall of Man (Beating out Call of Duty 3, Fight Night Round 3, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Ridge Racer 7) Best Nintendo Wii game - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Beating out Madden NFL 07, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, Trauma Center: Second Opinion) Best PC game - Company of Heroes (Beating out GTR 2, Medieval 2: Total War, Neverwinter Nights 2, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) Game of the Year - Gears of War (Beating out Bully, Company of Heroes, Dead Rising, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Final Fantasy XII, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Okami, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas, Viva Pinata) That's their list. What are yours? (Give reason btw) Because I had a huge set back this year pretty much. (Not landing a job.) The only game that I've played that came out this year was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. (I'm not even sure if that came out this year) So that's my game of the year. I didn't pay much attention to the story, but the graphics were pretty ^_^. Sometimes it can be a little edgy while in the middle of playing the game because I look forward to being able to use the surrounding enviroment, but there's nothing there that you can use. The soundtrack is nice. It fits the game. Controls were nice even though it's your typical button masher. For once I wish Capcom made an Onimusha game where you can jump. Difficutly. While the enemy A.I. is nothing compared to Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry 3, the enemy A.I. in this is definitely no slouch either though. That is when you start facing off against stronger / advance version of your normal genma's. And when they start swarming you, you'd start to wonder when they'll let up. That's all I can give. Hopefully 07 will be a little leninent on me so I can try out some newer games.
Kenshin DX
Gow stealing game of the year from ZTP is a crime :animesigh . Even X-Play gave Zelda GOTY and they suck at their jobs. The rest of the games were no freaking duh. MG won something Gow won, Zelda won, the Wii and PS3 only have one supreb game each title so no surprise there. Im glad an original title won for best DS game. GBA - Who cares? DS- I agree im glad to see an original title take a GOTY award. PSP- Agree great game and a lot better than MG AC!D GC-No duh Zelda. PS2- FFXII of course would win. I think there were far more deserving games. Xbox-They still make games for that? Wii-Duh Zelda PS3-Duh only has one good game being Restiance PC - I agree with company of heros GOTY-Should be Zelda for GC or Wii. Gow is a great game but no wherre near as engaging as Zelda. Meh...this generation wasnt much due to the fact the Wii and PS3 just came out. Im sure next year with Brawl, MarioGalaxy, Battlion Wars 2 , DMC4,MGS4 etc... It will be a seriously great year for gaming. Zelda FTW.
Hanabishi Recca
I don't play many games for some of the systems and some other, I don't have the system :o Anyway, I can say the GOW was a good game. I think that if you like getting the background into the game then that would be a good game for you (Phenom) because you can take cover in almost anything. It seemed pretty short though (Time passed by quickly but it actually took a long time) thats because me and my brother beat it the same day we got it (we got it as a Christmas present - played it into the next day around 3 o' clock we beat it). Thats all I have to say. Not going on to the list. Best Gamecube game - I've only played Windwaker and the collectable on this system :( Still Zelda though - yep yep yep! Best Playstation 2 game - Soul Calibur 3 Best Xbox game - I've been playing Morrowind (I don't exactly think its the best but I haven't played anything else really) Best Xbox 360 game - (I've only played) Gears of War Best Nintendo Wii game - (Only played) Wii Sports Best PC game - (Only played) Prey (fun fun fun it was) Game of the Year - Gears of War
Treble
Honestly, I have yet to play most of the games on that list since I still have a big log of older games that I have not even beated yet. However, I actually thought this was a pretty good year to be a gamer with games like Gears of Wars, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Final Fantasy XII, Baten Kaitos Origins, Okami, Bully, Viva Pinata, Resistance: Fall of Man, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and so on. Even the handhelds had a good year because the psp and the ds had alot to offer this year. As for my list, well, like I said I only played a select few of the many great games this year. GBA - I still care about the GBA and Drill Dozer gets my vote for being one of the greatest original platformer to come out in years. Nothing beats drilling enemies and walls that block my way. If only Earthbound 3 got translated and released here in the U.S., then that would be a dream come true. Gamecube - Zelda: Twilight Princess for the win, actually I did not even beat it yet, because I'm taking my time and don't want this epic adventure to end. And there wasn't that much for the GCN this year to begin with. Xbox 360 - My brother and I had a blast playing Co-op in Gears of Wars. Although it is a bit on the short side, it is truly one of the most intense and eye appealing third person shooting game I have ever played. Game of the Year - N/A, if I had the money to play more games then I would cast a vote, but I can't really make decision right now. Yeah that wraps up my list since I couldn't afford most of the other consoles and handhelds. Even if I did I highly doubt I would have the time to play them.
TheResplendent
I disagree with a lot of the received but I will just nominate from the systems i've played and the games i've played, so my choices may also be disagreeable. I have played quite a large variety of 06 releases though, so lets see: Best Gamecube game - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: This pretty much goes without saying, it was one of nintendo's most anticipated releases in years and delivered big time. Not to mention it is perfect on the gamecube, I wouldn't trade it for the Wii copy at all. I havn't played through all of it yet, but i'm looking forward to doing so. Best Playstation 2 game - So long as Metal Gear Solid 3 has been released in 06 in some shape or form, it will win GoTY for PS2 from me. Just as i proclaimed MGS to be the best non-RPG game to be made for the PS, MGS3 takes that title for the PS2. It's my favorite one in the series and it truly deserves to be here in the form of MGS3: Subsistence. Much more so than that dissapointment of the year, Final Fantasy XII. This is coming from a huge FF fanboy now mind you, but you'd have to be pretty damn blind not to see the overwhelming faults in FFXII that absolutely destroy it's legacy's credability. After beating it a few days ago, I can't remember being that angry at a game I payed money for. I won't go into it here, perhaps if I feel up to it i'll post my feelings in the FFXII thread. Best Xbox 360 game - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - I've only played a little bit of it at a friend's house, and already I believe it should be GoTY for Xbox360. I've been dying to get it ever since then, but my PC won't support it, I don't have a 360 (and don't want one), and don't have a PS3 (hopefully will by my birthday)...so the anticipation for the time I get to own it finally is killing me. Best Nintendo Wii game - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for pretty much the same reason as GC. Granted I havn't played any other releases for Wii other then Red Steel and Wii Sports (which obviously don't hold a candle to LoZ), but i'm fairly certain none of the other releases could come close either. Best PC game - Most PC games i've been playing this year have not been 06 releases, but i'd nominate The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion having played it for 360. I can't imagine there being much of a difference between the two versions. Game of the Year - I just want to say thank god GS didn't name FFXII GoTY here. I'd probably go with my my choice for PS2 just because i have more love for MGS3 then any of the others I've played. This is also taking into consideration that I have beaten it multiple times, where as I have not gotten far in LoZ:TP yet and have only played about an hour or two of Oblivion. So it's only fair that I vote MGS3: Subsistence in for my GoTY. So yeah, that pretty much narrows it down to 3 games spanning 6 categories. I loved Gears of War, but just not enough to be better then any of the games on my list here.

I haven't played either of them so "shrugs" Maybe I really should've used IGN's top games list, but then again, their list was too frickin long. Maybe because of multiplayer.. "shrugs" I don't know. Not even going to act like I know. I feel the same way. This year wasn't as good as I was hoping it'd be. (even with me not having a job the whole year.) The games just weren't great enough for me to even attempt a rent. (I only have a ps2.... >_>) ^_^. 2010DigitalBoy
Best XBox 360 game: Well, my vote probably has to go to Gears of War as well. Between stunning visuals, amazing combat, and the best multiplayer I've played since Halo 2, GOW is a definite win. The cover system is downright freaking brilliant, and nothing is quite as satisfying as chainsawing your opponent in half. The single player has a lot of things that make it unique from regular run-and-gun shooters, and the up-close-and-personal gameplay style really draws you in. Best PS2 Game: Well, it's really hard for me to say. I only just got FFXII, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner, and Disgaea 2, all of which I had wanted all year. Other than those I don't think I've even got any games that were released this year.I'll have to come back to this one after playing more of those 3 games. So far, FFXII has been freaking amazing, though. Nintendo Wii: Once again, I only just started playing this with LOZ TP and COD 3 so I haven't really had much time with either, but my brother's been playing the hell outta The Leend of Zelda Twilight Princess, and so far it's been brilliant. Hyrule is huge and fun, combat is intriguing, and the new weapons are a joy. Nintendo DS: There were a surprisingly large amount of great games which came out for the DS this year, although they're a bit more my brother's foray then my own. My brother says his favorite was Final Fantasy 3, which I have hardly toughed, but it does seem neato and I love the controls. Of what I've played, Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 March of the Minis was a pretty darn cool little game and very addictive. I was actually pretty disappointed by Metroid Prime DS. The level design was just really poorly done. Game Boy Advanced: I think the only GBA game I bought this year was Tales of Phantasia. It was alright, the story wasn't really deep enough for an RPG. While Final Fantasy may have worked this out, TOP didn't make up for it enough. As a result, once I got stuck I stopped playing and never really had the urge to pick it back up. I really would like that other GBA game with the real-time battles from the makers of Golden Sun. And, wow. i'm shocked that I didn't get any Gamecube games this year, heh.
Semjaza
I'll just do mine. 360: Viva Pinata A nice amount of great games on the system in 2006, but most of my attention has gone to Viva Pinata. Definitely something that I think should have done better than it has thus far. Pick it up. PS2: Steambot Chronicles I might have gone with Devil Summoner or FFXII, both of which are probably better to some people. I'd argue all three are probably equally good in their own ways, but I've had the most fun with Steambot Chronicles. GBA: Yggdra Union Drill Dozer is my second choice too. This is a great strategy game with wonderful graphics. It uses a card system to spice things up, but they're actually used well here... unlike most games. PC: World of Warcraft It's not new, but who cares. It's the only PC game I can bring myself to play for more than a few hours until I stop playing it entirely. PC gaming just isn't for me. I love TVs. GCN: Twilight Princess Good game, but wins largely because I don't think I bought anything else new on the system this year. Did Chibi Robo come out in 2006? That was fun. DS: Tetris DS Not the most original game, that's for sure. But it's fun and it makes up for so much time on the train for me that it would be crazy to put something else here. Ellerby
Best Nintendo DS Game - New Super Mario Bros. I'm a hardcore Mario lover and I've got to say this is probably the best Mario game to hit shelves in a long time. Nintendo did a great job of reviving such an old genre and it's replay value is incredible. Best GameCube and Wii Game - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess A very long game with a great storyline to keep you on edge the whole way. It just proves that the Zelda franchise will be around for a long time. Yeah... I haven't really been captivated by many games this year and I don't have a 360 so I can't really decide that one. OMNOMNOMALY
I will just pick my favourite game, overall, for the entire year, out of everyyy system. Okami for the PS2. Great looking, completely visually appealing, it has a very unique art style, that was a definite 10/10 off the bat. The soundtrack to the game was perfect, every scene flowed so nicely, and much of it sounded like very authentic feudal japanese music complete with Taiko drums and shamisen. I would definitely buy the soundtrack for this game. The gameplay was really easy to get the hang of, as was camera controls. The weapons were very neat and inventive, but the best thing was how interactive it was. One of the weapons you could use was painting. Seriously. it sounds nuts and like it might not work too well with gameplay mechanics, but it so did. One of the points while on your quest is to get all the brush sets, and use them as weapons, or a way to make your quest easier. You could draw bombs, trees, fill in where something once was to bring it back, paint stars in the sky, and the sun and more. I think it's an ingenious system, and I clocked many hours in one weekend and probably wasn't even close to half way through the game. All this comes together just right, and I had alot of fun playing it. I don't think it got enough coverage, personally. I had heard nothing about it until it came into my Blockbuster, which is disappointing, because this game is great. It's comparable to Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is one of my favourite RPGs ever. To sum it up: Okami = much win. You = much fail if you don't even try it.
Albert Flasher
How F.E.A.R doesn't at least get a nomination for Best PC Game is beyond me. Just unbelievable game. Great story-line, well executed in all respects, incredible graphics, it's actually hard as hell even on the moderate settings, and it's spooky! The sound-track is simple but perfecft, chilling and appropriate. It's fast-paced and very stylish, like a great action movie. The slow-mo ability is a bit abuseable but it still makes for a very fun experiance. IMO the only game that comes close is Medieval 2: Total War. There are still some fundamental bugs in the battle AI (The damn CHARGE BUG is the most annoying thing ever...) and the campaign AI is rather stupid, but with some modding here and there it makes for a great gaming experiance. Visuals are stunning and massive battles are simply epic, although if you play on the largest scale-factor you need one hell of a machine. Not the most historically accurate game ever but it's forgivable because it's so damn fun! Plus there's nothing more awesome then seeing a horde of Scottish Highlanders running down a fleeing mass of English peasents. Also of note was Prey. It may have been rediculously easy (No matter how many times you die, you just re-spawn... you can basically run into any room with fear of death and blast away at the enemies) but it was damn fun. Some of the physics concepts, and especially the portal tricks and the gravity physics, are incredibly fun and great to look at, the visuals are great. Plus I swear if you crouch at the right angle when you find that Rebel leader, you can see her goodies.

I could really get into this, but I think every thing, except the firefights, is just subpar. silpheedpilot
Hmm... Now that we're in 2007 I can safely go back and say what I think was the best titles of 2006 on all platforms I play on. Xbox 360- Plain and simple..Gears of Wa---No. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. Sure, Gears of War made many technological leaps and bounds and had many new innovations but Oblivion just had so much more to do and see. I've easily spent more than 300 hours on just one single character and still find stuff to do. I love Oblivion. Playstation Portable- Tekken: Dark Resurrection. Easy, really. Looked great, played like Tekken and was portable. So not only could I whoop you while on the go I could take Lee anywhere and whoop you too. And you and you and you over there. Gameboy Advance- Super Robot Wars: Original Generation 1 & 2. Man, was this game amazing! I saw it on store shelves a while back and thought; 'Hmmm? SRW in America? Since when?' Bought it right then and there. Enjoyed it for the few months it was out and here comes the second one. Also amazing. Tactical battles with giant mechs. Great story, neat little Fire Emblem-esque scenes. Just good. Nintendo DS- Final Fantasy 3. How could you not see this one coming? A do-over of the old school version. Class changes, awesome cliche story. Again; just good. Playstation 2- God Hand. This game is just plain ridiculous. It's hilarious, fun, challenging and has a unique visual style. The fighting is fast and furious. Did I mention that it was hard as hell?
Humaru
PS2- Guitar Hero 2: I'm a huge fan of music and having the new installment to Guitar Hero provides me and my peeps some fun and action while practicing, somewhat, at the same time. GC- Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess; Honestly can you think of a better game for GC than a Nintendo original like Link. Here a shout out: Hiyahhhh!!!!! Wii- LOZTP; for the same reason for the GC. Game of the Year: Smackdown vs Raw 2007; because nothing beats the satisfaction of beating down on Cena, Edge, and Mysterio in the same ring with my favorites of Undertaker, Rob Van Dam, Triple H, HBK, and King Booker. That just puts me in a happy mood.
Crazy Kev
I think I have some games that I'll remember from this past year. GCN: Resident Evil 4. The graphics, game play, you name it, were awsome!...Plus I'm a huge RE fan! (Why am I surprised that I'm one of the only people that chose a game other then Zelda: Twilight Princess. PS2: Guitar Hero 2 Xbox 360: Gears of War! Xbox: I have no clue? PC: Hard choice....Very hard choice. PSP: Lumines...One heck of an addicting game! DS: Who cares? PS3: I don't know many games for it. Wii: Same as above, don't know many games for it.

Dagger
Most of the games I played in 2006 weren't released in 2006. But out of the newly released games I did play, Xenosaga III wins, hands down. It's not a perfect game, and I wish to God that they'd been able to make the full six-game series, but it was still so great that I almost feel spoiled for new RPGs now. Since I loved switching up my party constantly, one aspect of it (as with Xenosaga I and II) I appreciated was how your reserve characters also gain EXP after battles, albeit not as rapidly as your active characters. While I don't know if I could pick a favorite battle system out of the three Xenosaga games (I even liked the much-reviled system featured in II), the system in III seemed to bring together the best aspects of its predecessors. The plot went in some pretty wonky directions. Even so, by the end I couldn't have been more satisfied with how they chose to wrap things up. I was sitting there in the dark at two in the morning with tears pouring down my face (and I could swear that the ending movie was, like, three hours long). Xeno III was an epic experience that had basically everything I look for in a game. ~Dagger~

I don't see how anyone can have a problem with that. Maybe you can explain more?
Personally, I think supposedly great games should be more than one great mechanic. It falters in literally every way beyond that. This game is being praised to the point of it being something on the level of, say, Half-Life 2. Is it really that great of a game or does it seem that great because no other new FPS of value came out in 2006? I mean, if that's all that matters about it, I might as well be stuck in a room with a couple of barricades and shoot to my hearts content. There's just nothing else to it. 1.) The level designs are ridiculously boring. We go from a desolate office, to a desolate apartment complex, etc. The graphics might be clear, but I don't know what it matters when nearly every place you go to looks like a box. 2.) The levels are ridiculously linear. The only chance of getting remotely lost in this game is if you get turned around because every thing around you looks the same. There's some attempt to spice this up, but it doesn't work very well. Let's say you find a locked door you cannot open. Well, just look two feet away and there (amazingly!) is a vent you can use or a ladder you can climb. The funny thing is that most of these lead almost directly to the room you were trying to get into in the first place. 3.) 85% of the story is told through answering machines you find scattered around. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't really feel like standing there waiting for the people on them to stop talking. 4.) The rest of it is told through incredibly lame interactive cutscenes, most of which involve a hallway. After you see this once or twice, it's clear what's going on storywise and absolutely nothing else in the game is remotely interesting in that aspect. 5.) 40 hours? I beat the game on the normal difficulty in about 5 to 6, tops. Hard couldn't possibly extend the game another 35 hours. I could stick the multiplayer in here and beef that up considerably, but I never really brought that up to begin with. 6.) The game is not scary or spooky. It uses up most of its ideas in the first 30 minutes, after which it repeats similar concepts until you finish it. It's story and characters are basically a mishmash of cliche Ring elements and ideas from genetic engineering B movies. 7.) There's hardly any enemy types. Sure, the firefights are fun, but when I'm fighting a handful of different beings that actually shoot back over the course of the game, it's hard to be that excited about it. I did like those guys that latch on the walls and everything, but what more can I say. 8.)
When you finally chase down that guy you've been following, hoping for some sort of final battle with something, every thing is completed with a single shot. After the rest of the title, I found this to be a huge letdown. I suppose you can say the final battle is really with Alma, but that's not exactly exciting either.
You do spend a good deal of time shooting things, but people also praise other aspects of the game. Even just the simple idea of considering this game spooky/scary gets a laugh from me. I'm not saying anyone else can not like it, but I obviously would never consider it myself. I don't understand the level of praise it gets, but some of the stuff I consider great doesn't exactly get high reviews either. It goes both ways. The funny thing about all of this is that I'd consider Condemned, a game that was largely ignored, more visceral and scary than this. They both have vaguely supernatural elements, decent fights, etc.
